Honestly i just do what you do as well go with manufacturers specifications, my BMW uses LL-04 spec so i use the pennzoil Euro L 5w-30. But for my 22 year old nissan pathfinder i use the old-school trick of half a quart of ATF with a MOBIL-1 full synthetic every 3000 and adding the ATF every 2nd oil change

Chief 1 you need to calm down because you are acting like i put 5 quarts of ATF into my engine. my engine oil is 3.8 qts of mobil-1 5w-30 and 0.5 qts of ATF every other oil change. My lifters in my pathfinder has been ticking for a year and my oil changes has always been at 2500-3000 miles with mobil-1 extended high mileage. Plus my pathfinder is 22 years old and barely about to pass 185k miles. As a former engine technician at a Chevy dealer i don’t think 0.5 quarts is going to be an issue as long as the viscosity isn’t altered severly

Royal Purple really is that good. I'm an automotive engineer and I was once responsible for getting a 300hp, 6.7L diesel engine to survive when it was cranked up to 550hp. We needed to do a lot of performance tuning but the problem was we couldn't get an engine to last long enough to get any really good data. We could only get an engine to last about 7 minutes at full power before it would throw a rod. Literally the only thing I did was swap out our stock (Valvoline) mineral-based oil with Royal Purple full synthetic. With that change alone I could get the engine to last over 500hrs at full power! Once we got the tuning dialed in it was my job to make all the necessary mechanical changes to get the engine to survive on "stock" oil. Those changes included changing the piston crown geometry, injector spray angles, piston cooling chamber geography, piston cooling nozzle targeting, oil cooler construction, redoing the oil filter lines, changing to a ceramic coating on the piston top ring, adding a phosphate coating to the piston skirts, and improving engine cooling, among other things. All to get the engine to survive on stock oil when Royal Purple was good enough by itself without those changes! That stuff is crazy good!!

My two cents on Royal purple.... I run Royal Purple in my TDI diesel, that I purchased with 163000 miles on the odometer. Just from looking in the valve cover, I could see that the top end was black and had some noticeable carbon buildup on the head and between the cam lobes. The original owner had always used Castrol gtx on 3000 mile change intervals. I changed the oil just a couple days after getting the car home, switching to Royal Purple HPS, basically for its increased detergent and lubricant properties. I planned to extend my change intervals to counter the increased cost of the oil. After two changes, and sending a used oil sample in for analysis each time, I have noticed that the inside of the valve cover on my engine is now virtually spotless, along with the cam lobes. Also, the lab that analyzed my oil has said that the oil is capable of safely going over 15000 miles without any negative effects on its lubrication properties. Analysis has proven that my filter also is working well at 15000. So after doing this research on my own, I feel that Royal Purple is proving to be well worth the money. Also, the 3000 mile oil change doesn’t apply to today’s high quality oils. This is my experience... I suggest everyone use your own judgment in your situation.

I have used this oil for 15 years, and revved the heck out of my engine. The engine has 200,000 miles. Recently, the engine was being rebuilt to change internal components for higher performance. When the heads and timing chains were taken off, a 200,000 mile internals looked like the engine had no more than 120,000 miles. The engine was so clean internally that it was unbelievable what we were seeing. The cross-hatches that the engine came with from factory were still very visible after 200,000 miles. This is the level of protection Royal Purple provided while cleaning the internals of the engine.

You can buy small bottles of zinc additive, just dump one in every oil change. That's what I've done on all my older engines. Modern oil still doesn't contain the same amount of zinc as the old stuff did. Or else it would wreak havoc on modern emissions systems. (Edit) The bottles of zinc additive is only for pre 1989 engines with no catalytic converters. Keeps those flat tappet cams from self destructing. Royal purple is good stuff though!

Change the setup! Today's modern engine technology has the engine actually seated level under the hood. A core problem with 305, 327, 340, 350, 351 and 360 engine setups in the 60's and 70's were the angle at which they sat in the frame. The rear oil ports in the heads and block always clogged because they drained most of the hot oil back to the oil pan as the engine cools from sitting. That is also the reason the rear crank rod bearings, push rods, and rear engine seals sludge up. The seated angle of the engine was notorious for clogging/gumming/glazing in those ports and contacts well before 100,000 miles. Take one of those setups from earlier years and see if rp/amsoil or any high detergent synthetic solves that problem and can keep it that way...clean and cooler. There has to be a way to keep the "winter coat" sludge build-up approach off of these internal parts. engines are not setup like they are today, today its easier. Even today those are still common engines.

