Hi Josh. I have a crank no start situation on a 2004 C15 in a Kenworth. The truck was purchased from a guy who was refurbishing it so a few issues were evident as you would expect. Back to the C15. 1). The oil pressure sender plug on the LHside of the engine was plugged into the boost pressure plug?? Would that situation cays issues with the ECU? 2) have checked the ECU 70 pin plug for power/earth and found the following pins 28,29,52,53,70 all have 13.4 volts Pin 8 has 4.4 volts As per one of your earlier emails on this subject you suggested there needs to be earths on 63,65,67. 63 has no pin so no earth there as you suggested however although 65 and 67 have pins but no earth are present. When I turn the key on prior to cranking there are none of the normal lights,bells and whistles happening on the dash apart from low air light and buzzer, park brake, low oil pressure light. My understanding is it should have heck and stop engine lights as well as it should go through the prestart clicking etc but nothing!! Question is are all the things that are not happening when the key is turned on a result of no earth and if so can you direct me to where Thea earths go to. Help!!!!!! Great site mate. Keep it up

I’m head of service for a oilfield equipment company. We work on large frac pumps and other oilfield and construction equipment. The amount of times I’ve seen a piece of equipment brought in because it doesn’t start or has derating issues because of old batteries is very high. A lot of people don’t realize how picky electronics controlled engines are about proper voltage going to ECM and sensors. I’ve seen guys spend a full day scratching their heads about a piece of equipment that had batteries with the normal voltage but no amperage. Slap two new batteries on and voila, back in business 😂

Why mechanical diesels are superior. You’d have got a whole day from a skilled technician. AND got a whole day of work from the machine. … If it didn’t have a silly computer. I deleted the computer from my electronic diesel 14 years ago. Haven’t got so much as a fault code in over a decade 🥹

Well, I don't know how your engines start, but mine goes like this. 1, I turn the key, 2, the starter motor turns the cage, 3, the turning cage wakes up the squirrels, 4, they start running in the cage, 5, the arm with the bacon drops down in front of their noses and they run faster. Pretty smooth, huh?😂 I love your videos, Josh.

Brilliant basic overview. I have only one discrepancy. Coolant. Since about 1997 Coolant sensor can stop the engine run/start. Mine is turned to Engine Warn Light only. Currently driving a Cat 3126 in an FL-70. I have a running 1993 pre-computer 140HP/turbo Int DT466. Cab and chassis have many issues but that engine still runs like a top. Field rebuildable ( I have 3 times ). The only real rough part is those 26 head bolts at 165FtLbs torque. Everyone be where you need to be Safe, Warm and Dry.

Dead batteries will sometimes show nominal voltage at zero, load, but the moment you load them with anything they drop below spec, so if you load them with an adequate resistor, or you short them very briefly, you will see the difference. An old sparky told me this trick when testing their voltage with a multimeter

DO NOT SHORT IT!!! Never, ever short a lead-acid starter battery; in a fraction of a second hundreds of amps will vaporize the wrench or whatever you're using, not to mention the posts, spattering you with molten metal. The extraordinary current draw can also warp the plates within. Buy a proper battery lead tester.

@@peteengard9966 I am thinking a 2-4 cylinder based off of the C15 wet liner engine. Not sure what cat has in similar or shared architecture. For example Chrysler used a V8 based engine and made 6 cylinders out of them sharing a lot of components (of course not the block). Other manufacturers do the same (cummins for example).

@adeptape Aside from more power and fuel efficiency, do electronic engines offer any actual benefits over their mechanical predecessors? Seems like the electronics make everything so much more complicated. Would be interesting to compare power gains and fuel efficiency versus reliability and simplicity in design.

Bit pedantic - but when you were talking about the compression generating heat you said it concentrated the heat in the air - which is not right. The heat energy comes primarily from the work done by the piston, where it is converted into heat - plus the increased kinetics in the gas from the compression. You may have been thinking of the idea that it is nearly adiabatic compression?

They've been considering going to 48 volt systems for decades. When that rolls out all your accessories will be electric. Even the water pump. This goes way back to the 70s oil crisis. Talks from engine manufacturers trying to squeeze every ounce of fuel mileage. If the engine didn't have to power the air compressor, it would save a butt load of fuel.

@ Yes the fan can take 30 or 40 horsepower to drive but even an electric fan takes power. That’s where a Horton fan clutch comes in, the fan only drives when it is needed. Have you ever tried to turn an alternator when the magnets are energised? A truck alternator sucks a lot of power too.
@peteengard9966
@peteengard9966 2 күн бұрын
@@jefftheaussie2225 fan clutches have been around since the 50s . Horton is just one manufacturer. Kaiser was another popular clutch. They figured that the alternator was driven anyway. Why not put the fan, power steering pump, A/C compressor and air compressor on separate electric motors would save more power for propulsion. I've worked on mining equipment that had the alternator gear driven from the engine with everything else either hydraulic driven or electric motor driven.

Interesting that the injector is basically like the original cam driven plunger types on very old stationary diesels but instead of a ramp tied to centrifugal weights it’s controlled by the ECM instead. Shame all the modern emissions make simple systems like that go extinct.
