Just for those who want to know there is legit gameplay past level 29 in Tetris it just requires special techniques like hypertapping or rolling to achieve piece movement fast enough to continue gameplay. Edit: 2+ years later and I wanted to put this here. It's crazy what has happened to the tetris scene in just two years, on both my home game of Tetrio, and to a much larger extent, classic, I am still heavily invested in tacking the progress of the tetris scene as a whole, from rolling becoming super consistent, all the way up to the recent rebirth dog achieved despite what we thought being impossible such a short time ago, it'll be beyond entertaining to see where we are in another 2 years, 4 years, or even longer, and I'm sure I'll update this comment again as long as it gets interactions, which is seemingly has to this current day, and I'm happy to see a small discussion as been born from that, truly. Cheers to more years of tetris!

We eventually passed floor 99, and the game kept going, but the floor counter was wrong; I think it just displayed 10 or something, I don't remember. The Animal Crossing one probably has a technical reason behind. There are the so called "Year 2036" and "Year 2038" Problems. I explain the latter first, even though 2038 wouldn't fit in this case, but hear me out. So as you might know, the clock in basically every computer counts every second passed since the 01.01.1970 00:00. This is known as the "UNIX Clock" and it is in basically every device and computer. So this is basically a number which counts up for every second. However, in computing a number can't be indefinitely big, as there is no computer with infinite memory. So there are datatypes which have "Physical" limits set, if you so will. In case of the unix clock we're using a so called "integer". On older system integers are 32 bit ones. Meaning they basically have 32 digits when written in binary form. The maximum value a 32bit integer can have is "2,147,483,647" once it would need to count +1 more, it "rolls over". It basically goes all the way to it's possible minimum of "−2,147,483,648". It just can't count "one more", it's not possible. Now, what happens when we reach the "roll over" on the Unix clock? Well, on the 19th January 2038, at exactly 3:14:07 AM (UTC) this rollover will occur and the clock "resets" to 13th December 1901 8:45:52 PM (UTC) since it's number is now negative. Most modern devices and computers of easily the last decade won't be affected by this bug, as we're now since quite some time in the 64bit era including operating systems using 64bit, meaning we have far more space now until the UNIX Clock will "roll over". Sometime in 292 billion years this would happen. So don't worry, you will most likely not be affected by this bug. However, the Wii, from all i could find out, is still a 32bit system, and it will be affected by it. But why would Animal Crossing limit it to 2036 and not 2038? It is still 2 years. Well... in the NTP protocol (which syncs your time with e.g. a internet service) the same bug persists, however NTP is build up a bit different which means that exact same bug will hit NTP 2 years EARLIER in ... 2036. I guess just to be safe, the Animal Crossing devs decided to just cut everything off starting 2036 and roll the clock back to 2000. Afterall, you can limit it software side still. With that avoiding potential other problems.

Gonna be that person to bring this up. likely not the first and not the last. Tetris for NES, has no definable limit. as 29 is it's "Kill Screen" But is entirely still playable past it, and it even functions the same as it would if you just never hit 29, never increasing the speed. The highest i've personally seen is in the mid 60's as that's the point where your endurance is just gassing out, but to be honest. If you were just insanely long winded and skilled enough, you could play forever. with no real limit. The process of both Hyper tapping and rolling is something that was discovered to help players get past what is normally a great challenge, but i've even seen some traditional pad players reach high 30's just through sheer skill. It's become actually a problem, as tournament matches are growing much longer and thus, not ending on time.
@SgvSth2 жыл бұрын
"If you were just insanely long winded and skilled enough, you could play forever. with no real limit." Sadly this is wrong. The StackRabbit AI developed by Greg Cannon was able to clear any level when able to move pieces as fast as possible. In July 2021, StackRabbit got to Level 237 with a Tetris, which ended up with the game crashing. So, you can play up to Level 229 fine, but you risk crashing sometime past that point.

Tetris past level 29 is possible. Humans have gone significantly past it. There was a bot that found the ACTUAL end to the game, thousands of levels in, where the game becomes unable to calculate the score because of it being too high, and it crashes.

I think I already know what the Animal Crossing one will be. The reason behind the limit is that December 31st, 2035 is the highest possible date that can be represented by a Unix timestamp. So either it will just loop around to the smallest Unix timestamp, or it will overflow into other data and chaos will happen.

Dr. MARIO for Game Boy soft locks on level 28. Level 25 and 26 are the two hardest levels, but if you beat them, level 27 is actually (comparatively) easy to beat. Level 28 will then load all its viruses, but Mario's evidently gone home because he's not there to throw any more pills, leaving you to simply watch the viruses dance on the screen. Forever.
