What Happens When African Americans Say Enough Is Enough And Get Tired Of Accommodating 'Whiteness'?

Roland Martin, Dr. Greg Carr, Melik Abdul and Cleo Manago discussed what happens when African Americans get tired of having to make special accommodations to make white America feel comfortable.
This nuanced conversation came on the heels of Angela Whitehead's uncomfortable encounter with Billings, Montana police officers who walked through her front door without a warrant or permission.
When African Americans have had enough of making accommodations for "whiteness" what should happen? How should Black America engage with their white counterparts?

To someone who hates you they couldn't care either way. The price for freedom is keeping our God laws like times of old when we once ruled and they feared us because God favored us and they couldn't touch us. Death is a sinners sentence.

Being Democratic and liberal can be two different pieces of the same coin. I support Democratic agendas, but not ones who keep us down like welfare either you make enough money and we cut you off and now you can't live, or you're dependent on us. Make a system of give and take where the more you make, there's a reasonable decrease of benefits. I don't agree that someone who thinks they're a man should be able to use the opposite gender bathroom. That's a mental issue where the people in question are struggling with their identity. Sometimes it's a chemical imbalance and other times I just don't know. Often times though, when things go wrong with our bodies, there will be an abnormal increase or decrease of certain chemicals. This speaks to imbalance-caused illness but often times it's taboo to talk about it because people state that it's just who they are. I don't make it my business to bother other people about their choices and freedoms though unless it impedes on mine regarding common sense things or things that would impede my liberties and social decencies. Just because you think you're a boy at 21 doesn't make it so. Society calls that an adult and so does the law. Just because you think you can sprout wings and fly doesn't mean you can, and just because a male thinks he's a woman won't currently make his DNA shape shift into one. These are facts as of today, but those facts will offend some super liberal who thinks that their perception should be our reality. More to the point, and to reiterate, not all Democrats are necessarily liberals. We simply disagree with the majority of policies that Republicans make and agree on some others. We can't sway right, but to swing any more to the left would be to go into an uncomfortable lane where people "feel" that things should be this or that.

The reality is that those rights weren't written with us in mind either. Case in point, the 2nd Amendment is not for Black people, it's for white people only. If not, you'll have to explain to me why Philando Castille, a card-carrying member of the NRA, in an open-carry state, was assassinated with his wife and very young daughter just inches from him. Explain to me why Tamir Rice was murdered by police, in a playground, in another open-carry state with a TOY GUN in his hand with no warning whatsoever. You forget that the writers of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights OWNED SOME OF OUR ANCESTORS! NEVER FORGET THAT CONTEXT!!! With that said, it doesn't surprise me with the tactics weve had to undertake to win those rights. Think about it. Who else on the face of this planet has had to prove their humanness to any government to be protected by that same government? If Black women truly had the rights that the illusion says it does, Sandra Bland would still be among us.

