There is a line between sharing for awareness and oversharing and I agree that she used to cross it too often. I just watch her more recent videos and think about those old depression videos as a log of what she is overcoming

I have an ACE stoma and have the opposite problem to you- if I have too many carbs and too little veg in a week, or don’t have one coffee a day, I can’t get my catheter into the stoma because the stool is too hard or has build up too much.

@@carysisamelt1695 idk how I'd classify it tbh, although I think the official term is learning-developmental disorder? I'm having trouble getting diagnosed currently but I'm hoping my new psychiatrist will be better! I agree with you on that, although I think other things are also underrepresented (I'm partially deaf and I was an adult before I saw any representation of that in the media and I cried like a baby). I would recommend 'the good doctor ' as it portrays the autistic main as someone with actual feelings!

I'm a nursing assistant in elderly care, so I see stomas, probably a fair bit more than the average person, but still not that often that we really have training in it or anything (the first time I saw one, luckily, the patient was able to show me what to do and how to help her empty it, but there's still a lot I don't know, but its been really interesting, watching your videos and hearing your experiences both on a general and professional level... because even with having to be hands on at time, you don't get that much information when doing general medical care in a "non medically qualified" role. Your videos help me to take care of my patients better. Thank you.

This is so important! When my grandad had a stoma, we couldn't find a single nurse in Buenos Aires who knew at least something about stomas or how to properly change the bag... we went through a lot, but when we found someone who actually knew what she was doing, we thought she was an angel. We loved her. With all the problems we had daily (he had a stoma done at age 85 because of colon cancer... now he's doing amazing with no stoma), it was nice having someone we could rely on. So anyway, on behalf of your patients (and their families) thank you for caring about this! You make a huge difference on people's lives :)

It was difficult after surgery because you don’t know what’s going on or what your new normal will be and your sense of humor and positivity were invaluable. As to pooing habits, I can totally relate. Cilantro comes out the same way it goes in. Also tacos have a strange smell, like good smelling food in your poo. It sends such strange messages to my brain of repulsion and “oh That smells like something good to eat.” Thanks for your bravery.

Megan. Sounds like you have a varied and rich diet. So keep up the good work. Although I don't have a stoma as yet, my Crohn's is active in my upper illeum with strictures. So I have a low residue diet fairly similar to Hannah's to avoid blockages with the strictures. As stuff still goes all the way down, shellfish, hydration and sweetcorn are not a problem. But I am sick as a parrot if I eat food with Indian Spices. Even a single samosa can lay me low for a week. 😭 On the plus side, it means I can smugly refuse broccoli under Doctors Orders. Every cloud has a silver lining. :-)

I get annoyed when people tell me I should instead try a 'slow carb' diet, I've got type one diabetes (adult diagnosis) and try and eat low carb. I do eat carbs but I try and make them worth it for when I'm having them. I also get annoyed when people tell me I need to do strict keto, which I would literally die from hypoglycemia the first time I'd workout. Granted, all of that said, I had low carb ice cream for breakfast because I'm an adult...

Also, I should add that I have issues with salt/electrolytes and staying hydrated, I get the science in sport 'hydro tablets' and find that helps me a lot. But I have to pay attention to my carbs, so it's a lot easier than eating crisps and then controlling my blood sugar

I also have type 1 diabetes (dx at 15) and tbh people assuming what you're allowed/not allowed to eat is so annoying. Yes, I can eat this 50g slice of chocolate cake. If I inject, control and want to! And if there is something high carb that I don't like the taste of, I will not want to have the extra hassle.

