The 806 foot ship James L. Oberstar arrived under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN. I started this video off by showing you what happens when the Lift Bridge prepares for a ship to arrive/depart. You will see how vehicle traffic stops, bells start ringing and an audible announcement starts playing via speakers that tells people that the bridge will be going up. I then record the bridge's full rise to 135'.
The second part of the video shows the ship arriving through the ship canal and point out very cool features on it.

It was in the early 70’s when my parents, siblings and myself got to ride on the bridge as the laker passed below our feet. The Eastwardly pedestrian walkway had a section caged off for the safety of tourists. The walkway and roadway is constructed of steel grating, so you could clearly view a vessel passing below. Us kids made sure we stood where the Laker’s stack would pass. This practice was discontinued many years ago, I’m now 63. Thanks ever so much for jogging a GREAT memory!

Yeah, you used to be able to ride the bridge: I was under it once looking up at folks! My uncle was the Construction Super for the BN construction in Allouez, Wisconsin: the bucket loader and belt transport for ore. I can recall seeing the Fitz in drydock and other places around the harbor a few times: my uncle got to meet a few of the crew and it was from that old GN dock that the last voyage commenced.

Mike, this is a great question, I’ve never thought about it. I’m guessing a tow truck would get it out of there? The vessel would have to go further down and come through the superior ship entry. There’s no bridge there, so there’s no chance that could happen as far as being blocked.
@mikewatson4644
@mikewatson4644 Жыл бұрын
@@vibewithmike So if the bridge isn't clear of vehicles and people, it won't go up? And the vessel that is on the way in would have to make a quick turn or stop? No way that a tow truck could respond quick enough for the ship to not have to divert. Thanks for the response.
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
That’s correct, the Lift Bridge operator checks on everything before that bridge goes up. Also, the bridge goes up well before a ship would come through, the main reason, in case there was a malfunction with the bridge going up so the vessel could turn around.

Hi there. Technically the Duluth Bridge is a drawbridge. It's a special type called a lift bridge. The other two types of drawbridges are called swing bridges and bascule bridges. The original design of the Duluth bridge had a car which swung across the canal. Eventually this was replaced and a lift section added. They used most of the original pieces and just added additional support posts and the road section. And new cables and motors. Each type of bridge has pros and cons. www.civilconcept.com/pros-and-cons-of-a-drawbridge/

My father, born in 1909, who lived in Superior and then Duluth till he graduated from college, told me that at one time people were allowed to ride the bridge up, but then after an unfortunate incident the practice was stopped. I have made numerous trips to the area and have seen quite a few of the vessels you feature; quite a sight for someone from the high and dry Texas Panhandle. Hi Mike. Really enjoy your videos. Question for you: to your knowledge has the 135' clearance ever not been quite enough such that an antenna or other item on the vessel's flying bridge or superstructure didn't make it under? I'd also like to echo one of the other comments who suggests a you post an interview with the lift operator. Thank you.
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
I would love to interview the Lift Bridge operator, but I’m just a regular guy with a camera. Not sure he/she would even consider that? There have been no issues with clearance because vessels have information provided regarding the height of each bridge they would pass under. I appreciate you watching Steve.
