I was nodding along with all of this. I’ll always remember how exciting the launch of the Naked palette was. And I love some of the recent launches (like the mascara) but it’s definitely not as exciting when a new product launches as it used to be. If anything I’m more excited by ONE amazing eyeshadow and put off by a huge palette. Maybe we are all just more minimal now! x

I feel like in my teens I just cared about the amount of sparkle and how long the bottom eye liner would last. Now I feel like I care about what the products are doing for my skin, how they’re made (cruelty free?), what’re they’re made of (vegan?) and how they’re addressing issues with sustainability in terms of packaging or the ability to refill them. I hope some of those staple brands we all used to love can make the transition along with us consumers who want more than just a pretty look.

When you asked about a brand you've fallen out of love with, I feel like that really opened up a whole can of worms and I have so many thoughts lol I feel like I've lost that glimmer of excitement for Glossier :( I used to be so excited for their launches but I think the last product I genuinely repurchased and reused from them was boy brow (which is my holy grail brow product) and their pro tip (which I found out is nearly identical to the much more affordable lilybyred am9 to pm9 liquid liner. I tried to do some research as to where pro tip is manufactured because lilybyred, despite being a Korean brand, manufactures their liquid liner in Japan. Ingredients are also very similar - but also it's liquid liner - how creative can you get?). Their new launches haven't really spoken to me and I can't tell if it's because I'm no longer in their target demographic of fresh-faced tweens, or if I'm just really into k-beauty right now. The peak "excitement" around the beauty community and new releases (at least for me) was during this new wave of beauty (ie. Glossier, Kosas, etc.) that was focused on community, fresh faces, and learning to love the skin you're born in. We've almost developed this expectation that brands should have a persona that you can develop a parasocial relationship with, rather than acknowledging that they're very complicated organisms built of competing interests and visions. Beauty has one of the strongest customer loyalty bases out of any industry because it is so personal, and it is so easy to develop an almost-friendship with a brand, and social media has almost made it easier. However, I don't think that the industry has become oversaturated, but rather than thousands of brands are trying to utilize the same strategy of rapid-release-limited-edition-but-not-really that have worked for them historically because there's always going to be a new generation of 13-to-20-year-olds who want to be a part of the beauty community (and celebrity/influencer endorsements). If you look at ohii beauty (launched by UO), it was a direct response to Glossier and trying to strike the fresh-skin beauty game while the iron was still hot. The beauty industry has very, very high-profit margins because of minimal R&D, white labeling, and cheap ingredients like child labor mica. What's very frustrating to me as a consumer is that brands don't necessarily reinvest that money into R&D, but into marketing instead. It's almost kind of like Apple - and how they release the same chassis with an extra lens, and call it a "new" phone. If you are looking for beauty brands that really light your fire and bring that bit of excitement back, I would recommend exploring K-Beauty! It's definitely a different kind of look to North American makeup, but the products are so well made that it's hard not to love them. My fave k-beauty brands/products (I love a fresh-faced look, but also like to pretend that I'm a kpop idol in my spare time) - Chanel les beige cushion foundation (sorry this shit is literally only available in europe/asia because north america couldn't hop on the cushion foundation train but it is literally THE best cushion foundation i've ever used in my entire gd life not even being dramatic ok) - Missha glow ampoule concealer (under eyes who? don't know her. packaging is eh, product is liquid gold) - Rom&nd glassing water gloss #00 meteor track (this is what glossier lip gloss wanted to be) - Jung Saem Mool essential skin nuder cushion (a more accessible, more affordable version of chanel's cushion foundation) - 3CE stylenanda multi eye color palette (it's like the naked palettes branded and formulated for gen-z) - Rom&nd zero velvet tint (matte lip tint that's just chefs kiss. everything lip products from rom&nd kick ass) - heimish dailism mascara (a film form mascara that adds volume and length i have shit tier lashes and they make me look amazing - i'm sure it'll be even more amazing on you!!)\ Thank you for coming to my ted talk!

