What I Got for Christmas + American Girl Doll Rehab / Restoration (American Girl Today JLY #5)

Let me show you what I got for Christmas, plus a bonus American Girl doll restoration! Spoiler alert: it's American Girl of Today stuff :) I got an AGOT #5 and the red vinyl jumper meet outfit!

There's someone in a FB group that collects the peeling ones, and rescues them by peeling the remaining parts, and then dyes them to match what the vinyl had been. I think for the ones that are far too gone, she saves all of the hardware and then uses them to make new vinyl ones... if I'm recalling correctly.

@@fthurman Oh that’s so cool! I’ve debated getting it me that’s long gone in terms of peeling and just reuse the hardware and make a new jumper, possibly with a different material then vinyl as I’m not confident in that type of fabric yet with sewing. Sort up cycle one. But good for that person for doing that! What a smart way to “save” these vintage AG outfits

That pristine vinyl jumper is an incredible find! I love the 90s Girl of Today dolls, and I agree, that little bit of curl at the end of their hair really is an iconic part of their style.

How lucky to get that outfit! I coveted it as a child, but my childhood doll was a GOT #17 that I got in 1995, so she came in the very first Meet outfit, and there was no way I was going to be able to get a second doll just because I liked the Meet. It's a shame that it's so difficult to find in good condition these days. As you said, it's pretty iconic 90s. Clarissa definitely would have worn it. Your #5 looked so great after you got her all cleaned up!

I love #17! (Okay let’s be honest, I love them all 😆) The original 1995 meet is one of my favorites. I have that one too! I love how many pieces it comes with. I agree, I wish the vinyl jumpers had aged better because so many people still love that look. I think if they were bent or crushed at all, they were destroyed. There are so many talented people out there, I bet there’s someone that could make a pretty good replica! Thanks so much for the kind words!

Sir i think you have my old red AG jumper lol. I say that bc the right button was always a little wonky, and never lay flat, like the left. It always bothered me as a kid. I gave away a bunch of my old AG stuff back in 2018ish to a second chance store in Nebraska, and that outfit was in the lot. Now that I have daughters of my own pulling me back into the world of AG again I kinda kick myself at times for donating all of my childhood AG clothes lol. Now that i know how valuable they are. Especially bc when i donated that outfit, it still looked brand new. I swear that is my old dress though, all from the right button. I was gifted my doll during Christmas of 1999. She had sandy blonde hair and big brown eyes. I wish i remembered her number. She had the red dress, black turtleneck and the cute lil doc martens. I also got the husky with the sled set as well, which i still have to this day. If that is my old outfit I'm so glad someone else got it for Christmas again, and cherish's it as much as I did back that Christmas day in 1999. 😊

When I go on Ebay. I like to get clothes for $30 or less. Because, I like the retired items. Half of them, I buy new in box items. Though I am not planning on selling anything, I find that the things I buy goes up in value. I like to dress my dolls. So, I don’t keep anything in the boxes and look through unboxed items on EBay.

She’s definitely late 90’s since that meet outfit was introduced in 1998 and wasn’t replaced until 2000.

I wish doll companies would stop using that vinyl material 😭😭It never ages well on any doll. I've heard puffy paint works pretty well at mending it, but I have yet to try it out. Either way, amazing find! I remember that outfit being in the first catalogue I ever saw as a kid and I thought it was really cool.

Good tip about the puffy paint! I’m gonna guard this outfit with my life, but it’s good to know there might be some options to fix it. It’s such a shame when things don’t age well. I guess it makes it fun to hunt down, but fewer people get to enjoy it unfortunately. I’d love to find someone that could make good replicas of this outfit!

Keep an eye on eBay and Mercari! Sometimes you can find them for like $40. I wasn’t that lucky with this girl, but if you’re patient you can find great deals on them!

I have that same doll but she is from the early 00s and looks a little different than the one you showed. I definitely can not squeeze her face like that at all. I also have that jumper outfit but without the red jumper part because mine cracked so bad that I had to throw it away.

Loved Clarissa explains it all, and that is definitely in her wheelhouse of style, especially with the boots, tights and hat! I'm learning restoration, so its always beneficial to see others process. Do you ever repaint their faces to replace lost lip or cheek color, or always leave as is?

I’ve only ever re-blushed cheeks and painted teeth. Eyebrows are usually never an issue. At some point I’ll restore lips when a project arises, but lips are probably the hardest thing to make look right!

I gasped when I saw how fantastic that jumper looks! I have the same outfit and oof, yeah. I'm thinking about seeing if it's possible to repair it or at least make it look nicer. And as far as her being a later doll, that definitely makes sense: she looks like my JLY 3 I've had since childhood! Also for the "bald spots" in her wig... the older JLY's are just like that unfortunately ^^; It's not usually an issue unless you're putting their hair in pigtails but still.

There are many talented people that can sew doll clothes. I bet if you found an identical fabric, the fabric could be replaced while using all the same original snaps and zips!