As a Black woman, I tend to disagree somewhat....I am the daughter of two parents, an African American man, who married my Nigerian mother....first....then started a family. I am the "middle" child...I have an older brother and a younger brother. The majority of my friends and acquaintances are part of the "When The Black Family was Intact, Successful, and Strong" movement. Our family was/is a very traditional. Both my parents understood their respective roles in our home. My father.....leader....head of household....final decision maker. My mother.....nurturer....caretaker of our family and the home. She didn't skip a beat....even when she decided to pursue a degree. She didn't just jump and decide that she did not need to confer with our dad. She talked to him about it, asked if he would be okay with it....he told her yes, as long as college would not interfere with her role in the home. Well, she earned her degree, we were all proud of her. Her role in the home ran smoothly, she never skipped a beat. As a girl, I paid close attention to the manner in which my parents communicated, interacted with each other. She wasn't and isn't loud, boisterous, she didn't roll her neck, and talked smack about being "equal" to him. She wasn't....neither was he "equal" to her. What I learned from my mother, is that a woman can get what she wants, whatever want that may be, by being feminine and soft spoken. Making decisions without his approval, wagging her finger, putting her hand in his face, would have been viewed as disrespectful to him. I learned from my father that a man who effectively LEADS in his home, will be highly regarded, respected, and loved. It is because of my parents, that my husband and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary, in April of this year. We also are the parents of two awesome sons, ages 27 and 24. Both are married. My first grandchild was born in July of 2019, my second, was born in March of this year. In a marriage....a solid marriage....BOTH husband and wife know their roles. There is no such thing as "equal" in a marriage. I'm not equal to my husband, nor is he "equal" to me. However our ROLES are EQUALLY IMPORTANT. LASTLY.....RESPECT IS "EARNED".....NOT "OWED". EXAMPLE: BEN CARSON was highly respected, as the world's BEST pediatric neurosurgeon. He has travelled the world over, performing surgery on, and saving the lives of children. On the other hand, Carson is not only the absolutely WORST HEAD of HUD, I have ever witnessed. He is also an entitled shyster....he used tens of thousands of money....MONEY THAT WAS TO BE ALLOTTED TO NYC housing....to purchase FURNITIURE FOR HIS OFFICE/HOME. In addition he has made deep cuts in federal housing dollars that should have gone to helping the people who reside in federal housing. It is partly because his actions, that residents, more often than not, have no heat, hot water. Many of their apts are infested with roaches, bedbugs, waterbugs, mice, rats. Guard rails on uppermost floors, are still broken. Idiots are still pissing in elevators, and hallways. Several residents have been evicted, because they refused to adhere to the NO SMOKING CIGARETTES AND/OR WEED in the apts, as well as violating the "stay 30 feet away from the buildings while smoking" rule. People have lost their lives falling to their deaths in elevator shafts, due to fact that the actual elevators were stuck on another floor, and the residents just walking into an open space. I'll say this again... Respect BEGETS Respect. Respect is EARNED, NOT OWED. Black WOMEN who do not respect Black MEN, who believe they can curse at, physically attack, and dismiss Black men...... should NOT EXPECT to be RESPECTED by Black men. No men are obligated to "respect" Black women, who do not respect them. Brothers.....there are beautiful Black women, not of THIS COUNTRY who know their role, know how to treat a man.....when you all are ready to settle down....find yourselves a woman from "the Islands", Africa, Brazil. They know how to treat a good Black man. 😉 Best of luck to the good brothers who want and seek, good Black women! 🙂

Can I say that all or most black men or women are a certain way? Not at all. We all know what we go through in this society and no one can refute that. Look at a problem as a house or box! There are four sides! The front isn't identical to the back, but it's the same house. I have to be willing to come to your side to see what you're talking about but I don't have to stay there. And vice versa for you. In other words I'm saying to say, I see your point but I disagree or, I understand how/why you feel that way but I don't feel differently. Acknowledge peoples point to let them know you're listening . . . and be respectful.

The point is to be able to act without fear no matter what you do or say. It’s the lack of fear that keeps you safe. But, of course, fear is a tricky thing; it changes form like many emotions. So, it can also look like bravery. That kind of fear often gets us killed. To me, Harriet Tubman is the most obvious historical character of bold action without an underlying fear and hate. This is what more black people must learn. You don’t have to hate or even blame whites to boldly set them straight.

What hapoens when have had enough? Have to go back to the 1950s and 1960's to find the answer. Especially the 1960s when America was on fire (500 plus cities) and they could not handle it. My 50 year old son told me about having to take the bass out of his voice. He said it hurts vocal cords. Malcolm X unapologetic Blackness.

@@cozycool3505 The fire of which I speak was not that one. The was the mind set that Black people in America had enough was the fire that burnt down the oppression of ghetto life for Black life in America's cities. The fire burnt very little of the actual structures of slums in which some of us lived. It burnt the oppression that allowed and created the ghettoes that extorted high rents from our people. What was burned was replaced with affordable housing and better access to programs like FHA. Banks would not lend to Black and Brown people. The fire of enough is enough burnt that down along with the slums. Slums are not and never should be our neighborhoods. No the fire of enough was enough wasn't about the structures in our neighborhoods. That fire needs to be reignited. That fire of enough was enough also burned in other ways as with the creation of the Black Panther Party, weakening of the siege the white police had on our communities.