I had a 1988 Nissan Pickup with Z28 4 cylinder. I got it at 88,000 miles, changed the oil every 2500 miles without fail and drove it gently with a 4 speed manual trans. I used mostly penzoil, sometimes castrol and valvoline, sometimes synthetic but never exceeded the mileage. Did a valve job at about 140k when it burned an exhaust valve alright. Second valve job at 250K when i screwed up changing the timing chain, which didn't need it (the tensioner was worn to a rubber nub though) and bent a valve. I decided to do an in car overhaul because of the mileage (again, didn't need it but i only found that out after the parts were out). The timing chain, like new with no bow. Reused the pistons and the rod bearings since they were fine too. Changed the rings, since they were out (I didn't bother miking the rings but there was nothing wrong with them either, no oil eating, blowing or noise). I bought a ridge reamer but didn't need that either, there was no ridge at the top of the cylinders - at all. I honed the cylinders of course. Then put it all back together with great care, cranked it but wouldn't start!!! Instead of panicking, i thought for a minute, realized the distributor was installed backwards (shaft), fixed it, car started instantly. I drove the truck for another 50K, At almost 300K miles, and driving this truck into the ground really, it wouldn't idle so couldn't pass the GOT-DAMN SMOG... the guy looked at the smog numbers, which were just marginal for anal Caliornia smog checks, and told me to give up. Drove the truck away determined to fix it, but I got angry and revved the engine and the Got-damn distributor shaft broke...that was the end. I sold the truck to a pick a part. The guy driving the tow truck told me i ought to keep it! Told him I couldn't deal with it anymore and I already had a 2002 Camry to drive so, it really was the end. The yearly smog PITA was what killed this truck, NOT wear and tear.

Ive used a lot of different oils in my engine and have noticed some things. Castrol/ store brands are garbage for tight tolerance, highly tuned engines. My engine started running rough after about 3k miles. On store brand full synthetic, and the Jetta 2.5 I owned set a check engine light on Castrol full synthetic, which Volkswagen recommended. Mobil 1 and pennzoil platinum are both good and last the duration of the olm without rough running, and amzoil has the best noack volitility for direct injected engines to prevent carbon buildup and lasts the olm dostance. Royal purple may be good at cleaning out engines (mine was new when I tried it), but it doesn't last but 4 or 5k miles.

So full synthetic oils have detergents in them. This will break down this sludge and oil deposits. It isn't a good thing if you have a ton of milage and its a known fact that highmilage oils have all detergents removed to prevent the break up of the sludge so it doesn't plug sensors and oil galleys so please keep this in mind and be careful

I worked at advance next to shells testing facility. The guy who ran everything bought all his testing oils from my store. Theyre all good but have major differences. Qstate hands down best detergent. Synthetics are amazing oroblem os the zinc builds sludge after 3k. So people using synthetics past 3k negates benefits. Oil doesnt break down but dont gover 3k for optimal performance. Qstate hands down choice to run for cleaning up a neglected motor. Amsoil for wet clutches changed my bike dramatically.

Side by side can't really tell the difference. Like another says, do a used oil analysis it will give you the best results. Clean oil, filled to the proper specs will always give you the best results.

Royal Purple kept my VW engine alive despite it being over a quart low due to a broken dipstick tube. If you're just taking possession of an older car or you want to keep your freshly rebuilt engine in like-new condition for as long as possible, I wouldn't recommend anything else. Would it be worth the significant premium for a standard road car? Probably not. Full synthetic oils are fine for most engines and even conventional oils will work just fine for low-power naturally aspirated engines. But if you really want the best, Royal Purple is my recommendation. The challenge for most people is that there are essentially zero chains of shops that will offer to use Royal Purple for your oil change, so you'll have to do it yourself or find a shop with an attached store that you can buy it from and have them use it for the oil change. So, is it worth it? Maybe. Depends on how hard a life you're engine has had or will have. For turbo engines making a lot of power for their displacement? Yes. For Rotary engines? No. For high-compression naturally aspirated engines? Yes. For ultra-high-mileage engines? Yes. For a leased runabout? No. It's entirely up to you as the end user, though, and if it's worth your time and money to find a way to get it in your car.

Hey Tenza Motorsports...Have you ever tried using VP? It's a gas treatment that once you put it in your tank and then fill up? It cleans for about 5,000 miles. A friend of mine turned me on to this stuff. He and his dad are long time dragster motor builders, and they use the stuff on their motors. I've also heard good things about this VP stuff when I researched the manufacturer of this product. Ever hear of the Englishtown Raceway Park, New Jersey back in the day? I was an avid visitor all the time. Anyway I'd like your feedback if you will. I've used a bottle of the stuff twice so far. I do feel the difference in the performance of my car. 2004 Nissan Maxima 3.5 motor....Excellent engine. And well taken care of. Thanks in advance for your info.

Back in 1986, the inventer and owner of Royal Purple had a 1986 Toyota HiLux Pickup Truck and he experimented with the oil and never changed the oil because it was synthetic oil. The only thing he did was change the oil filter every 5-10,000 miles and topped off the oil level. Just be careful having it in your engine in tempurtures 30 degrees and lower. The oil thickens up. Below 0 degrees it will turn close to molasses. Well use too. The oil has changed over the years and has improved for winter weather. I had a 2013 Dodge Dart and the Manufacturer says to use Pennzoil. I used Pennzoil in my 1988 Toyota P/U and it ran like it was going to seize up! My Dart did too!
