I have been running the cometic mls on my 3L M50 BMW at 26 lb of boost for years. Using the eaton 2.3L supercharger. It's mainly a track car so it sees prolonged abuse. Never had an issue with head sealing. The key is proper head and deck surface. Head studs help.

I have personally ran 25lbs of boost on a composite gasket and know of people that have ran 40lbs. This was and is still being done on the 4g63. If I was more knowledgeable regarding tuning I would have pushed harder. Downside is any detonation will blow the gasket. Currently running a MLS gasket.

Absolutely what i was thinking. Subaru got the worst design as far as the water flow goes. The water stays at the top, causing the old antifreeze to eat away at the gasket. Change antifreeze and use the right antifreeze called for the Subi

Hi A composite or MLS based material gaskets will isolate heat. But if you use a copper gasket its soft and will crush and seal very well under higher boost and heating conditions but it does somtimes require additional cooling to the cylinder head with pvc cooler air recirculation/catch can filter, stronger rad fans, and lowering engine bay temps by wrapping exhaust and installing cold air intake
@motoiq3 ай бұрын
I have never gotten a copper gasket to long term seal the water jacket. I have tried coating them with everything known to man and they always eventually weep. They seal compression fine, just not the water after many heat cycles. I consider them to be drag race or short term use only.
@DeVoNmotorsports3 ай бұрын
@@motoiq it should be preventable? why does it weep, corrosion? use better coolant, heat expansion and contraction, use better thermostat even 2 temp sensors with electronic valve, and electric pump to run after shut down, maybe a stainless fire ring around the area like the kind that is a c shape and folds around the edge in a groove, if your heat cycles are overheating the engine that's why it would fail and only if the coolant is overheating from heat soaking, there is coolant you can get that is waterless and inert, maybe retorquing the head would help after heat cycles, copper compression fittings work good and are used for many industrial applications, they have a good yield strength to tensile strength usage without degradation to compression over time so my guess would be oxidization

That has nothing to do with copper head gaskets.

@@motoiq in all fairness the only time I needed to was the compound bike and its air oil cooled 😂 but I did put one on my neon and it has yet to weep although it's a block and head I machined as well as I could and we annealed the crap out of it. Probably helps that I didn't want to chance it and put a little Indian head around the coolant passages lol and a iron closed deck block. Now on my Volvo I go s60r MLS but we all know how hard keeping a head gasket on one of those t5s can be especially over 500hp even with pd150 diesel head bolts and devcon filled deck 😂. Hell long ago I think I was 16 I had a turbo Honda d16 civic and eh well I was broken and I had cardboard hahaha that lived at 250hp until I sold the car no fire rings or anything either.. looking back that was questionable to say the least but it did work well for the 2 yrs I had it.