I have a stoma, I got Benedict in February 2019 because of crohn’s. His full name is Benedict Stomabag 😂 I can pretty much eat most foods now, I eat sweetcorn in a salad and no issues so far 🤞 but I've not tried corn on the cob. Benedict does not like BBQ food, as in any food cooked on a BBQ I don't know why because if I have a burger or sausage cooked normally he's fine, but BBQ food makes me feel the same as when you eat mussels. I love watching all of your videos but your stoma videos really helped me and my family understand what was going to happen and what to expect so thank you so much for them they have been a god send 😊😊 x

Thanks so much Sarah, I'm so glad she's helped you too! I hope you're adjusting and doing well 😊 I have ups and downs, usually depending on anxiety levels, but having representation and normalisation of these things helps so much to show we're not alone and that we can move forward and live with our illnesses etc. not wait to be "better" or "normal" - we ARE normal and can live our best lives right now! 💚 Terri I absolutely agree! I don't have many friends who can relate or tolerate lol but I normalise talking about bodily functions when I can! I'm tired of being ashamed of my body! It takes a lot of work to go against everything society tells us but it's so freeing to keep making that effort ✊ I've had to use humour a lot to get through living with chronic illness since childhood and often my friends would be grossed out by crude humour etc. but so long as jokes weren't at the expense of fat/disabled etc people (which they too often are) I always secretly appreciated comedy that took the power away from taboo topics.

Love how you’re bringing awareness of your condition and others to light! You’re amazing! My husband has been chronically ill now for 5 years and the doctors can’t figure out what’s wrong, so he’s been on a lot of diets. They suspected ulcerative colitis for a while but that was ruled out. We did find out he had a gluten allergy so he did get better for a couple months after getting off gluten, but then got sick again. Now we have a new lead and are preparing him for a new diet that’s supposed to help reduce the histamine levels in his body and it’s crazy! No wheat, dairy, or soy (which we already don’t do). No nuts, dried fruits, shellfish, eggs, chocolate (this one made him cry ;)), certain berries, mushrooms, pepper, no dried foods in general (including teas and herbs), and everything has to be made fresh (so no leftovers or sausages). So he can eat fresh veggies, fruits, and meats. Hopefully this works to reduce his symptoms until they figure out what’s wrong.

In answer to your question, no. Many people go through life unaware of certain convictions which only come to light when it becomes server enough to warrant medical investigation. Many I have talked to within the IBD community had no issues with food until they have had to be admitted to hospital for surgery or investigation. One of my favourite meals was half an iceberg lettuce with chicken, bacon, cheese and lashing of salad cream. Then I fell Ill which I was told might be due to Crohn's disease so now I have a stoma and have to avoid most of what I use to eat.

@@warrenevans4019 Ahh fair enough! I hate the smell of animals like dogs and cats and I find they smell really strongly to me even when other people are like 'huh really I can't smell them' and I'm also allergic to them so I've always wondered if it's my body reacting like 'hey you, this is bad!!!' But that could also just be an association thing: the smell reminds me of having allergic reactions. Bodies are interesting things that's for sure!

I actually think that could be true you know. I haven't been completely diagnosed yet but pretty much got Crohn's in May of last year and went to hospital in October. Most of the foods I was told I shouldn't eat were either things I was already intolerant to or just didn't like. I thought that was pretty fascinating.

Hi Hannah, what a great series of videos. My Mum who is now 75 has an ileostomy Stoma (she actually spent her birthday in hospital having surgery the following day). It has been really tough for her since she had lost a large amount of weight through PMP illness before her surgery. After 5 weeks in hospital she is now into her 2nd week at home and the anti sickness tablets aren't helping a great deal so we are trying different foods and also working on her walking and being a little more active. I know everyone is different but we will try a couple of the things you have mentioned here, she was treated at The Christie Hospital in Manchester who were amazing and still support us if required. Total respect for the country for donating and contributing to a foundation that helps above and beyond for people with Cancer, thanks again Hannah and i hope things are better for you :-)

I can eat lettuce, carrots, diced celery, cabbage, onions, sweet peppers, grape/roma tomatoes and radishes raw with little to no problem. My biggest issue is seeds so I stay away from large globe tomatoes, bell peppers (although cored I can handle), cucumbers and squash. Fresh stalks of celery also can be an issue due to the strings. On the fruit side, I can do apple slices, pineapple and most citrus raw/fresh.

