What Happened to Wale?

Go through Wale’s albums in sequential order. Do people dislike Wale because of their own 'Attention Deficit'? It couldn’t be his lack of 'Ambition or The Gifted' lyricism he expresses. Do people want more substance from 'The Album About Nothing', or is there a dark cloud that prevents Wale’s 'Shine'? Even Wale himself has publicly acknowledged a general lack of respect for his body of work and a feeling that he deserves a stronger media response to his output. So, if there is a pervasive amount of hate surrounding this Nigerian spitter born and raised in Washington DC, then doesn't anybody like Wale?

I LOVE Wale as an artist and he's one of my faves hands down, but I gotta be objective: 1. Being good at your job is NOT enough, you gotta be likable, approachable, and play well with others. We see this with Cardi B. Psychology proves that we tend to be more favorable towards people we like. Likability may not be able to carry you, but lackthereof can definitely destroy you. 1a. This is the biggest thing: Wale does not know how to relate to people and he is COMPLETELY unaware of the power and influence of perception. 2. He can come across as "all things to all people." Artists should definitely be versatile but you cant be everything to everyone, ESPECIALLY NOT all at once. J. Cole is the older brother who went to college and tries to steer the kids the right way. Drake is the romantic guy with an edge turned R&B rapper. Kendrick is the concious revolutionary. Big Sean is the guy who isn't a "thug" but still knows the streets. The type of guy you'd find interesting enough to date but def. not threatening enough to avoid. Wale is....??? That's the problem. He hasn't developed an identifiable core fanbase nor has he branded/marketed himself as something that the masses can identify with. This is why we see that people will fuck with a few of his songs but not necessarily him. 3. Wale killed his reputation and image on social media and reputation is EVERYTHING. Rappers are known for being fun loving or at least knowledge dropping people. Wale is known for being emotionally unstable and highly sensitive to even the slightest critique. Just like a bully's victim, when you're easily provoked and a reactor, you make yourself an easier target. Rather than logging off and not responding Wale took the bait. 4. Wale is not personable enough with mainstream public. Even tho DJ Khaled had been making music since I was a kid in the 90s/2000s, he recently catapulted to mainstream success by being so open and interesting on SnapChat. With Wale you don't get more past the music and the basic biographical info. 5. Wale proclaiming himself "a poet" gives the impression that he is dubbing himself as smart. OTHER PEOPLE compliment you and give you monikers. If you crown yourself something then the public MUST perceive you as being the best at it. Otherwise you just look like you cant back your shit up.

He's too far ahead especially when he dropped his first album. He's not only an awesome artist he's a unique one. Combine that with his poor public persona and legitimate concern about the quality of the projects he puts out you have an enormous mess in today's atmosphere. I just hope he stays the course and never compromises his style, flow, production, ect. Because there are several artists out now that sound alike, but none in the "popular realm" sound like Wale. Also Free Lunch was fantastic!

Rap is bullshit now. There needs to be more of a variety and talent should come before the money. Wale should be allowed to be himself and not what they want him to be. People have to understand that there have always been different types of rappers and everyone has their own preference. I agree with this. I'm from Washington, DC. Wale is not. He went to lived/went to school in Montgomery County, MD. (A suburb of DC) When most people hear Maryland they automatically associate it with Baltimore. NOT DC. I am also a rap artist from the area as well. I used to look up to Wale and to say that any of my experiences with him we're pleasant would be a bold face lie. A lot of ya'll buy into the fact that he's good with words that this man can do no wrong because he's a poet but just because you're good with words doesn't mean you are a nice person...He could've taken so many artist under his wing from this area to be bigger but due to the fact that he cannot get over himself and his ego he continues to swim in a pool of mediocrity when he should be a top tier artist along side of Cole, Kendrick & Drake. But it's Wale who's in his own way. He only thinks of himself and is afraid of someone from his hometown being bigger than he is so he hides around hard individuals to make himself appear as a person that is more fearful than he actually is....Wale is a crybaby who should be bigger than what he is but he is not because of his ego. Period. - Sincerely someone from DC.

Wale checks all the boxes ppl claim they care about from HipHop. He’s got more hits than all the rappers who hate on him. Never compromised integrity. And has started various waves that rappers bit off in sneakers, style and musical approach. Wale just from DC. It’s a hard state of mind to understand, if you’ve never been around it. And Wale is heavy go-go influenced, which makes the way he delivers his rhymes extremely different. Either you like it or you don’t. People that are polarizing like this will always have a strong love’em or hate’em vibe around them.

