I remember watching this when it first aired and thinking the animation reminded me of Marvel Superheroes' style. Not a whole lot of action but enough camera tricks and moving mouths to give it life. Your commentary on that aspect of the series sort of backs that up. It was like the Marvel show, just given an artistic upgrade via Doug Wildey.

I was older than the average kid. I was 16 in 1975. I remember the show well. The animation was sub-par because this was during the Dark Ages of American Animation that started were Warner Brothers closed Termite Terrace, their animation studio as a cost-cutting measure. I think this was due to Hanna-Barbera's dominating the market with their cheaper animation. The Apes didn't have airplanes of their own. In fact, the airplane they had, a WWII vintage P-40 Warhawk was found by Ape Archeologists and restored to flying condition with the purpose of capturing humans with a cargo net slung under the plane. I know because this was my favorite episode.

DePatie-Freleng. Y'know? Freleng? As in Friz Freleng? One of the greatest Warner Bros. cartoon directors. The same company that produced Pink Panther. As for the executives, my good guess is that they were responding to pressure groups of the time. That's why many of the 70s' cartoons were bland and always had a moral lesson. Filmation was huge on this. Your channel must be the most professional I have ever watched. I don't know if you're scripted but I appreciate you cutting to the chase of information. Many is the time when I watch other channels and wait 3 to 5 minutes as they hem & haw and speak off the top of their heads before they get to the reason I am watching. I find most my favorite channels are somewhat polished but yours is the best...and your voice is very pleasing.

Does anyone remember the comic book seriesKamandi: The Last Boy on Earth which was a direct inspiration (or ripoff depending on your perspective) of the Planet of the Apes. The difference was that in addition to apes many other species also had their own territories and fought among themselves. The main character as a young boy was clearly meant to appeal to the comic book audience of which I was one who loved both Planet and this series in tandem.

Watched it a dozen times over, plus 2. ;) Like I said, a huge fan. I make my own custom Mego Apes based on the cartoon. Ah yes 1975. What a time that was to be a kid. With the live action TV series cancellation in 1974, this Saturday morning cartoon kept the Ape-wagon rolling along. But the 70’s was also all about kids playing outside and so as a result, I missed most of the episodes. Years later as an adult, I purchased the DVD set (Five copies to make up for my pour judgment as a ten year-old), LOL

As a 1970's kid, this was my first contact with the Apes franchise. Then I discovered the Live Action show and last the movies. I really liked the TV show better. Funny thing is that the apes had jeeps in the animated show while they only had horses in the live action. I guess animating a Jeep is cheaper than a horse, eh?

@willmfrank 3 ай бұрын
Oh yeah...A motor vehicle needs only one cel for the body and two or three for the rotating wheels; a horse can get away with one cel for the body, but needs a whole series for the head, neck and legs...and they're a lot more work than a blurry wheel.

I was 12 when this came out and I wasn’t interested in it then. Like now, I had a problem with the timeline that Charlton Heston doomed us to with blowing up the planet. They could have tried explaining that only the New York area was blown to bits and not the entire planet, allowing for more stories, just not any of the same apes or characters… but that probably was over anyone’s head. Watching the show many years later, I hated the idea of the apes using vehicles and airplanes. These were the workings of humans which the apes considered beneath them. Ape city had virtually no technology in the first movie, why would they now not only have it, but embrace it? I’m glad this cartoon only had the one season, it would have ruined the movies.

Great video!!, I got the DVD and just last week I was revisiting the series… so cool, the “animation” is very static, but I agree, I gives the series a particular look!

FYI, the DePatie - Freleng Company is the same production company that gave us the, iconic, Pink Panther Show in the late 60's/early 70's.

I've never seen this cartoon. But I still want a sequel to the Tim Burton Apes movie. I want to know what happened after the Ape Lincoln memorial scene!

I don't see how they would make a sequel to Tim Burton Apes movie at this point while I enjoyed the remake but I love the reboot movies more, since they already have been doing with Andy Serkis as Caesar and now the 4th one about his descendant along with a girl human he helps and set 300 years later which I can't wait. I mean yes I would've liked know what happened next in Tim Burton's Apes universe. I'm actually binging all the Planet of the Apes movies both the classics and the reboots plus the remake to get ready for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. 😊

2:58 - Hey, when you talk about Jonny Quest - could you bring up Peggy Charren and her organization that neutered action cartoons for years to come? Lots of younger folk don't seem to be much aware of her reign of terror.

(For some material on that, look up "Almanac Extra: Children's Television (1987) Part 1" and "Almanac Extra: Children's Television (1987) Part 2" at Internet Archive. Sound isn't all that great, but hoo boy... showcases some of the damage she did as well as how dishonest her supporters were)
