Props for thinking about the impact of beef on the environment, but there is only a small amount of people eating grass fed cows. The main problem I see with it is there is simply not enough land for cows to all be grass fed with the amount of meat people eat and that's with the current population.
@HillbillyYEEHAA
@HillbillyYEEHAA 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, that's not strictly true. You can raise animals on almost any grasslands. You can't say the same for plant growing. In fact, animals feed the soil. All you need to do, is partition the grass and move them periodically around those sections. Also, 2 or 3 people could live off ONE cow for a year. You are overestimating how much meat people are eating. Meat consumption is actually way down because its been demonised
@tomalol9772
@tomalol9772 2 жыл бұрын
@@HillbillyYEEHAA I'll have to look into how cows feed the soil and the offset that has on the environment. Most people don't eat whole animal though and I'm sure I've seen meat consumption still on the rise on a whole and especially in developing countries. Isn't the amount of methane gas cows produce also a problem?
@J.e.a.n.
@J.e.a.n. 2 жыл бұрын
@@HillbillyYEEHAA but the land that is currently used to grow plants for feeding the animals is not calculatet in. If we used that space for plants for human consumption and a bit of grass feeding it would have an tremendous positiv effect on the environment. Not saying stop the meat. Just saying much less and use crop land more direct!
@TheDavveponken
@TheDavveponken 2 жыл бұрын
@@tomalol9772 It is. And that type of animal farming is sadly enough not very common (nor is it feasible economically - neither for the producer or the consumer). Meat with just about any plate of food is still the norm so I don't believe meat consumption is way down at all. It's possibly less than it was before per capita but it's still more than likely higher in total due to meat being available to more people world wide and a growing population.

Would love to hear what you suggest.

Really think you should do more research about the environmental impacts of red meat. Transport of animals only contributes to about 5% of their emissions, the vast majority is in the raising of livestock - the food they eat, water they drink, and land usage.

When it comes to meat production the transportation costs make up a small proportion of total impact. A study showed that New Zealand lamb consumed in London has less greenhouse gas emissions then Welsh lamb! Just because it's local doesn't necessarily mean it's better.

"Very low certainty of the evidence means that the likelihood is very high that the effect will be different enough from what the research found that it might affect a decision." Isn't the whole "low- to very low-certainty evidence" saying that the research is clearly not to be taken as final proof. It's important to call out that the scientific language can be very confusing for non-scientific people. This is why recommending people to do their own research comes with some caveats. Having said that, meat tastes gooood!

The thing about meat being bad for the environment is mainly due to their emissions (larger meat animals' gas are responsible for a vast amount of the green house emissions) but also due to the fact that they are more often than not feed with foodstuff coming from other parts of the world (soy for instance). Eating an avocado from Argentina would actually probably be better than eating meat (although eating something else would of course be preferable from an environmental point of view). I'm not saying you need to abstain from meat altogether, but eating about three meals a week or so would probably suffice in order to get a balanced diet.

Is butter on that diagram of macro and micro nutrients? Regarding meats, I haven't done any research, but I think processed meats, charred meats, and high red meat consumption is linked to cancer. As a daily meat eater, its consumption is just ingrained into our daily lives. You have to have a meat, veggie and starch at each meal. I've tried vegetarian days, and some of the vegetarian processed foods are pretty good, but most are high on sodium.

I respect the research but I think it's done with a bit of a biased blind eye. Not everything is beeing repressntet in every study. For example the amount of crop land that is used for just feeding animals for years instead of directly feeding humans. Very unefficient. I know u said local gras fed animals and you are only talking for yourself but a lot of people a goimg to copy you with just some red meat. Gotta explain very carfully when opening a topic like that in front of a big audience imo. Not saying ban all meat tho ;)

I disagree with your opinion on environmental impacts of beef but I enjoy the series anyway. It makes more sense to compare beef eating to what someone might actually replace it with (other meats, beans, pulses, meat substitutes etc) than flown in avocados. Having said that i'm not pro vegan either. I found replacing beef with chicken/fish/pork/occasional quorn to be a good compromise between nutrition and environmental impact
@valeriev1876
@valeriev1876 2 жыл бұрын
yep I’m vegetarian and have done a lot of research on similar topics, beef has a much larger carbon footprint than chicken so just making that switch helps if ppl don’t want to cut out meat, for me it also has some spiritual connotation which I understand not everyone shares, and yes eating local is soooo imp bc of transportation emissions etcetc, it’s also important to look at the breadth of literature as opposed to a handful of studies

Thanks Tom, for sharing your opinion on red meat and the environmental impact of meat. It's really important to consider different point of views and staying a bit humble about your own opinion. I feel like this subject is often handled on a way to emotional and moral level, that stops people from actually considering the facts, leading to a lot of binary thinking. Here is a video on this subject by c that I find really interesting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXiqXnRuZbmfa8k And on another note: It looked like you were cooking with butter instead of vegetable oil. I've recently been looking more into this subject, considering possible alternatives after I watched the video by "What I've Learned" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qILQoomMorJ1ac0). My question is: I heard that butter isn't always the best alternative, due to trans fats forming when heating too high. I'd be interested in your opinion on this subject. Cooking with butter and cooking oils in general. Thanks for the video! Great as always.

Hey Phil. While Tom doesn't really make a claim about the environmental impact of meat (which is great), that channel does. And even though it provides a bit of evidence, the channel constantly fails to give an unbiased approach to the matter. Most of his nutrition videos are simply bad takes and a constant lack of evidence. Even though in this particular topic the consensus isn't very strong, the amount of evidence supporting the claim that meat is worse for the environment than a plant-based diet is higher. Also, there's an overwhelming amount of evidence supporting the fact that vegetable oils, regardless of the type of fat, are healthier than butter or coconut oil. The way these are made or funding issues is a fallacy as it provides no information on the health outcomes of a person. Vegetable oils have many good effects on blood lipids and DO NOT increase inflammation or become oxidized within the bloodstream. So you stop reading or watching videos that provide misinformation, let me help you -Ketogenic diets and intermittent fasting contribute to fat loss through caloric restriction, just like any other diet. There's no special effects involved. Nor do they increase lifespan as there's no evidence for that claim. -Carnivore diets are unhealthier than a diet that follows nutrition guidelines. -Vegetable oils are healthier than butter or coconut oil.
@bd11777
@bd11777 2 жыл бұрын
Oxford university did a study which said the single biggest thing an individual can do to help the environment is switch to a vegan diet. I've seen other studies suggest slightly different but going vegan is still top 3, using an electric car and switching to a green pension being the others. Ultimately there's lot of factors that impact the environment but the general consensus that our food production system is very inefficient and its low hanging fruit for many people wanting to reducing their climate impact. Not everyone can afford an electric car or use public or manual modes of transport to earn a living.