So I used to be an Urban Decay artist and when I tell you I LOVED the brand it doesn't come close. It felt like they were totally ahead of the curve on everything, coming out with new colours and formulas that no other brand could compare to. The clients were drawn to the glitter and sparkle, and we definitely had a specific customer base, which at the time was completely cherished. I would regularly see clients whose entire makeup collection was UD, who would be in store at 9am on launch days, front row at launch events - total groupies! Personally, I think they've tried to diversify their offering so much they've lost the heart of what made them UD, but without putting enough risk in to fully capture any customer base. You wouldn't find your hardcore Chanel customer swaying towards Urban, and a total colour lover can easily find more reasonable alternatives from other brands. I will always love Urban Decay, but as I've grown up I've not been tempted by much other than their setting sprays and primers. Personally, I feel like the Naked palettes are tired and overdone now, and I'm glad they're moving into some braver colour stories in their launches again, but it's not quite tempting me back to them yet. Also, apologies, if I'm repeating anything said in the video - I paused to type this out because I have a lot of thoughts on this! I'll always love Urban Decay, but for me, it's rooted in nostalgia.
@nicoler57133 жыл бұрын
This! This is my problem with where UD went. They went... bland. Naked 1? Amazing, I still own, a game changer. Naked 2? Okay, not my taste but I can see why it's a good release. Naked 3? I love pinky tones but... do we need this? Do we really need a Naked palette for every single undertone they can dream up? That's how I started feeling as Naked became their centrepiece line. And like, different undertone palettes are great. Palettes targeted to different skintones are great (and necessary) but Naked just dominated so much of their releases (and I can't blame UD for that, they sold like hotcakes!) and it faded into the rest of the brand. Like they realised the money that came from appealing to the mainstream as opposed to their original client base and combined with the explosion of cosmetics as an industry, it caused them to lose a lot of standing as a brand. I could throw a rock blindfolded in any cosmetics shop and hit five Naked dupes nowadays and the quality, even at the lowest price points is generally workable enough that, unless you really want the palette for the packaging and name, why would the average person shell out what is now £45 if they can pay like £13 or less? And then there were quality drops throughout the brand's products. I can't remember the specific shade names, but they had this amazing gold pencil eyeliner that they replaced... with a worse gold eyeliner. And then I think they replaced that worse gold eyeliner with a third, even WORSE gold eyeliner. And their colourful identity? Like you said, a customer who wants that has options there, too. Maybe not as many that you can just go to a store and pick up (you know, in the before times), but in the internet age, that ceases to be a problem. Trying to straddle all consumer bases rarely, if ever, works, and while UD got away with it for a while due to the massive popularity of anything with the word Naked in it, everyone caught up and overtook them while they were still going "hey, guys, we have a neutral palette with some muted pops of colour! They're named after s/x things and dr*gs!" (censoring just because I'm never sure what YT likes and doesn't) and it's just... boring. Also I'm just really tired of all the ~edgy~ names, not just from UD but all makeup brands. It feels prudish to say, but do we really need to call a shade Kinky? Or anything along those lines? Some of us would like to talk makeup with our parents. Or around younger people.

I also think it's that beauty standards are changing. It used to be all about the blocked Instagram brows, full coverage foundation, and a super heavy face. Now fluffy/natural brows, light/no coverage foundation, glowy, natural skin, and clean beauty is popular. A lot of the mid-level brands (UD, Too Faced, KVD, MAC, ABH, etc.) just haven't kept up with the times and they all feel a bit dated now. I like that, for the most part, Benefit pivoted to focus on brows because people will always want brow products and they can change it up based on brow trends.

I remember I was 15 when I fell in love with the moondust eyeshadows by ud, at that time I lived in a small Italian village that had no sephora around and i didn't work so I didn't have money but my very first online purchases (it was my first expensive as well, I can still feel how bad it hurt to ask my parents for money for a thing they thought was so stupid lol) was on urban decay website (I had no clue there were other websites selling make up out of the brands' ones). I bought the moondust eyeshadow in solstice. Oh boy, when it came I was the happiest girl ever, I used to wear that I eyeshadow every single day without mascara, no liner, nothing just duochrome eyeshadow all over the lid. I still have it and I truly keep it there just for sentiment value cause there are way better duochrome formulas nowadays but it will forever be with me. I can’t tell you how happy I am that there’s now a video every weekday! Also urban decay naked palette always had me in awe- I didn’t start dabbling into make up until I was in college, even then, midway through - but it was just always * that * product that was the an ‘omg you have it?!’ When getting ready with the other girls. I was always afraid to dive in - but they came out with the naked basics and I used that every single day- I still have it and it’s one of those things I’m going to cry when I have to actually toss. But I’ve never gotten anything else other than the all-nighter spray from urban decay since tbh. Another brand that’s like this to me is tarte. I LOVED them- at one point i had a full face of tarte and was so happy that they had a foundation that actually matched me. But I think since then, and add on KZbin I was able to learn about others and just more able make up in general that they fell in comparison when I started trying other recommendations and just became forgotten and none of their newer launches really excited

Maybe it's too difficult for a brand to pitch to investors to tailor their products to the growing up of a generation. That being said, UD and TooFaced have definitely aimed their products at younger and younger consumers over the years... Which confuses me deeply 🤷♀️

There are constantly younger people in their teens and early 20s who are just discovering makeup. Most of the time it's the consumer moving on to other brands rather than the brands rebranding to fit their OG consumer's changing tastes. However that being said I think UD changed heaps from the edgy brand they started out with to the neutral gal's go-to that they are now so you could say they actually did grow up with their consumer.

