I was warned about claustrophobia before my first scan. No worries, it is a wide open tube that you could get out of at any time. The noises are really loud and really weird but just know that it is only noise. MRIs and CRTs are not anything to worry about, just stay calm and relax. You are not trapped.

I watched this video and read comments prior to my MRI scan and was a bit apprehensive after reading some experiences. I had the scan today and Honestly!! It was like being on a tanning bed! (I don’t use them anymore 😂) the noise wasn’t as loud as I’d expected, I was given noise cancelling headphones. Given a rubber ball thing to hold and press if I needed anything or to get out of the machine. I had a brain scan so had the coil over my face and then rolled into the machine. It’s quite roomy in there and as you should stay still anyway had no need for extra space. I was in my thoughts and closed my eyes the whole time. I Was singing a song in my head and there were some judders and d.d.d.d sounds.. but nothing alarming or uncomfortable at all. It was quite therapeutic to be honest! If you are worried don’t be. It really isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be and I wanted to ease somebody’s anxiety by coming back and leaving this comment. Good luck and don’t worry like I did. Had it done today in a small machine for images of my eyes. The waiting to go into the scanner & the radiographer’s repeat questions increased my anxiety but I accept that prep & checks are v. important & necessary. - you don’t want any metal being moved by the magnets particularly if the metal is deliberately placed internally to aid a body function - The bed rose a few inches before going into the machine or at least it did for me. Not tall. The coil had been “locked“ into position over my face and the lower reaches of its frame brushed my clavicle which surprised me. I guess if I wanted I could have pulled the coil off but I want the doctors to see the images more than I wanted to panic and initially I was deeply panicked. Breathing rapidly and being fussy and contemplating a big I’m not doing it!! You need to be still throughout the imaging in a small space. Easily done without deep thought I’m a over-thinker 😊 but I forced myself to stop. The music helped if I focused & really listened but sometimes the machine was so loud the music couldn’t be heard. The longer I was inside the scanner the more confident I was they’d get the images required and these thoughts helped. I did relax eventually as my eyes needed to be closed throughout which encouraged relaxation. and stop me searching for danger. For me it was like being swaddled so the more I relaxed the easier it was to just submit. 20 mins in total - the hardest part was not knowing every single control freak detail of what was about to happen. I’m glad it was successfully completed.

I didn’t open my eyes for any second, and I’ve tried to imagine myself in an open and beautiful beach. To the second MRI I asked they give me something to cover my eyes because even though I had my eyes closed I could feel too much light over me. The paper they gave me helped to diffuse the light over my eyes. This enables me to lie still during the exam. There have been times that I could not sleep during the exam so I pretend that I am on a battlefield as a soldier during one of the world wars. The noise of the machine seems to match this scenario very well. Try this when you get an MRI done. This should keep your mind off any discomfort you may have during the exam.

I’ve just been for a prostate MRI in the U.K. It wasn’t too bad. The machine was quite wide, but the radiologist did say that other machines he uses are smaller. There’s not much room above though, but the machine doesn’t have a back to it, so you can see the actual ceiling if you look up and back a bit. So I didn’t feel particularly claustrophobic. I was given ear plugs and headphones. They played music but it was very low and broke up a few times, so it would’ve been better without. The noises are a little strange - it sounds like a spaceship is about to explode in a sci-fi film or something. But all in all the experience was okay and nothing to worry about.

I read lots of others' experiences the night before and built a fear, but I want to reassure everyone going for a head scan that it was honestly fine. Best piece of advice when you book is to ask for a wide bore scanner. It's bigger so not close to your face. They did put a frame over my head to keep it still but it wasnt enclosed and they positoned a mirror on the top so if you open your eyes you can see that your legs are outside the scanner and you can see the Technician. Mine was only 15 mins and it did go quickly. The sounds are just like being in a rave really, fast beats which speed up. When i closed my eyes i pretended I was just lying on the beach listening to dance music. I thought i would have a panic attack but i was actually very calm because zi could see out. Honestly if I can do it anyone can. It's fine! Good luck

