Something that I learned as a beginner: Algae are not bad, neither are they the end of the world. Algae grow due to an imbalance in the tank, if you've got a planted tank, just wait it out, it'll balance itself out one day (might take a month or 2). Cyanobacteria are bad. But they are there, nothing you can really do about them except keep them at bay, clean your plants to promote plant growth and one-day cyanobacteria will go down in numbers. Also, don't clean the sides of the glass too much if you aren't looking through them often, the algae growing on that is a great food source for snails and smaller fish that nibble some algae. 2 1/2 months into my current planted tank and all my plants are thriving now, cyanobacteria outbreak was super annoying but we did fine, and only small amounts of algae are actually growing, which the snails love to feast on.

You are 100% correct. For years I chased numbers using RO water and trying to remineralize it was a roller coaster of pH KH and GH. My plants always struggled and I would have fish died for no reason. I did like you switch to my tap water, isn't ideal but consistent and everything is thriving👍

I mostly do saltwater and totally agree that consistency is way better than chasing ideal chemical balances. Learned early on that corals hate sudden chemical changes so a good stable balance is always better than one that is alternating good to perfect.

Some few aquariums run for months with perfect water without any change. Right now I have trouble as each time I change water I kill some shrimps. I should do it more often and with less than water than I do, but one day I will have my drip system finalized.

As someone who’s been in the hobby for a while, these are my tips for beginners: - Get water from an already established tanks. Cycling clean water in a new filter won’t do much. - Do reach for each fish you want. - Listen to the research! Don’t try to bend rules. Those fish CAN’T be together. You NEED that food for those type of fish. Yes you do have an over crowded tank. Yes you do have to get them in schools. That tank is too small. “They be iight.” NO THEY WONT! Lol - Prepare for investing time. Schedule yourself to clean maintain. You want these fish to feel as home in a closed environment. - Don’t give up. You’re learning even through mistakes. Algae will spike. Fish will die...a lot of fish will die. The hobby takes time and patience.

Best beginner pro tip Im throwing on the table (from my experiences): when dealing with sick or injured fish, don't overload them with chemicals and treatments, yes its good to have on hand medications etc but for all the fish I've rescued, just keeping your good water quality and regular water changes does AMAZING wonders for fish all by its self :-D I test my water once in a blue moon type deal, dont worry too much about parameters as long as I can see happy and healthy fish and water change regularly (sometimes twice a week tank depending). The point of this hobby is to enjoy your fish, so do that, dont be lazy or complacent but take a seat and don't be manic about those numbers :-D

When it comes to water parameters and cichlids, the thing to keep in mind is that they are extremely hardy fish so they can tolerate living in water that not fine tuned to their natural habitat. In fact the African Rift Lakes connect to the ocean so there's always a constant change in the water parameters and that's what makes the cichlids so hardy.

White cloud minnows have that exact same 'up close' thing about them and are so easy to keep. From a distance it's just this tiny little fish, at just 1.5 inch, darting around, but when you get close up you see all of their different colours in their body and especially their fins. When they mature it looks like someone has attacked them with acrylic paint. They have about 5 different colours in their fins alone, each one a vibrant intense colour. I'd love to see one of your tanks have a colony of them in the future. I myself have one tank the same size as your gallery tanks and would love to throw about 40 of them in there.

I think Joey might have confused fresh with salt water fish in their growth habits. Most freshwater fish will grow much larger than an average wild fish because if you take proper care of them captive fish can live much longer than wild fish. Captive freshwater fish also tend to grow faster as well. Captive Saltwater fish don’t tend to get as big as wild fish generally.