Agree!!! Even if a product is great I am so much more drawn to brands with a more "adult" branding and packaging. I’m definitely more into natural dewy makeup now than I was in my teens/early 20s. But I do have to say, that as a woman of deeper complexion, I’m pretty excited to see brands coming out with base, cheek, and color products that pack a bigger punch because it means that the market is widening for users like me. I really loved the tones in the naked 3 palette, but to be honest most colors were really chalky. Hoping urban decay comes out with newer naked palettes that are more inclusive, that’s where I see the market going and where the most successful brands are already living like fenty and rare beauty.

You hit the nail on the head. I've reached mid 30s and I no longer want big morphe palettes or mac limited editions. What I want is little quads or quint palettes from dior and VB Beauty, I want a few lip products I can rely on and am more interested in skincare than foundation. My tastes have changed so much that I've had to completely overhaul my makeup collection! UD was one of my favourite brands but I honestly can't remember the last thing I got from them.

Allana!! This look is fantastic! The market is defiantly oversaturated. I have lots of thoughts on this that are not easily articulated through text. Enjoyed this video! xx

The hydromaniac is my #1 fave right now...coming from crusty dry Denver!! It's very long lasting, all day hydrated & gorg!
@hannahbrown59953 жыл бұрын
I think it's a combination of things Alana said, as well as loads of other brands doing similar things at lower prices, oversaturation of bright shadow looks on social media, the original fans of UD moving towards a more natural/fresh look because it focuses on skincare. Makeup technology has advanced so much that it takes a lot for people to be wowed by higher priced brands, especially eyeshadows.

As a 29 yr old - I still own the first Naked Palette from high school purely for nostalgic reasons. I kept those heavy metal liners for so many years even when they were unusable! 😂 ..I have a feeling those glitter liquid liners will make a comeback and I am here for it
@Laura-mv1eb3 жыл бұрын
I still love and use UD's 24/7 eyeliners, all nighter spray and the heavy metal liners, but I agree they haven't had a new launch I've been excited for in a long time. This definitely peaked my interest- the palette and the tints seem interesting. When it comes to brands that have gone downhill or let me down over time I would definitely say Benefit! I can't think of any of their products that I still use and like.

It's so funny, because I feel just the opposite of you when it comes to color. haha When I was younger I hardly used makeup at all. The older I get the more colorful the makeup looks! I think it's partially being comfortable with who I am and the makeup choices I make, but who really knows. Sending love and warm weather vibes!

I feel like Urban Decay needs to reduce down to a smaller palette. It grows old before its time b/c you may not use several of the colors.

The blue shirt is everything! I need it in my life!!💙🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩. I love the eyeshadow combo on your eyes I think it looks lovely without any loud tones. UD was never one of my go to brands, I’m a bit more chill if you will. But I’ll be exploring those Cheek to lips product that’s for sure!!🤩. Can’t wait till tom video!!!!

I do agree with your point on our tastes/preferences changing at some point in our lives whatever your age. I didn’t wear any makeup when I was in my twenties... maybe mascara and some lipstick. In my my thirties I added eyeshadow and all colours. (This is sounding like some some 🤣🤣). Now I’m adding a light tint to my skin. I’m finding it hard to find one I like. I would love to hear an update of your thoughts on the base products. Is it sheer to light? Longevity etc. Thank you. 🥰🥰

I remember when I started to really get into makeup and all I wanted was the UD naked 3 palette hahah I was never into colourful makeup but I feel like I would still get excited with some of their new launches, nowadays I don't think any of their products really intrigue me... and I feel the same way about everything you said in the video. PS I think you really thoroughly and eloquently explained your (our) feelings in this video, really impressed with your multitasking

You are one of the few that I trust with recommendations. I started watching my beauty bloggers (you, fleur, TiffanyD, Amelia, talk Becky talk and others) back in 2009 and I am pretty sure you are one of them in my rotation. I took a hiatus of watching for a few years. I am back and on a huge beauty kick. So, reason I posted all of that is... are you dry, normal, oily or combo skin? Thanks!

