A minor set back for a major comeback! Hey rich are you going to the honey bee expo this year?

Nope

On the dead bees were their tounges sticking out? I believe that is a sign of poisoning.

I’ll take a look

Drone laying Queen ( If no Queen) you have laying workers. The dead bees are dying of old age and are carried out by the workers. Combine this hive with a strong hive

I would not combine this hive regardless, I might add a frame of eggs and brood from another hive. Remains to be seen.

@@southflbeekeepingwithrich if it was a worker laying hive, you would have to add an egg/ young brood frame for a few weeks.

@@southflbeekeepingwithrich The Practical Queen Breeder: Beekeeping Naturally, by Michael Bush, “The only other really practical method, in my opinion, is to add a frame of open brood every week until they rear a queen. Usually by the second or third frame of open brood they will start queen cells. This is simple enough when the hive is in your backyard. “

I did not mean that as a counter for laying workers, but rather as a way for them to make another queen if this queen was dead.

Yes, Michael Bush is my primary source for management info as well, but so is watching what happens when I don't do an intervention. I want to see whether they make it on their own first.

Well that wasn’t to good ! I’m in st. Augustine (7) year beekeeper, have had beetles and wax moths problems in the past, NOT this year, grub X ? Banana’s 🤷♂. Used Apivar strips in 4 hives and powdered sugar in 4 , NO difference (so far). Have done that for years. Thanks for the great info.

I want to hear more about powdered sugar and apivar giving you equal results. I am willing to do powdered sugar and the recent research out of Puerto Rico on grooming times makes this look more like a viable option.