However, the outcome may enable you to stay alive, or at least help you know how long you have so you can get on with fulfilling your bucket list. A quick update. I had my 3rd MRI done this week and I've had anxiety for weeks knowing I have to do this again. Did a lot of reading and watched many videos on how to cope with MRI claustrophobia and nothing really helped. I took an oral sedative before the MRI and even that didn't help me relax. As soon as I went in, I panicked and told the tech to pull me out. It's the coil cage that they put over my head that scares me. We chatted for a bit then he suggested we use the mirror attachment that lets you see your feet and the rest of the room, including the control room and the Tech in my case. That was the answer for me, I went in and I had zero fear because I can see the room using the mirror. He said some people don't like the mirror, but in my case, it was the solution. You can bring someone with you and you can see them through the mirror. Also, with the new machines, it took only 20 mins instead of 45 mins on older machines. Good luck everyone.

I have been a "Lab rat" in research studies that require MRIs . That is that I am not being treated or evaluated for any condition but researchers are testing the MRI and/or other processes on me. I have found that MRI gurneys are not designed for comfort not as much as they should be. Being in an MRI machine is pure torture. It is not the machine itself but the gurney you have to lie on. The gurneys on the machines are made of hard material and furthermore, the head rest is designed in the most un-ergonomic way considering it is meant to rest your head on. It seems that engineers and designers just do not consider the fact that the back of the human head is shaped in a way so that the "occipital bun" area protrudes fairly similar to one end of a football and it means that the rest of the weight of the head will apply a lot of pressure on that protruding area and if you have to lie perfectly still and not move the "occipital bun" area will hurt like mad after as little as a few minutes and sometimes you have to lie on a MRI gurney for hours. The head rest should be designed so that the back of neck is supported or the neck , while a person is lying down, will be affected by gravity and thus create more of a downward pull on the entire head that is felt on the "occipital" bun protrusion. The head rest of a MRI machine should be designed so that the "occipital bun" area does not touch the head rest at all. The person's head should be tilted with the back of the neck supported so that the back of the head does not rest on any part of the gurney. This would be a better design I believe and I have written to the companies that design MRI gurneys. Maybe some MRI gurney designer will see this. But overall a better idea is to have stand-up MRI machines ( in which you actually sit up rather than lie down for the procedure) in which a person does not have to lie down unless absolutely necessary for the MRI. These kinds of MRIs exist but from what I have observed they are rarely in hospitals or research facilities that use MRIs. They are only in certain "MRI" radiology businesses. In fact I have never seen a "stand up" ("sit down") MRI in any medical facility. Of course it would be very expensive to replace the older MRI machines with newer ones in which people can sit up while getting an MRI done.

All those noises make it sound like it is malfunctioning and ready to spin apart . I just imagine all the protons in my brain being flipped around . Wondering if the tech is playing Candy Crush behind the screen or went to lunch .

I asked "oh? whaddaya got?", he goes "everything" and sure enough, they even had some obscure hard rock which, combined with all the noise from the machine, actually nearly put me to sleep during each segment, lol!

I had an MRI a few months ago, I was already disoriented before it began. I remember them asking me what type of music I wanted to listen to and I don't remember answering and I was listening to a very fuzzy led zepplin and other classic rock and lots of very loud sounds. For some reason I was seeing my feet while I was looking up (I think?) I think there was a mirror or something. Felt like it went on forever. I believe they injected me too at some point. One of my results said "with contrast"

UPDATE I Cryed in the scanner, has I didnt realise it was going to move up thats when I started to panick abit. I felt like I was going to be crushed. I wish they had told me that while taking the images the scanner would move me up. Has I entered the hospital I saw the scanner and it was a Siemens brand. Like in this video, It moved up about twice. And was going to press panick button twice. Before that the lady spoke to me and asked me if im okay, has she knows im anxious and very claustrophobic. I said im scared. then she said dont worry you will be in scanner for ten mins but il try make it 8mins. But the staff told me dont look down and tilt my head and look the other end. Which helped alot has I could see the opening, I DID IT. Just waiting for my results now. I think if I would have looked down and saw that I was fully in the scanner enclosed and trapped from one end. I would have freaked out again like last time. Just glad I did it now