Bought my first ever eyeshadow palette back in 2014 (first naked palette) and I loved it and still own it! Haven't really bought much from them since, but I want to because everything they come out with is so cute

The first thing I ever bought at Sephora was the original Naked palette. I used it daily, pretty sure my first date with my now husband I was wearing that eyeshadow. But I think I fell out of love with most brands who were churning out tons of releases, mostly because they were also brands who discontinued products. And while I like to try new things, I also don’t love the constant reformulating or repackaging or discontinuing, because sometimes I just want to go in and purchase what I like. Same with Charlotte Tilbury, I used to be so excited to try her stuff, but now there’s just too much stuff to wade through to find what I like.

This video makes me want to try the palette! I think one brand that has let me down recent is Nudestix. I ADORE every product I’ve ever tried from them but I feel like a lot of the colours have been similar and the skincare line just isn’t it for me. I’d love to see them explore earth tones more with their eyeshadow sticks. The closest they’ve really gotten was the collab with Hilary Duff and it was so fun!

Those lip and skin tints from Urban Decay are my fave moderately priced makeup find that I bought in the last year. Kinky is legit my favorite color to warm up my face with!

I think I am going to consider trying the UD glowy tinted foundation of really looks amazing on you 👌🏻 thanks for this video 💪🏻 I am in love with my Naked Loaded Palette 🎨

The UD products you used today look gorgeous....that base is flawless! So in regards to this convo, I think it's kind of both like you said (us ladies that love our classic neutrals & don't need the loud packaging), but also the direction of some of these brands are a bit confusing. It's like they're trying to cater to a younger audience, but they're missing that balance. Also it seems like they're trying to be too innovative....for example the Becca zero pigment foundation. I get that they are trying to stay fresh, but getting rid of some of their staples, is a let down. There needs to be a balance & listening to all of their audience is the best place to start. Come out with great new products, we don't need a new launch EVERY SINGLE DAY! 🤦♀️Ya know?!? Thanks Lan, you look gorgeous girl! 🤗💕

This look turned out so beautiful!! I also used to work at a MAC counter and I feel like their launches haven’t excited me in a long time. Like wut was that Sims collection about!? I feel like MAC is trying too hard to stay trendy when I just wish they would stick to being a professional MUA go-to. I want to see new complexion products from them and more elevated launches bc I love them 😩

I think you put it well that it’s more about personal style changing. I think brands should obviously grow with the times but keep their core “aesthetic”. Though my style is very different from yours, I’m a colorful, matte gal myself of 32, I think some brands should continue with what they’re known for. I know if I want something colorful and bold I’ll reach for Sugarpill or JSC. I actually feel like there’s a brand for everyone, I don’t think I need something to excite me, I just trust the brands I love to continue doing what they’re doing. Maybe formulas and claims are more what I’m intrigued by, how long something will last, etc. I love trying new mascaras and liners, but at the end of the day it’s still going to have to meet the desired result. I know I’m ranting and I’m not sure there’s a point 😂 I think I just wanted to share my 2¢ lol

UD’s 24/7 gel liners are some of my favorites! They glide on even more smoothly than the Marc Jacobs gel liners!! Besides the OG Naked palette, I’m not that big of a fan of any other products, but I am reconsidering that tinted moisturizer!

I went the opposite way! when I was a teen (I'm 30 now) I was too afraid of bold makeup, now I dived into colour and I adore it. I started using concealer and blush and...stopped the highlight. I let the blush do the work.

I couldn't agree more! There was a period of time when all the colourful Colourpop launches caught my eye and I wanted all of them and I got a great number of palettes, as well as a lot of unnecessary stuff. Have I used all of that? No, I haven't. After that period of time I stopped getting excited by the majority of makeup and then Covid hit and I had to stop wearing makeup everyday. Now I only wear eyebrows, mascara and somedays liner. I think the issue here has been a mix of getting older and looking for practical products (I cannot be bothered to spend more time applying makeup honestly) and brands sticking to a unique type of consumerism (generally speaking) and not including options for all tastes.... That's just my opinion!

UD was my first experience with “high end” products and the epitome of my makeup obsession. Through the years I’ve definitely streamlined my look from buying every new palette to having go to products I use everyday. In the past year or so dare I say I don’t even buy eyeshadow anymore?! I’m living for supple healthy skin that’s enhanced with some foundation/bronzer, great brows, and long fluttery lashes. I’d rather spend my money on skincare to keep my skin healthy and glowing and accentuate that with light makeup! Here for the more natural look!

I’m glad you used this palette! I just got mine and can’t wait to play. I like the color story and had two horses so I had to get this one! :) My tastes have changed but I’ve never really written a brand off, just choose products now that interest me or catch my eye. Great look!
