In April 1912, 14 people from the parish of Addergoole in County Mayo, Ireland, set sail for America aboard the RMS Titanic, seeking better lives. The villagers of Addergoole held "American wakes" for the emigrants, symbolic ceremonies marking the departure and likely permanent separation from their families. When the Titanic struck an iceberg, the Addergoole 14 were initially told to stay calm and remain in steerage, but eventually faced chaos and difficulty accessing lifeboats due to class barriers. The group was notably organized; however, 11 of the 14 passengers from Addergoole did not survive.

One of my family members left from Ireland on the Titanic as a teenager. She was with 2 of her friends and were very poor. They didn’t make it. But I mention her when I can, so never forgotten. Rip Katherine Hargadon

My Irish Grandmother emigrated 2 years before the Titanic sailed. She traveled 3rd class-all by herself but she had the name and address of her maternal uncle (a requirement for most women traveling alone). She lived to 103 years old and never returned to Ireland.

My great grandmother sailed alone on Luisiana 6 months before Titanic. She was 17 and carried the name and address of of a sister who had come the year before and was working as a domestic. I remember her a little (she lived to be 95). She was the baby of several sisters who scattered from Australia to London to Chicago. The money they sent home kept her in school. She was proud of 3 things 1) she had never worked as domestic 2) she raised a son for the priesthood and another who became financially and socially successful.

Fascinating video telling the back stories of some of the passengers. It’s the first such video I’ve seen. These stories needed to be told. It was very interesting to hear their descendants talk about their lives after being rescued. Most of them didn’t ever want to talk about the Titanic. Many of their descendants got to know the survivors. I’m astonished at the way they were able to put the tragedy behind them and make a life for themselves in America. The remembrance ceremony by the people of Addergoole especially the ringing of the bell brought tears to my eyes.

So sad, I have been researching Titanic for the last 35 years of my life and while I've yearned to learn more about the ship, you tend to lose sight of the people whose lives were affected by this tragedy. It wasn't until I saw a demonstration of 1500 people who had gathered in a city square to show just what 1500 people looked like gathered together that I realized just what the loss was like. Then you have to think about how many families were affected, entire families wiped out, so many people from so many different towns and countries who were never seen again because they drowned in the North Atlantic that fateful night of April 14th-15th, 1912. I have said it time and time again, but God bless the victims of and the families affected by the sinking of Titanic.

I'm from Belfast. I think I always knew Titanic was built at Harland& Wolff shipyard, but I remember at primary school in east Belfast looking out the school window at Kerrsland Crescent and looking at the houses where Titanic deceased had lived while I read the names and addresses of local victims left by a teacher who had an interest. I think it's great to remember, I don't know what I think of the Titanic tourist attraction. It may be the most iconic shipwreck, but there have been so many others also with such great loss of life. May the universe walk with all of us however we travel, and particularly at sea.

My mom was brought up in Connemara, born in early 1930s. Moved to Dublin for work, then to London with my Dad. But went home in her 60s. She bought enough land from my uncle for a nice house and garden. Mom and Dad talked often about aunts and uncles who left for America, and then it was really like they died, just a few letters afterwards. I recognise the tales of poverty as well, it is why my mom went to Dublin, and then both of them to London.I My sister was born in England and moved to Ireland with her husband, and has had a good life. Ireland is such a good prosperous place now. As a country the Irish have suffered so much, losing so many of their best peop!e to emigration. I am so de!ighted that now most young Irish can stay at home and find good jobs. I am proud to have been born there, even though my home is not there, part of my heart a!says will be.

I’m Canadian and I feel your pain. At one point in my life when I was just starting out my Mom’s sister (also a Canadian) was married and living in the United States. I thought hard about it and I am so thankful that I stayed in my home country despite all the enticements that the US hospitals were dangling in front of us Canadian university nursing graduates. I ended up getting very ill with an autoimmune illness in my mid forties and the medication I required was thousands of dollars per month. That illness was just one illness. I was unable to work. I had so wanted to return to work however, I know that will never happen and now I am 65. If I was in the United States I don’t know what would have happened to me. I shudder to think and the devision in the country and the fact that there is even a possibility that a known convicted felon can run and win the office of the presidency is mind blowing. We get CNN and FOX and all of the US network news here in Canada. I feel for the people who are as stunned as I am at this outcome, that one of the major parties continues to support a mysoginistic bigot and felon. I recall a time where everyone respected whoever became president despite what party they belonged to because candidates were sensible and you may not agree with their politics and policies but in four years you have a chance to voice your opinion on their job performance. Within the coming year ( hopefully not this fall) we will be giving a performance appraisal on our Prime Minister and well, we have Liberals (Trudeau) red, Conservatives Not impressed with their candidate choice blue and the New Democrats ( Singh) and orange is their colour. (So we are in a predicament but nobody is a convicted felon).. it’s frightening to think what may happen in the United States.

Titanic was not the fastest ship at the time. That record was held by Cunard’s Mauretania from1909 to 1929. White Star decided that rather than offering passengers the fastest passage, they’d offer them the most luxurious and largest vessels. Mauretania was about 31,000 tons and Titanic, 46,000.

God will not be mocked. Titanic was the only ship to not be christened and the white star lined even mocked God by saying that he couldn’t even sink it. God showed up unfortunately and the ship sank. It’s unfortunate so many souls had to die. And who are these men in the video talking about superstition? The Irish had it right receiving prophesies and warnings from the Lord. How dare they disrespect religion in this video especially when it turned out to be correct. RIP to these lovely ladies and gentlemen. Why 14? 3 made it and went on to have families. Or is it because they have all now passed?

The Titanic luxury was a facade because it was buildt on sub standard wood, and steel leaving it vulnerable to the ocean and it's icebergs! So awful and so tragic! 😢

Why do ppl always have to bring religion into everything? Have your own beliefs but stop projecting that onto everyone and everything else. It wasn’t a deity that made this ship sink. It was a series of errors made by men. Period.

Stop. Why do ppl always bring religious crap into everything? All religions are made up stories to get ppl to do certain things and to provide comfort about death. Pure fiction. Period. The ship sank because it had design flaws, men made mistakes and it hit an iceberg. No deity was involved.

Lifeboats were for first and second class. Third class did not pay enough for lifeboats use.

It was more complicated than that. The ship had more life boats than required. And so many men gave up their lives so women and children could survive, including wealthy men for third class women and children. And life on board the third class on Titanic was splendid until it sank. Comfortable cabins with running water, central heating and electric lighting. A breakfast of porridge, eggs and ham, kippers, and bread and marmalade. Dinner of soup, roast meat and vegetables, and pudding followed by fruit. Tea time meal of cold meats, cheese, bread and butter, and a second pudding. If only it didn't sink.

No they removed a lot of life boats in design phase cuz it took up too much space! What a shame!
