Took 40 seconds for him to die with all these bullets in him, quite impressive, normally a human would die in just 5 seconds after being shot in multiple arteries. In short: John is just built different.

You have to also consider the fact that he's being shot with repeaters, rifles, and pistols. The pistols I understand he could stand for that time, but being hit with a rifle is a horse kick.

Arthur death only seems "peaceful" because there's emotional music playing and we get to see his final peaceful thoughts. But in reality he died a slow death from a disease that makes you cough up blood immediately after being heavily beaten and subsequently left to die. And as the other guy pointed out, that's only if we're talking about the "canon" ending, which is the least brutal of them.

i glitched the game out and managed to use Dynamite somehow way back when the game had just released, and killed EVERYONE there, but somehow, floating weapons came back with a vengence and killed John anyways lol.

The biggest difference is ross' facial expressions. When John doesn't shoot, ross grimaces in disgust or shame as he knows the shooting could not fully be justified. Ross wanted a good ending to a long story where he's the hero killing the bad guy. John not firing creates a moral dilemma where a clear black & white good versus evil encounter was preferred. When John does shoot, ross has a smug look of pride as his preferred version of the story is what will be history despite the true context. Another little detail is whether John fires or not ross does show a little sympathy in has last expression then shaking his head "no."

In the context of the story John gives himself up because he knows they will continue to chase him which endangers his family. He chooses to pull out his pistol because they are going to kill him anyway to mop up the entire Dutch gang so why not shoot Ross six times only to see him completely unharmed in the cutscene.

@Lessferr Jack wasn't really a part of the gang (didn't engage in heists), so there was no notoriety from killing him. Besides, Ross assumed that Jack would fuck off. We don't know the exact fates of the other gang members, but they either died or are out of Ross's jurisdiction.

I feel like it'd be more symbolic and a last act of defiance if he hadn't shot anyone cause imagine. The man and legend known from across the entire desert, being a violent, bloodthirsty, sociopathic outlaw, stood against an army with an old revolver in hand, and he just... Doesn't shoot. He stands there and accepts his fate, giving himself peace as he gets gunned down

I used cheats to add a mauser pistol to my inventory, and I tagged everyone that I could, and by the end, I had killed everyone I tagged in 1 second. I killed so many that ross advanced towards John, and the marshals present were dead, but in the final cutscene, we see Earl Hollingsworth watching John die next to Ross and walk away from his own corpse? This game is crazy.

well yer a bit slow with the aim I did hit all of them with the Mauser, BUT there is ONE guy ye canny see and Mark in dead eye and that's the 1 Person that kills you. Saddly ye canny equip the Evens Rifle with 22 shots or all of them and theier horses would've been dead.

John dying was so pointless, tragedy just for tragedy, I hate it, no meaning, if he died saving his son or something, maybe Edgar Ross’s band takes Jack hostage and gives John an ultimatum between his life and his sons, John chooses his son, and *then* makes the fruitless final stand and gets blasted like a rabid bear, it would be better, but no, instead of going out the fucking back door and making a run for it, he just walks out the front to greet the firing squad of cowards, it’s like he wanted to die, it doesn’t make sense, and is lazy writing objectively speaking, they could’ve done more with John

@@gavinshirley Exactly even though I’ve seen comments saying that if they focus on Jack in the third game it’s not going to have the same western vibes as the other ones. I personally think Jack should be the main character because even though the outlaw era ended by the mid 1900’s (please let me know if I’m wrong because I’m not sure) it can still have the western vibes because not everyone was able to afford the first automobiles so they had to resort to horses. That was an option for a method of transportation specially in rural areas. The game could focus on the agents trying to locate Jack after what happened to Ross. They find him and maybe one of the main agents gives him two options: Jail or serve his country by joining World War 1. And at the very end of the game Jack should have redemption, being able to escape the life that John and Abigail never wanted for him.