I’ve had three MRI’s. Once before my lumbar spinal fusion surgery, and it was a closed MRI. They put a washcloth over my eyes, and hearing protection in my ears. Second was an open MRI, before my lumbar Lamenectomy surgery. Third MRI was open also, and I had head phones where my choice of music was playing. I also had same before the Lamenectomy procedure. I’d already had a hip replacement by the third MRI. I have had several CT scans over the past 20 years. Didn’t have to have an MRI before my 12 hour scoliosis spinal fusion surgery. Just a CT scan. Only thing I had trouble with the MRI’s, is the longest was one hour, and my back hurt so bad, I was about in tears.

It was literally so much better than I imagined!! Don’t be scared. Also it wasn’t loud at all with the ear plugs. My head was just out of the machine but I think even if I was inside, I would have been just fine. Just book the wider machine if they have one. Also I thought ahead and dressed without metal And they let me keep my clothes on and just had to put a gown over it. Good luck to anyone who has an MRI coming up! It’s really not that bad!!! My mri test: The 1st part was that they put iv in my arm and causes metalic taste in my mouth and didnt change anything. During the test, my back, buttocks and neck hurts during the test. I was in alot of pain wanting to get up. 2nd part, they put contrast in my arm, and it made me cough, gag and retch a few times. Idk if it was normal or not. Anyways it was almost done. Tips: if your bored while the exam is going, look at the ceiling with your eyes to see if theirs any lines. The lines are colored black to me. And if you look closely, its moving back and forth. Meaning the machine is moving back and forth. So if you see the line moving up, your moving down. Line moving down means your moving up. You can look at the lines for fun if your bored. Just use your eyes though not your head. Think of anything that will put your mind out of the exam and into something fun in your mind. Its hard if your in a lot of pain but yeah. If you need to urinate, put the watery or running waters out of your head. And instead not think about it but think about the exam or the fun things in your mind. Final note: its a very easy test. You just need to lie completely still and the test is very long. So you have to wait. I moved a little because i was in pain.

I just had my 2nd brain mri yesterday. I had my first one back in 2020. The one I had yesterday was with the contrast and was maybe 10 minutes longer. Yesterday I wore a sleeping mask and that really made a lot of difference. Both times the mri went fine but I can definitely understand the issue of claustrophobia for many patients. I luckily didn't have that because I kept my eyes closed each time but it was harder to keep them closed the first time without the sleeping mask over the eyes. The only thing is that neither mri scan showed anything of major issues in my brain and I have been suffering from un balanced issues from vertigo in the past. I doubt any of my doctors will schedule any more brain mri. Yes they are loud but ear plugs definitely help with the noise.

A good video but.. Where I come from the standard procedure is to remove all but underwear (bra is removed!) to minimize risk of (ferromagnetic) metal. That includes hairties. A Surgical garment is given or if necessary a bathrobe if a blanket doesn't do the trick. On top of that we ask to also check for other metals like removable teeth, jewelry, hairpins/-bands and piercings. (not only for safety, but also image quality reasons) Before an exam starts the patient needs to fill in a form which gives us more info, like pacemakers, recent/old surgeries (metal pins, stents, implants, mechanical heart valves, etc), metalworker or not, tattoos (some old inks contain metal), etc... If everything is checked, only then the patient can be allowed to get the exam and enter the MRI room (concerning metals). Ps.: There are ofcourse also other things that are being checked for f.e. contrast administering reasons if contrast would be necessary.

Actually, you can ask the technician your concern about this. For the neck part you will probably have to go in head first. If you prefer to go with your feet first for the lower back, you can always address that! They will most likely do it that way. For scanning purposes it's just a matter of adjusting a feet/head first setting on the console. No big deal. I don't know the country you live in, but it's possible that these are going to be two different appoinments.
