The videos about herd behavior are so interesting to me. I've spent a lot of time around horses, but always as individuals, never as a herd. Before I watched Friesian Horses videos, I knew only what I've read about wild horse behavior. It is just fascinating to see it closely like this with horses whose personalities I have come to know. Thank you Yvonne! You teach me so much!

You know you can probably lease the horse of your dreams. You may even strike a deal with a barn to exercise for owners in exchange for work at the barn. Years ago when I wanted to do eventing my family’s quarter horses wouldn’t do. My folks found me a thoroughbred that They could lease to buy and half the monthly payment went toward purchase. At US$10,000 was beyond my folks willingness to/ability to buy while I ‘tried out’’ Eventing. Years later when on my own, I still evented with thoroughbreds, stabled at a full service barn, got a young woman to ride for me, since I could only ride weekends as I was building a career. That way her folks didn’t have the expense of keeping a horse yet she had the joy of being with a horse daily. I’m suggesting that no one who loves horses should be stopped from being in the company of horses.

Thank you Yvonne for posting this video. The horse behavior when former leaders are reintroduced to the herd. Also how rotation of pasture to new food helps to calm down the herd. It works the same way when adding chickens to a flock. When all the animals are busy eating new food, then there are less injuries from challenges to leadership. 🥰

It is just like when you take one of your cats to the vet, and when you bring him home the other cats hiss at him. They come home with all kings of foreign smells on them, for one thing, and they sometimes have to acclimate back into the group. I am sure this behavior would have lasted several days if the horses didn't already know each other. But introduce a distraction, in this case new grass, and all calm down.

Herd behaviour is so beautiful to watch. Also, it is very nice that you have enough room for them to sort it out. I think most problems/injuries happen when new horses are introduced in more confined spaces. The pecking order needs space to let each one maneuver without being forced to hurt each other.
