The '68 "riot" that Gyles is describing is one of the largest protest movements in history in terms of percentage of population mobilized, btw, something like 20% of the entire French population, not just the adults or workers but the of the entire population, came out to protest and it caused the country to completely stop and de Gaulle fled the country expecting imminent revolution.

According to Wikipedia, the act was read in Birkenhead, Cheshire in 1919, several months after they attempted to read it in Glasgow, and it was also read in Airdrie in 1971, where it wasn't repealed until 1973, but there's no citation for either event.

I am not from the UK but isn't the riot act why the police can't drag off those pr!cks from 'just stop oil' that block traffic? They basically have to wait an hour before they can forcibly clear them. Like I said, not from the UK, so that's just the info I remember from a few online articles and youtube videos about it.

I remember there was some consternation when the end of the Riot Act was announced. Apparently there were many who thought they would be murdered in their beds. When it was reported that it had not been used since 1919 this did not seem to calm things down at all. Still the thought of all those old colonels spitting out the tea and toast when they read about it in their morning paper made it all worth while.