All Wale had to do was stick to his core fan base, which are poets and thinkers. As SOON as he signed w/ Maybach, he tried to rap w/ the trends and not w/ the poetic verses, similes, metaphors, the cadence of how he used to do things. Each and every mixtape was FIRE before his Maybach days. The mixtape after was trash to me to. He put popular rappers on his mixtapes, but he knows that who he chose does not mesh well with his style of rap. He shouldn’t have signed w/ Maybach, because that whole label is trendy, although I do give credit to Meek’s latest work. Wale is NOT A TREND rapper. He is poetic. And for y’all to say his style is played out, but rides w/ Migos or lil pump (don’t get me wrong I like that type of music too) and welcomes that style of rap easily, shows a lot about how “eclectic” y’all claim y’all music/rap diet is. People just hate and throw salt when it’s not their cup of tea, and people bandwagon. Shits lame. Hell, I can’t stand the way big Sean raps/flow, or any of his music, but I’m not starting a bandwagon hate train because I don’t like it.. EDIT: Bet if he signs to Dreamville, he’d flourish, shit or even go independent! But get off Maybach... That’s not a match made...

Well promoting pure Blackness is one reason. Wale is sensual. Wale is dope. Wale is one of the Goats. Wale is cool. Wale is his own man. Wale is a lyrical genius. Wale’s videos are fun to watch. I’ve been a fan since Lotus Flower Bomb or the Breakup Song. Wale keep going. I don’t buy his music (or anyone’s) I do stream it though (kinda the same I know). I like and comment and you will find his music in my playlist on my KZbin channel AND a compilation of him dancing on my channel! He must be made the norm!

The best thing for Wale to do is to COMPLETELY rebrand himself. Find a new style that works with his strengths. Obviously keep the Spoken Word elements, Tracks like Bad is what women like the most about Wale. He's good rapper, so I lyrically and even substantively I don't see any issues. The GoGo sound I think he can keep but update it and if he can bring some Nigerian sounds in and find a nice mix of Nigerian and DC GoGo sound I think he can find a nice authentic sound to rebrand himself. But ultimately it sounds like his problems has less to do with his music and more to do with his social skills. He should leave the bridges he's burnt burnt. Mend and strengthen the bridges he has left and find new relationships with people he has yet to meet or work with. When possible have adult conversations with burnt bridges and admit faults justified or not and let his actions reconnect those bridges. Begging will make people lose respect but people are receptive to reformed people.

I'm from DC and Wale gets love out here. But i think the reason people hate on him is because he acts bitter. Instead of feeling happy about his position and opportunity, he complains a lot about his lack of recognition. If i were in his corner I'd say, "Wale, just put out good music and let the music speak for itself." Also i know that he can be an asshole to fans sometimes. We MADE Wale here in DC. We were the ones to make him popular locally 1st. And with the help of Tabi Bonney, he started making more noise. But he needs to humble himself in my opinion and just start putting out fire tracks that don't compromise his artistic integrity. Stop trying to please the radio and the masses and make music from ur heart again. It was better when undid that, anyway.

Wale didn’t play the industry game. And people rode the wave of hating him when he started beefing with meek and others over things perceived to be petty. Yet 99% of these artists are equally as “ sensitive “ and get no hate. So at the end of the day he wasn’t marketable as a lyricist. Just as a single guy. Songs like lotus and bad didn’t catch a fan base. Just tht general audience. To know how well he raps you would have to listen to a full project. If you’re not a mumble rapper today or have a marketing strategy like a drake it’s going to be hard for a pure lyricist to pop in the industry. Ie lupe mos def canibus etc etc

The problem is he claims to be a real emcee. He's definitely qualified to be a conscious emcee, but you can't be conscious and fail this hard at being self aware. For example. You look at J. Cole, he never claims to be hard, maybe he spits hard verses, but that's it. He also doesn't hesitate to write about his personal failures and shortcomings. Combine his realness with believable stories about the journey of his life, and undeniable lyricism, and how can you deny that he deserves the spot he has. Wale is not that. All of his lyrics revolve around how great he thinks he is. It carries over because when he conducts interviews he's really this arrogant. He'll never let you inside to see his other dimensions because it looks like he's afraid to look weak. Vulnerable. He can't lyrically reflect on his real self, because from what's apparent, his real self is an asshole. So I mean, I'm a fan of his work, honestly he has some good music, but he just isn't top tier to me, because he can't get over himself. Maybe G.O.O.D. Music would have been a better fit for him than Mayback Music Group
