The reason the height increases with higher elevation is that the pressure outside the bottle (atmospheric pressure) is lower the further up you go. The pressure inside the bottle is constant before it is opened. At a given pressure the fluid in the bottle can hold a certain amount of gas dissolved. As soon as you open the bottle, the gas begins to escape because the pressure inside and outside now match. These are the bubbles. When you add mentos the tiny holes (invisibly small holes) in the mentos serve as nucleation sites for the gas in the coke to escape faster. So, larger fountain higher up you go!

I literally screamed: “COKE! ARISE!!!” When I saw the coke erupt

awesome vid, but should have started at sea level, and it would be really cool to do a follow up where you visit places that are below sea level and repeat the experiment

How many trials did you do at each altitude?

Three trials each

At the summit there was a slight air push when it was almost at the top. Check again😂

I agree...we were definitely having trouble with wind at the summit

I haven't done this mentos thing myself but it is very interesting to see you do it,I am thinking of doing it myself but I'll do it and try to quickly close the lid and make it explode. Still thinking why the hell I saw H20 as C20 in my chemitry test. And made many stupid mistakes like that. And did not even realise it

Colorado is my home state! I'm happy to see you use diet coke so that you're not feeding populations of ants. 🙏 I know it's presumed that colas contain a higher concentration of CO2 than other sodas, but I wonder if generic colas contain a much at the authentic Doet Coke 🤔

Thank you for commenting! I've done quite a few measurements on the pressure inside various brands of soda. The pressure varies more with the time since the bottle has been sealed than the brand of soda. It's crazy, but sealed soda bottles do leak CO2 over time. That's why sodas have expiration dates. Storing at colder temperatures keeps the CO2 in longer

Probably less gravity at higher altitudes, also less pressure (I think)
