Also you can just use FF body and get similar equivalent light with more Mpix on a subject and no aberrations. To me what is really interesting is to try FF glass without speedboost (just an empty adapter) on MFT to get ultimate reach. I tried my sigma 60-600 on my GH6 and the reach is INSANE. However AF is basically non-functional in video. At least on a Viltrox EF-M1 speedbooster.

I had a good experience with the Canon R7 and 800mm f11 lens but I much prefer the original G9 to the feel of the R7. I checked with B&H to see if they knew of a R-lens-series adapter-to-Lumix (not speed booster) but was told no such things exists:) I've been getting surprisingly good results with the 2x digital converter in the G9 menu so I guess I'll stick with that. I would like to see Lumix take it a step further with the iZoom digital doubler they use in their FZ1000 series camera. Results with that menu item are outstanding.

To confirm, if you were going to use the Sigma on a Lumix G5 Body, I would need to speed booster, and the TC-1401 teleconverter to Canon to make it work? If that's correct would it be better to buy a speed booster that bypasses the need for the TC-1401 converter. Thank you in advance.

Wow, I was hoping you'd get 1200mm reach as it's a FF on a MFT with the 2x crop, can you buy a converter that still gives you some extra reach maybe to 900/1000 without compromising on image quality and light? I have the 100 - 400 Panasonic Leica lens, would this be worth trading in and spending the money to get? Or can you mount a TC between the lens & speed booster?
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 3 жыл бұрын
That's a loaded question haha. I think it would be worth it because when you get 600mm (300mm mft) with a 4.0 aperture on a sharper lens, I would personally rather have that then the 6.3 800mm (400mm mft) that you get on that Panasonic Leica, and its the same price. As far as I know, you can TC between the lens and speedbooster but it slows AF even more, so it depends if that is important to you. Also, the teleconverter does slow down the light and there isn't any getting around that.
@MrPhilbautista

Don't use a TC with a speed booster. Just get a regular adapter without the glass element in it for better results. Using a TC with a speed booster just puts in so many more additional glass elements between the sensor and the lens that will definitely affect the IQ. A regular adapter doesn't have any glass elements so there's nothing between the lens and the sensor. And since you're main goal is to get the 2X crop factor, there you go. There are a lot of companies that make adapters so AF performance will vary, but Metabones do make adapters without glass elements too, so hopefully the AF of those adapters compare favorably with their speed booster sibs. p.s. When you go with regular adapters, you get the crop factor but you won't get the f/stop boost. There's no getting around that. It's one way or the other.

That's awesome, you're gonna love that upgrade! :) It's a tough decision! But personally, I'd go with the Sigma 150-600 metabones combo over the Lumix 100-400. Reason being, in MF, autofocus doesn't matter so you really are coming down to image quality in which I would argue that this combo achieves nearly as good as the lumix for a lesser price. The biggest bonus of all however is the fact that you'll get a really nice lower f-stop that you don't get with the 100-400! If you do wind up getting that combo of Sigma 150-600+metabones I'm actually selling my combo right now, it's used obviously but in pretty good shape, so if you're interested hit me up at jeremy.neipp@gmail.com and I could sell it for a lot less than you'd pay for it new :)

The image stabilization doesn't utilize dual I.S. with this setup, however, you still receive in-body or lens. As low as you can go is honestly a difference in how much you pixel-peep, but if you are judging according to your 1/40th standard, just add 2 stops to it which would be most likely the amount of image stabilization you are using, meaning you would be able to get shots as low as 1/60th in your scenario.

@@JeremyNeipp This other youtuber, let's call him Nony Torthrup to keep him anonymous, said it's generally the case because MFT cameras have a higher pixel density and full Frame lenses aren't built to resolve so highly, causing some unsharpness even without adapters. I have never really tested this thesis though. The only full Frame lenses I have are vintage Minoltas and Nikons, so I can't really compare. That said, with a lens built for a 64mp full Frame camera stuck on a 20mp mft body, this could be entirely negligible.
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 4 жыл бұрын
Jamie yea I know who you’re talking about. From my personally experience, my full frame lenses mounted to my MFT system seem to be DRASTICALLY sharper than my MFT lenses... all 3 that I have done this with. So if any sharpness is lost, it must be minimal assuming you have a good adapter. The resolution is definitely noticeably less between my G9 (MFT) and S1R (Full Frame), but the lens sharpness seems to stay the same between systems in my experience. Of course, these are my observations and I have never done any “scientific” tests on this.