hannah, please don't feel bad for craving the foods that are actually healthy for your specific body. your body is smart and knows what it needs and you seem to be really in tune with your needs which is a skill you can be proud of! personally i've always felt drawn to whole grain bread, vegetables and generally foods that take a longer time to digest (so no fast food, ever). turns out i have a super fast acting metabolism and this is the food i need to stay active during the day. our bodies do more than we give them credit for and (even thought this is a touchy subject) i don't think one diet is inherently better than other types of diets. it really does depend on the individual. thank you for sharing your thoughts, worries and experiences!

I have had my ileostomy for six years. I am from Florida. I have your exact diet choices as well. Grape Gatorade produces neon green output. Cereals also will produce odd colors due to food dyes and color additives. Wonderful videos. I use Holister two piece extended wear and can go 7 days per bag and wafer change. I use was rings applied to the water for better protection for the 7 days. No skin issues of leaks. The absolute one thing I would advise you to read up on and be aware of is HERNIA!!! No one really talks about the risk of getting a HERNIA near your stoma but our chances are like 70% to get one which I have. Sorry about rambling but wanted to share a little of my experience. I love visiting with you on your video channel. I do not get real grossed out. I trained in the US Army as a combat medic so dealing with the more awful parts of real life tends to be more of a common environment for me. The last time I wrote I told you I was a US Army soldier but I did not tell you that I was a member of Medical corp. That was where I started my military career, in Medicle Corp. I told you I was blinded but I did not go into a lot of detail. When I returned to the US from my military service travels around the face of the glob I got a job in the State of Colorado as a Law Enforcement Officer In the State of Colorado Department of Corrections (Prisons) I became a prison guard. It was at this point in time that I was made a target by my fellow officers and deliberatly (on purpose) blinded by my fellow officers. Up until then I was a pretty happy go lucky and very duty oriented type of person. Being a soldier is a real ... Very Real ... life style of duty, physical exercise, and more duty. Some times for multiple days and other extended periods of time, in multiple sucession. Otherwise stated as days, or weeks, or months in a row. I have had more than one oppertunity to quite literaly fall asleept on my feet from exhaustion, the only indicator that I was asleep being the immediate confusion I feel, now that I am awake once again trying to recall what I was doing before I fell asleep, trying to pick up the peices of my work and complete the task at hand. B the element of comparison it is obvious I was, for a while there, very much out of conciousness and previously asleep. A very frightening reality in a place where people are literaly trying to kill you. In as much as I miss the excitment of that time in my life I am very relived in the fact that that part of my life is over. I used to be a soldier, but I was much more than just a soldier. I was a professional driver - in or out of combat. I drove all over north America, central America, And South America. All over Asia and all over Europe. And I am not talking just the local family sedan. I am talking huge massive in size professional peices of very heavy equipment. I drove through the jungles deserts cities and rural areas all over the face of the glob. The world is a very dangerious place. People lose their lives all over the earth for simply being in the wrong place at the right time for the oppertunity to strike against you. I would like to be able to say that my situational awareness has kept me alive. But in reality it has just been dumb luck. I have spent my whole life in harms way, subject to what ever any person who wanted to do me harm was freely open to do so. I have been snake bit and poisoned. I have been lied to cheated and robed by the Federal Level American Government I have Been Lied to cheated and robed and blinded by the State level of American Government specifically the State of Colorado. All of this tends to sound very dramatic But it is only my reality. After all I could see just fine one day and three days Later I was blind for what I supose will be the rest of my life. At this point I do not have the money but when I do I will go to a specialist type of doctor to inquire as to what may be posible in terms of regaining my sight. I used to travel all over the face of the earth. now I can not even travel around the block with out help. Bige diference between you and me you fell subject to a Medicle condition that altered your life. In my case I supose that you could say that I fell subject to a medicle Condition as well that changed my life. In my case it was criminal stupidity on the part of those who were suposed to be the first responders defending the issues of justice, peace, and and the definders of induvidual liberties. As the old saying goes you can not cue stupid. Especialy on the part of the law Enforcement. Sorry, I am ranting. I will close now. Best wishes to you I hope life is good to you in the long run. Since then, it's been a lot of trial and error. I'm also vegan, and I miss raw veggies and salads, but I learned the hard way regarding fiber with numerous blockages, a hernia, and prolaspes. So, it's been tough bc I love produce and fibrous foods but can't eat them and the variety of foods I can safely handle would make most people nuts, but after 2 years, I'm finally starting to figure it out. Sure, it may be a unique way of eating, but hey, I'm missing 5 feet of organ with another organ sticking out of my abdominal muscles, so gotta do what ya gotta do! The issue with fiber post op is that until things settle into place, you're prone to intestinal blockages. Fresh celery stalks still give me problems (chopped or diced celery is fine). Seedless Rye or Pumpernickel bread doesn't case problems (caraway seeds can be problematic). Nuts (including peanuts) in moderation haven't caused me problems in years. Sodas straight from the bottle/can/machine can cause gas due to the carbonation. I find that ice cubes cuts the fizz to tolerable levels. What you can tolerate will change over time. I still don't do corn. I do eat shrimp, crab meat, salmon, gefilte fish with almost no problem (tuna gives me indigestion). Be careful with timed release medicine. They will go through you without being absorbed. I do mini sweet peppers so I see small undigested pieces. Dyes from frosting can produce interesting colors. I do beetroot on Passover and yes you'll see a distinct color. I've got 33 years of experience with no revision surgery and no blockages requiring a trip to the ER in almost 20 years. One thing to remember. If you're in the hospital for any extended stay, let your doctors and nurses to know what to expect with your stoma. I did that when I had Thyroid Cancer surgery in April so there wouldn't be issues in the OR along with the following week when I had to visit the ER due to a leaking drain from the surgery. Don't panic over a blockage. I've been through 3 that sent me to the ER and in every case, pain medication and a muscle relaxet resolved the issue in a couple of hours.

