I made this video to further explain why the cockpit window can be opened, if it can be opened in flight and what would happen if you do. Enjoy my friends and continue to ask me questions!

In 1990 a British Airways Flight 5390 Captain, named Tim Lancaster was sucked out of the window at 23000 feet when the window glass broke midair causing explosive depressurization. The Captain's shoes got stuck in the yoke which prevented him from being lost. The crew members also held his legs. The copilot immediately lowered the plane and did an emergency landing at the nearest airport, while the crew kept holding the captain's legs. Although they believed him to be dead, they didn't let him go to prevent the risk of him being sucked into an engine or do other damage to plane. But actually he was found alive, got treated, recovered and returned to business few months later. The cause of the accident was a faulty replacement of the glass window ordered by that very captain before that very flight.

I remember an accident of a British Airways flight back in the early 90s. The cockpit window of a BAC1-11 broke because of a too thinly bolt. The captain was pulled out while cabine crew members hold his feet. The F/O landed the aeroplane safely.

As someone not in the industry and beyond the age suitable but interested in anything mechanical I find the videos of great interest. I wonder if some of the comments from within the industry is a wish to keep the art of flying as some mystery. I do however have a request, for example you mention N1, N2 when talking about engines. As my Zimmer is not type rated any chance of explaining these in non jargon terms.Keep up the good work

Mentour, thanks for your reply, as a member of the great unwashed in the back of the plane I didn't really expect a reply. In my industry we are encouraged not to use TLA's, oops, three letter abbreviations. Very difficult when it is day to day language, I suppose it is like Alpha etc.

Mentour!! I am 13 and I live in the Netherlands. I have been interested in flight since I was 6. This year I flew a boeing 737-800 on a flight simulator and I loved it!! Now I want to be a pilot but everything and everyone says that the chance is 95% that you'll waste your money on the pilot education because you won't get a job. Is it really that bad!!!?? Im only thirteen so I have lots of years to decide but I want something to work towards. Is there a chance that in 4 to 6 years the ods of becoming a pilot increased? I want to become a pilot so bad!! If I can't be a pilot on an airline what are other jobs that are ascociated with flight? Thanks in advance!

OK, I'm confused. So during flight you can depressurize the cockpit without the rest of the cabin in order to open that window if you get ashed. But then the cockpit's oxygen masks drop and you handle the visibility problem while wearing your masks, then repressurize the cockpit and restow the masks?

Crawford 2048 Most Planes have sensors that prevent that, but actually a captain named Hans Ulrich Lutz did that on a Saab 340 which totaled the plane. He was fired as an instructor but kept his job due to a pilot shortage. He would be killed in Crossair 3597 several years later for going below Minimum Descent Altitude on an approach to Zürich.

Make a detailed video on the Boeing 777 door, like Airbus, the doors move upward a centimeter or 2, and then outwards. The 737 door makes an air-tight seal against the door frame. the 777 and Airbus seemingly doesn't make such a seal. What is going on with those doors? * confused *

ReHi Mentour Pilot: Many of your videos which I have seen are more broadly based than this one, and in those there has always been much good advice for younger generations. (I wish I had had that when I was young, but unfortunately what I had was anything but!) Hence I am happy for the younger generations that they have learning opportunities my generatipon never had, and were much abused both physically in some cases, sexually in others and intelectually in still others (the latter was more what happened to me.) While I am not yet in a position to upload videos to You tube, closer to that goal is the idea of uploading sound tracks to Google Drive and providing soft shareable links in You Tube comments. Note re "Google Drive": Most Windows users simply think of Google Drive as the windows app the Google provides. However the app itself does not exist in Linux. Nonetheless, underlying that app is the Google Drive API (or application interface), and Linux can use that to interact very well. the GUI part shows up in Nautilus, the Gnome Desktop file manager that comes with many Linux distributions. (I use Fedors Workstation, currently at version 25, with 26 expected around July 2017.) hence no compatibility issues between Windows and Linux users, and likely littyle with MacOSX (Tiger and up). That said, and being one who loves public speaking be it in Englsih., French or Spanish, especially on complex and sociologically contgroversial topics, I can use my voice to enhance the emotional depiction of my content, even though with advancing age it has become rather gravelly. Note I am not looking to get involved with adsense unless I have to, nor open my efforts to any sort of monetisation. This avoides any co-dependent interest on direct benefits, maintaining my stolid principole of independence. North a,merica: I noticed Damien, your first American cadet, and am hoping that maybe tyou will end up[ acquiring a Canadian cadet. This might also prove to be a special oipportunity to some young person of Inuit heritage, as the north need aviators and aviation sup[port staff. Once In the Greater Montreal area, I encountered such a young man who had come here from the Kujjuaq area to study and become an aircraft mechanic. For that sort, I say "Go for it!". It was also a chance for me to learn a tiny bit about life up there. Piloitds who want to fly that sort of stuff may be flying airbusses of perhaps 135 passengers from Montreal up north,. where the passengers then transfer to smaller planes serivng the many settlements along the Povungnituk river., running Wast from Ungava Bay to Hudson''s bay.. Naviagetion and radio usage are alse a special situation in the CVanadian Arctic, partly due to the wide and dynamic deviances between magnetic and true north, as well as other considerations in regardfs to radio wave propagation, which, I think may be due to the proximity to Magnetic North. Arctic scenery can also be very striking at times. I have several photos downloaded from Nunanet taken in the tundra. these photographers have a sense of natural beauty of their own. CRM: This subject also, I noted soe time back, and it seems to me that before a cadet even starts to do a type approval, or hopes to do so, he should be screened for potential propblems in the interpersonal area, so money is not spent if the candidat is profoundly not apt. Unruly passenger problems: This scourge has been monitored by IATA for some years now, and much of it seems alcohol related. Given the psyychopathologies that undely alcohol and substance abuse, and the experience we have with drinking and driving, it would seem appropriate for all IATA signatory countries to legislate obligatory breathalyser tests immediately before boarding and searches to see that no hiddel alcohol or intoxicants are being carried onboard. These questions ar enot going to go away in any hurry,. so you might feel it appropos to adress them for all??

Every time a plane lands a load of rubber is left on the runway.Why not spool up the landing wheels to match the ground speed.This would increase the number of allowable landings per tyre and reduce the cost of removing rubber from the runway.

No therefore you should fly at a low enough altitude to do this.
@majortom45436 жыл бұрын
Not true, dont hear the other guys, they most probably are microsoft 98 flight simulator amateurs. You can depressurize the cockpit alone because if there is an electrical fire behind the panels where a fire extinguisher cant reach, you open the window and since there is very few oxygen at very high altitudes, the fire will cease to exist. But the pilots obviously have to put their masks on to keep breathing. Then continue to a safe flight emergency landing on the nearest airport.

@RUDYLOVE727 жыл бұрын
thanks I always wanted to become a pilot and now Im trying to learn everything from airports to airplanes and airlines and how Pilots operate and their language and communications with the tower
@EinkOLED7 жыл бұрын
Depends on the aircraft. But for normal jet engined aircraft the pressurised/pnuematic air is bled from the engine rooted towards the packs where it is cooled, filtered and introduced into the cabin via the mix manifold. The cabin altitude pressure is maintained via the outflow valve which controls how much air exits the plane (like a tap), therefore regulating the cabin pressure/altitude which is controlled by a computer.
