A quick update on how the seedlings are doing since starting this project. So far it's been less a test about light and more a lesson on growing.
It’s been a couple weeks since we last looked at the seedlings. Let’s see if they’re still alive!
2 weeks ago we moved our seedlings to individual pots and placed 6 under a HLG65 5000k 6 under an HLG 4000k 6 under two HOt5 6400K. Each shelf is relatively enclosed and each was sitting on its own heat mat.
I’ve noticed some problems right away.
1. The top two shelves the plants were looking more yellow
2. They had some signs of fungal disease on the leaves
3. There is curling on the edges of the leaves
Compare these plants with the ones on the bottom rack. And you’ll see less fungal issues and although not as dense growth there are greener leaves and less stressed looking plants.
Now because all these plants are on the same feed program I’ve narrowed it down to a couple things. These are neither the fault of the nutrients or the lights. They are grower error.
The plants on the upper two racks were getting too hot and too humid. This caused fungal issues and stressed out these plants. Heat would rise from the lower racks making it much hotter at the upper leaves. Combine hot and humid with brighter lights and you’re just asking for you plants to be stressed.
I removed the humidity domes off the plants, sprayed them with a light sulfur spray to help with the fungal issues. I turned off the heat mats and added a small fan for circulation.
I’m hoping these plants aren’t beyond repair, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some casualties.
If you guys have any suggestions if there’s anything else I can do for these plants let me know in the comments below.