Hi Hannah, I had a ileostomy and had a stoma for 3 months. During that time, I too had problems with eating spinach, peas, beetroot, salad leaves, nuts, olives and raisins. I also could not consume any type of juice. This used to set my stoma into a frenzy, whatever the juice!!My diet was high in carbs, with lots of water and added salts. I have since had a reversal opp, and that took once again a good long while to establish what digests well or not. I might add that spinach, salad leaves, beetroot and olives still have the same effect, even after a reversal. I totally agree with you regarding the consumption of fish. Whether it’s shellfish or cod etc, the output will smell !! Desiccated coconut is def a NO NO during stoma bag and even after stoma bag. I made the mistake of eating desiccated coconut after my reversal and I had two days of horrific bloat and pain. I truly thought I had another obstruction. So it was chamomile and peppermint tea to sooth the bloat. Just wanted to say that I love watching your videos. It reminds me of my days with a stoma. Just wanted to say that digestion after the reversal opp is still tricky on occasions, and you are still learning about what your new connection can deal with. It’s a process of elimination and sometimes what you may have thought eating digests well on one day, may sometimes not on another day. I am always learning !

I have PCOS, so there are a lot of things I can't/shouldn't eat. Not that I stick to that 100% because I absolutely love food and the idea of completely cutting foods out just isn't for me🤷🏽‍♀️! I found this really interesting and informative, love your content 🙌🏼❤️

THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT THE CORN THING! OMG. I HAVE CELIACS DISEASE AND HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH CORN (and nightshades too but I'm allergic to those so....). Gah. Also, breakfast foods and "category specific" foods should not be limited to a time of day. I work nights and my dinner is technically someone else's breakfast time. Just eat whenever and enjoy it
