I experience awe quite a bit. Whenever I look up at the night sky, and I think about the vastness or just looking at Jupiter and thinking of how massive it really is, and how strange its core must be. Whenever I drive anywhere and pass Lake Superior, it makes me think of the true scale of it, its depth, its breadth, and how magnificent it really is. When I look at my daughter. When I watch my kitten growing and learning and hunting without ever being taught. When I watch my older cats accept him to an extent that you would expect only from a mother (especially when it's my male cat taking care of him). Awe is everywhere, you just have to know how to see it.

I think my awe-o-meter is broken. Each year, my friends and I hike up Mt Washington, but while they're all "Wow, look at that view!" I'm like "Yup, that's Earth. As expected.". What I like from the trip is the feeling of the breeze, the ice cold mountain well water, relaxing on a patch of grass in the sun, hanging with friends, and the sense of accomplishment of reaching the peak. It just feels nice. Seeing stuff doesn't make me feel anything.

Honestly I don't get out a whole lot (because I'm a depressing nerd) but often a mix of auditory and sentimental experiences can make me feel awe. Like beautiful music combined with genuine altruism or empathy. It makes me feel like life is a lot more than the rat race of work and stress and greed. Like living is more than just survival.

The last awesome experience I had was one that I took a picture of. I was up in Hammerfest for work, right before the darktime where the sun doesn't go up at all. The sun instead skims across the horizon. It gave the sky a dark red color, and the shades of the mountains in front of the sun gave a bright red on black contrast that was increadible.

My latest awe-filled moments happened: at an Anathema concert, and seeing 'Santa Maria del Fiore', the Dome in Florence... ('fiore' means flower in italian, but in romanian, 'fior' means both a shiver and also an 'awe' feeling...). Seeing pictures of it... it don't mean nothin'. Being there... it's just... Alien. Huge. Glorious. Divine.

The thumbnail for this video was really weird. The camera is looking at the treetops (meaning it's pointed vertically), and yet the woman is standing perpendicular to the camera. That means that she is actually floating above it with her head pointing downwards. I know it's green screen, but it was so weird and unnatural that I just stared at it for 3 minutes trying to figure out what was going on. :D

I believe awe is best described by the overview effect; It's only when these astronauts gaze upon the Earth that they truly understand how we are all in this together, surviving on a giant rock, orbiting a G2-star... But mountains, or rather being on top of a mountain with a great view is very awe-inspiring to me. I think it goes back to the curiosity of early humans wanting to know "what's over that hill". side note: everything is not awesome.

The last time I experienced 'awe' was a week ago when my family and I were on a road trip in Ireland. We were heading to a small but beautiful coastal town on the west coast called Dingle but in order to get there you had to drive up an extremely narrow two way traffic road called Connor's Pass which had the steep cliff of a mountain on one side and a thin brick wall maybe 3 feet tall on the other separating your car from an even steeper rocky mountain side. After being backed up and barely missing the cliff sides on the way over we finally made it to the top of the mountain where we got out of the car to take a break. The weather outside was cloudy all over and the air was very humid and a bit cold but the view was absolutely spectacular. The mountain was both grassy and rocky and was dotted with rams and sheep which was a vista itself but from this point we could see the town of Dingle which was the only place in the entire view that had an opening in clouds which lit up the towns coloured buildings and harbour surrounded by the ocean and grassy fields leading down from the mountain. I spent about 15 minutes just sitting on the rocks on the grassy peak admiring the beautiful sight surrounding and ahead of me after one of the scariest and stressful drives I have ever been on. Look up Connor's Pass and Dingle to see what I am writing about.

If what makes us feel small makes us in some way more helpful, then why didn't most of the people who were looking up at the buildings for a full minute not help out the researcher who dropped their pens? Was is because the people tested as the experimental group weren't as awestruck by the skyscrapers? Coming from a small town, I guess it would be different.

Honestly I don't think I've ever really experienced awe. I'm from the UP of Michigan. I grew up in nature and have lived in the forest, played in water falls, seen bears and other wildlife up close and personal, watched northern lights pass by in great sheets hanging in the sky, experienced meteor showers and very full views of the stars at night. I think because it's always been there for me it doesn't inspire awe. Maybe I had just a touch when I was in Vegas or Chicago from the size of the city and buildings but not really. I just don't really care I guess. Also I've had depression most of my life so there's that.

I agree that feeling small is part of it, but I think the evolutionary root is different. When we feel awe of a PERSON, we feel overpowered by them. Think of watching a great boxer string endless crushing blows together, or a musician seemingly defying physics with a sweeping solo, or seeing a politician deftly weave an argument around an opponent. You feel awe - and then, admiration. People tend to experience a strong sense of bonding to those people they feel awe towards - after all, isn't it better to have someone powerful be your friend? It reinforces a social hierarchy, which leads to less in-fighting and so, on a tribal level, less injury or death as in the animal kingdom. Lastly, with awe, you always want to share it, and when you share your awe of another, there is the likelihood others still will see that awesome individual as awesome too due to social proof (see online celebrity :) ). It all factors into social cohesion and preservation of hierarchy. The depression link comes from depression's role in the sense that you have either been defeated by or cast out by someone, or the whole of, your tribe. Sharing roots with shame, It suppresses the urge to fight, makes you compliant, and from an evolutionary perspective, means you are less likely to be killed in a fight and to acquiesce to the group's attitudes. You can fit back in, even if you don't really like it. But that sucks. However, if you can feel awe over this person, and that sense of admiration or "love" again, problem solved. Its a balm for the nagging, corrosive effect of depression or anger. Like feelings of protectiveness though (why do we find a baby dolphin cuter than human babies?), our emotions can be transferred to other things, such as trees, mountains, animals and so on. It can also be abused by people who want to influence you, so its worth being aware of exactly who you are in awe of, and why :)

But when people always have to ask "Why the hell did we evolve this!?" I kind of get mad at them and ask back "Why can't you just not blame evolution and natural selection for everything?". If all our ideas boil down to chemical reactions in our heads, then words like pleasure, pain, joy or sorrow are simply meaningless. You would just be physical system of chemical reactions. You get a sensory input. This causes a specific chemical reaction in your brain. Your brain then causes a specific physical action. There is no room for any notions of "better" or "worse" in this system. Ideas like that only apply when there are choices to be made (free will) but chemical reactions don't make choices. And if we are just physical objects with no soul/spirit, then we are just chemical reactions. In fact, even illusions of happiness and sadness cannot emerge from a purely physical system. You would have to say that you aren't really even experiencing the illusion of pleasure or pain. Rather, they would just be meaningless words.
