No it accepted the nickel, because these machines operate on a system of weight among other parameters. Simple research shows the alloy from '42-'45 yielded a 5g planchet. Likewise, I am certain the diameter and thickness were all identical as well to match Cu-Ni planchets. All the other 90%, and 40% silver for that matter, weigh more than the modern coinage planchets.

Kenny Silva I was about to type this out and saw your post. Spot on.
@HalfDollaMakeYouHolla5 жыл бұрын
yeah I looked up the weight afterwards and saw they weigh 5g. but I have found several wartime nickels in coin stars! im guessing maybe they were really worn and under weight inorder for them to kick out I guess.......
@raymondgalbraith16775 жыл бұрын
Yes wear will get any coin rejected. Due to lack of weight. Likewise, I've seen a few post war nickels people have found that Coinstars refuse to accept on Reddit. Most were dryer damaged or had a rolled edge, in turn the thickness scanner seen a coin too thick or too thin to adhere to current US guide lines. As a result it's denied and returned. From there, there are always a slew of questions regarding error strikes. This is where I gained most of my knowledge regarding the relationships between nickels, Coinstars, and other coin ops. Hell, I've even seen wiser men spend time searching the trays on nickel slot machines for War Nickels. Lol
@nsr60ster854 жыл бұрын
Yes, the weights are similar. I found a 1946 nickel that I hoped might be one of a small handful of silvers from that year. It probably isn't--the number of known specimens may be in the single digits--but there's no easy way to tell for sure.
@13bgunbunny424 жыл бұрын
It ate the War Nickel because it weighs the same as any other Nickel. The other coins weigh differently than newer coins of the same denomination and that's why it didn't eat them.
@rileynme3975 жыл бұрын
That poor nickel got stolen by the CoinStar :(
@jim88585 жыл бұрын
It probably took the nickel cause it was only 35% silver. Try a 40% half
@JohnnyReb20005 жыл бұрын
A 40% probably would be rejected as it weighs 11.5 grams, while clad half dollars weigh 11.34.
@RCT3Crashes1002 жыл бұрын
We don't generally get silver coins in our Coinstars here in the UK, as we had long since debased our silver coins by the time decimalisation came around, but you can find a lot of foreign coins in the reject slot instead. In fact, one of the first silver coins I owned came from one - a silver 1961-D dime!

at the beginning of the video the coinstar machine said it would take 11% as a counting fee. It actually took 20% of that nickel's face value. Is there something in the fine print about this?

I thought the machines also check the coin's conductivity. Wouldn't the two types of nickels have different properties?
@JohnnyReb20004 жыл бұрын
@@jeffw1267, copper and silver are on the same column of the periodic table and have similar properties. Regular nickels are 75% copper. However, war nickels are still 56% copper in addition to the 35% silver (which is actually more conductive than copper). The difference in conductivity, however, is probably not significant enough for the machine to consistently accept or reject war nickels if it does indeed check that.

Once you find your first silver dime, you get hooked on checking the coinstar machine each time you pass it. This year I didn't find any until March 15th. Since then I have found 5- 1964 silver dimes, 1942 Mercury dime and 3 foreign silver coins. You never know what you will find. I was at a local supermarket and the manager found 3 live 22 bullets and called the police. They watch everyone who goes to the Coinstar machine now.

Pretty much expected the results you had. With those wartime nickels, there really is not enough silver content for the machine to realize it is different, as was the same with period specific vending machines.