Great ideas and discussion of comparisons. Do you use the Sigma lens IS, or the G9 IBIS for stabilization? Would the G9 in body stabilization alone be good enough at a 600mm equivalent?
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it! I would default towards the G9's IBIS since it's higher than the lens. In my opinion, the IBIS will be good enough but of course it will be a little worse than if it was a dual system. In all reality though, until even just 5 years ago most wildlife photographers had little if any stabilization built in and would still get great shots, so there are definitely ways around it.
@DM-ty4lr
@DM-ty4lr 3 жыл бұрын
@@JeremyNeipp The IBIS is higher rated but the IS could be nearer the better point on a long lens? So far I've been using an old Pentax DSLR IBIS and doing OK on a 400mm f5.6 with manual focus by keeping shutter speed over about 1/1000 and holding the lens carefully, and same on a Canon 7D 400mm f5.6 with neither IS or IBIS, not sure there's been a big difference. These are on old 16-18mp APS, so a MFT 20mp sensor's smaller pixels could be more sensitive to shake and need the IBIS and higher lens speed to be equivalent? After watching your videos, and since these older cameras can be noisy over 400-800ISO, I'd like to try the 400mm on a G9 to get the greater speed and IBIS and better noise, but maybe there are these small sensor tradeoffs and not as much leap over APS as it appears. Any thoughts? If not, great job bringing this possibility to attention.......

Thanks for the vids. So for all around usability, hike-ability: Do you think this is a viable option for M43? I read the comments below regarding the Leica 100-400 and I agree that this lens offer the most bang for buck.... but I still do think that portability with the Leica offers a wildcard value. Especially at the price of $900 used. That's saving nearly half the cost but are you getting twice the quality from the Sigma?
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely a hard question! Well, put it this way, I have hiked a 14 mile trail in one day with this lens and a much heavier camera and other equipment all in the bag... it was undoubtably tiring, but I did it! For a standard day out doing wildlife photography, I have never felt that it is too much too lug around. However, all that to say that I am a young man so I have a lot of energy and stamina. So for me I would definitely still rather invest into this setup than the Leica 100-400mm lens (I wish I knew that back then what I know now), but for some people like you said, that weight factor is a dealbreaker. In terms of quality though, hands down this Sigma 150-600 lens beats out that Leica 100-400 (I have used both) so if quality is a bigger concern to you I would definitely consider this one.

I think if I had FF kit I would have pulled the trigger on Sigma but I’m a pretty dedicated MFT shooter and I’m using this dip in MFT interest to get a good deal before the GH6 comes out(which is undoubtably going to be a game changer) .......what I don’t understand in all of this is why not just throw MFT mount on the Sigma? I think I am missing something. Why use a speedbooster. You might as well use it on the full frame body. The point of 4/3 to me is using smaller glass. More to the point, I am looking for something to beat the Nikon P1000 in quality. Therefore I am looking at big lenses on a multiplier like 4/3 almost offers. The only reason to use a speedbooster should be for wide angle. Surely?
@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 4 жыл бұрын
The purpose for a speed booster is that it helps open up aperture much wider and allows for a higher quality piece of glass while still allowing for future upgrades. If I would have thought about it for wildlife, when I was an MFT user, I much rather would have spent the money on the 150-600mm Sigma lens than any other more expensive MFT. When the Sigma translates down to FF on the speed booster, it has a 4.0 F-Stop and a 300mm reach, which the closest MFT lens to that is the Olympus 4.0 300mm and it costs an additional $1,300 compared to the Sigma+Speedbooster. On top of which, I would argue the Sigma is a much sharper piece of glass. Compared to the Nikon P1000, this lens with a speedbooster and an MFT camera like the G9 would blow the Nikon P1000 out of the water in image quality and sharpness. Hope that helps!

@JeremyNeipp
@JeremyNeipp 4 жыл бұрын
Most definitely, but reach does very little good if it’s poor image quality. That’s why people will pay 5 figures and up for a higher quality camera and lens that has a worse focal length that of a $500 camera. If your purpose is just to see wildlife, maybe a higher quality camera isn’t your best option, but if it’s to capture quality images it’s definitely good to move to interchangeable lens cameras. Also, you won’t find any 600 MFT lenses at the moment that are any good, the highest quality good MFT primes are all 300mm’s and there are a few 400mm zooms that are half good, but I wouldn’t highly recommend.
