While the Dragon Flag of Wales, known as Y Ddraig Goch in Welsh, is one of the more memorable of the world's flags, Wales does also have a second unofficial flag, known as the St David's Flag. In this video I explore the history of both the Red Dragon Flag and St David's Flag, going back to the time of the Romans and the Romano-Britons and Anglo-Saxons as well as the Welsh Wars of Independence with Owain Glyndŵr and beyond.

The story of the red and white dragons appears in the Mabinogion in two stories: firstly the tale of Lludd and Llyfelus, whereby one of the challenges of Lludd's rulership was the warring of two dragons who, with his brother Llyfelus' help, he intoxicates and buries in a kistvaen "in the centre of the island", then in the tale of Merlin, where Vortigern was building a castle which kept falling down, and Merlin diagnosed the problem as coming from the kistvaen at the bottom of the lake, and that if he drained the lake and opened the kistvaen, the dragons could fight to the death, the winner foretelling the victor in Vortigern's fight with the Anglo Saxons. Of course, the Mabinogion was written down by monks, as the Red Book of Hergest, the White Book of Rhydderch and the Black Book of Carmarthen, whose name borrows from Merlin's (the Welsh, Caerfyrddyn, means "Merlin's Fort", and it is supposed the magician came from there), from the oral tradition of Brythonic Kelts.

Although both stories probably derive from a much older oral tradition, the oldest surviving copies of the tale of Lludd and Llefelys are much later than the tale of the two dragons in the Historia Britonnum, and date from the 12th and 13th centuries. It forms a prequel of sorts, explaining how the dragons came to be trapped beneath Vortigern's castle in the earlier tale. The name Caerfyrddin doesn't actually relate to Myrddin / Merlin. The - fyrddin element derives from the Brythonic / Latin name for the town, Moridunum (mor meaning sea, dunum meaning fort). Therefore Caerfyrddin actually means "fort sea fort"). Over time the traditional association of the place with Merlin warped the spelling of the name to more closely resemble his own - a process called folk etymology.

@@elig6791 Nah man, the earliest surviving copies of the Mabinogion are found in the Red Book of Hergest and the White Book of Rhydderch. Both date from the second half of the fourteenth century (1350 - 1400). They were probably copied from earlier manuscripts (now lost), but the language used - Middle Welsh - would suggest the Mabinogion were compiled no earlier than the 12th century. The Historia Britonnum, where the tale of Vortigern, Merlin and the two dragons is found, is much older. It's important to note that both stories could well have been part of Wales' oral tradition for centuries before they were written down though. :)

Tudors(tudurs) were welsh. They are from down the road from me in Pen mynydd near menai bridge. Some of the tudors are buried around here. The local Tudur families still exist. About time us in North Wales had our own flag. Of course owain glyndwr went to private school and was a member of the aristocracy.
@bujin1977
@bujin1977 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonyjones9442 Indeed the Tudors were Welsh. The family was important from at least the time of Llywelyn ab Iorwerth, probably even further back than that. They were important during Glyndwr's uprising, with Rhys and Gwilym ap Tudur capturing Conwy Castle in 1401. My issue with them is from the reign of Henry Tudor onwards, as Henry effectively conned the Welsh into supporting him, but didn't exactly go out of his way to support Wales after he became King of England. I don't know. Maybe it would have been even worse for Wales had Henry Tudor lost at the Battle of Bosworth, but the Tudors effectively started the decline of Welsh culture and language that continues to this day. I disagree with North Wales having its own flag. There isn't a "North Wales". There's a northern part of Wales, but we're all one country.

@@bujin1977 I assume your in South Wales? North Wales is a very distinctive region on its own right. Even the Welsh language here is different. Our politics and culture and attitude is different. In fact when it was made a capital in the 50s we were warned it would just take from North wales, and un surprisingly it did. My mam is from cardiff but I dont think North Wales should be governed from a city more distant and more akward to get to than Glasgow! There isnt a Northern part of Wales, there is North Wales - we arent Cardiff's back garden.. Theres even been a campaign to makes sure its spelt with a capital N as it's a proper noun, not a region. In fact during lockdown there was a lit of Anger here as a lot of the policies were for urban Cardiff and swansea. Our largest town/city is inky 20k people. It's a bad fit for us.

the Acts of Union in 1536 and 1542 actually made us a country again. They reunited the Principalities and the Marches into one country, Wales. They gave us a defined border with England and separate, different legal and administrative systems. Then In 1707, the year the United Kingdom was officially created, Wales was considered a legally defined country so it was considered to be part of the United Kingdom.

One moment. Yes, the Book of Revelation has an evil red dragon who seeks to destroy all the Faithful. Whereas, Psalms 18:8 describes God as a dragon. So, dragons can be good or evil. Biblically, lions can represent Christ or the Devil. Also, doves can be holy or stupid. Donkeys can be annoyingly stubborn or they can be wise (in the story of Balaam). As for the Cross, it’s a device of cruel torture and death used by devil-worshippers (according to the Church), turned into a sign of holy sacrifice and redemption. So, is any symbol good or evil in itself?

You're probably referring to the Historia Brittonum account as mentioned in the video, in which Nennius describes the story of Vortigern fleeing from his enemies to north west Wales and trying to build a castle on a rock about a mile north east of where Beddgelert is today (now called Dinas Emrys). The castle kept collapsing, and Vortigern's advisors told him to find a fatherless child and sacrifice him and spread his blood on the ground. They found a boy in south west Wales called Myrddin Emrys (the Merlin of Arthurian legend), who told Vortigern that the reason the castle was collapsing was due to two dragons locked in combat underground beneath the castle, a red dragon symbolising the Britons and a white dragon symbolising the Anglo Saxons. He said that the red dragon would eventually defeat the white dragon.

You’ve pretty much hit the nail on the head in regards to it’s popularity of usage. Nationals and pro-indy favour the St David’s Cross, however, it doesn’t mean to say there’s animosity held against the recognised one (since there’s still a huge part of Welsh culture tied to it as opposed to the three ostrich feathers on a Welsh rugby shirt). You’re genuinely doing the country of Wales a service as the educational curriculum doesn’t teach a scrap of its history. Thank you for your passion and knowledge.

That's a later distinction really. Many older "dragon banners" like the dragon of wessex were depicted with only two legs. Iirc wyverns were originally distinguished by other small elements of design like the differences between lions, leopards, and pards. And the limb difference became popular later because the frills and beaks of the wyvern started appearing on dragons too.