This clearly shows that there's a subtle, but distinct difference between being Black and Blackness or socializing Black. In Melik's case, talking about the Black support of the Repugnikkkan party and any other group, association, race, creed or religion that is hostile towards Black folk, there is a calculation that is made that is based on priority. That calculation is in a question, which is "How important is the value, power, beauty of my reflection in my mirror?" If the answer is of paramount importance, you won't trade it regardless of the situation. You are fully cognizant of the impact of your thoughts, words and deeds. You are fully aware of the dividends to said impacts, both at present and in the future. Anything less than that, then they will trade it as soon as it they discover that it has value for them, regardless of who else it hurts at anywhere else at any other point in time. I really enjoyed the conversation and all its nuance. I'm going to subscribe because I need more of this for a number of reasons that I don't have the space or time to enumerate. To the good Dr's point, I am one of those whose been trying to wake up for a while. Due to the breakdown of my family structure (thanks white supremacy) I didn't have anyone like y'all growing up, but now that I've found you, I'm coming back to the well to quench my thirst. AND im gonna tell others where this well is! Peace and many blessings to you Roland, your staff and your panelists.

Cleo's castration comment confused me. That's a lot of layers to be privately unraveled. Melick's unravellings is enough. What they got wrong about Mrs. Angela Whitehead is her emotional attachment to her husband. 400 years of white men walking into black women's homes and snatching out hearts, is something we'd rather take a bullet, than feel it happen again. A well deserved shout out should go to Angela's hair braider, for sounding the alarm and recording the evidence. Not ONLY that, Angels's hair looked great. Who knew there were sisters who braid in Montana?

Mr.Martin.. Did you read powernomics by Claud Anderson! And if so did you like any points he made? Why do have to get white people to like us? We don't have enough economic power yet, and all other races build within there community and were the only ones who don't. We need our own black wall street ...like in the 60's...and we should hold back our vote until they respect and listen to our needs. Great conversation with gentleman. Lots of great points of view.

I wish I couldd like to video a thousand times. Your story about your father resonates with me so deeply. To understand that in our quest to be unapologetic and black, it means that we will suffer and not always get where we want but what we do is open doors for others, unbeknownst to them. I never looked at it like that before, but now it's clear to me. Thank you so much for the episode as one unapologetic black man to another.

Roland Martin's shows are good, but this was the best segment that I have seen. This is the best conversation among three strong Black men that I have seen (Roland Martin, Dr. Gregg Carr and Dr. Cleo Manago). I don't know what is going on with Melik. This gave me such a huge insight into the experiences of Black men when dealing with the police and with society. I knew that there was a distinction, but I didn't know that it went that deep. Appreciate the insight and bring more topics like this.
5 жыл бұрын
I will support this show again.. yes again. Finances will come again this year for 2019 b/c it is a must. On another note I find Melik to be full of deflection. He will sit there all the time with an excuse on why he supports a party that does not support black people openly. I am not saying that democrats support black people wholeheartedly, ooh no that would be an untruth. What I am saying is that they have done something and will at least fake it. Now don't get me wrong... that is not acceptable to fake it. We have to hold them accountable should we help them win their seats in office. They know that they can't do this w/o us. The republican party on the other hand will basically tell you to go screw yourself and keep it moving. Then after they screw you over will do their best to stop you from voting in the future to prevent them from keeping their jobs. Melik sits on this show and makes all these reflecting statements...like people being shot in his neighborhood... what does that have to do with supporting a republican party. He is truly a republican b/c they are kings and queens of deflection. Melik you need a major schooling in understanding that supporting a party that does not give a freak if you live or die is not something you promote. No one is telling you to be a democrat but damn... have a back bone and call your party the racist bitches that they are. You don't have to use those words but if you can sit there and say what's wrong with the Obama Administration then say what's wrong with your party too. And I am not talking that bs about I don't agree with blah blah blah BS... I'm talking about the same criticism you give Obama and his administration. Calling out all the things the did not do for black people... call it out for Republicans as well. I never heard your bumass say that. You will give that same response of "I don't agree with ...." that's as bad as the cops "I feared for my life" BS. Grow a backbone and stop being a part of drawing a wedge within our community. You are still black in case you forgot...UGH!!!

A fight broke out with the mouthy friend & the folks he was popping his mouth off to at the moment. The quiet friend didn't help him in the fight. The mouthy friend gets mad at the quiet friend.
