Indian scientist Dr. Yusuf Hamied's proposal to cheaply manufacture and sell life-saving AIDS medications makes him "one of the great individuals of the 21st century," according to journalist Katherine Eban. Despite initial pushback from the global pharmaceutical industry against Hamied's proposal, they ultimately gave in to enormous public pressure and "waived their patents so that Indian manufactures could make these AIDS cocktails at a very low price."
