I think you've got the balance just right. A few good quality thoughtful gifts for your kids make christmas magical and go towards making sure they have toys to play with and the things they need throughout the year without making them entitled or taking the focus of christmas off less superficial things like appreciating happiness, health, family and food.

We buy four gifts for each family member at Christmas (a "want", a "need", something to wear, and something to read). The "something to wear" is a new set of pajamas that we put under the tree ahead of time and open after church Christmas Eve so we can wear to bed that night. Then on Christmas Day there are "3" gifts per person left. I put the numbers in quotes because sometimes each gift is more than one thing put together as one of the categories. For example, my 3 year old is getting 3 new books as her "read" gift or her "want" is a doll and also a few accessories for the new doll that will all count as one gift in my books!

+Katie Tolson we do the same thing!! I did a video last Christmas season about handling minimalism and Christmas/birthdays. We just haven’t done it during Christmas yet, only birthdays. Our kids are so young, they don’t care how many gifts they get from us. Their grandparents buy so much, this is actually the first Christmas they’re getting more than one gift from us I think haha.

That's great! I think you picked out perfect gifts! And I agree, young kids don't see numbers at all. My 3 year old has a wooden washer/dryer and ironing board set that she loves to "wash" her baby doll clothes in while I do laundry.

Katie Tolson I am actually doing this with my 13 and 14 yr old teen girls...we moved this summer and I am paying higher rent and then ex hubby decided to stop paying child support so I told girls we won't have much for Christmas and they said that's fine mom...my 13 yr old just wanted new sharpies cause she draws and my 14 yr old just wanted a new notebook and new pens and pencils because she writes her own books...that was all they wanted

I love how minimal this is, and I love wooden toys too! My little girl Evie will be 18 months at Christmas, and we've bought her two books, a set of 2 piece farm animal puzzles, a little threading activity (the lace and some wooden pieces) and a wooden kitchen with some accessories and wooden food go to with it. My kids are getting 25 books a piece everyday in December they get a book to open up and then on Christmas they get the last one and we read the books we open it's fun and we have been doing this for 2 years this will be our 3rd year doing it it's fun like I said and they get books they like or books to learn :) and they are also getting close from my mom and dad and then there's getting a leap frog book reader or something like that and something else I forget what but yea this year I told my mom no toys but for my daughter she's getting one toy to replace a toy someone took from her it's a little people's house and then my mom found something that normally cost 50 bucks at goodwill it's the spirit ride free horse set that eats carrots and talks with the doll she's loves that show on Netflix

They have worked great for us (we had an early Christmas so they have been using them for a bit now)! They are only leak proof when closed though. We have a couple of the kids contigo water bottles! They were amazing at first, but after several months of use they started leaking if you didn’t continually push the straw in. My main reason for getting the Bubba though was cause it keeps things cold for a long time! 🙂 I just right away started telling the girls to close them when done and keep them upright. Occasionally they forget, but most of the time they now make sure to close it!

Do you have a specific video on why you prefer wooden toys? Also in one video I heard you mention something about limiting play time with dolls or maybe i misunderstood. I am curious and wanted to know more about that. I love your videos and adore your family! You and your husband are great role models. I have one child right now and she has cystic fibrosis, she is only 21 months old. I don’t know how you do it with two!

+Autumn Keefhaver it was just limiting specific character play (with characters that have specific names like Disney characters, exc). Not dolls in general :) I talked about it in the wooden toys for kids. It just puts a cap on their imagination. Rev also did a lot of work with her developmental therapists because she was VERY rigid in her play at first. She wouldn’t mix toys and wouldn’t let toys do anything other than what they first did. So I tend to stay away even more from them to keep encouraging her imagination! I haven’t done a whole video on why we have mainly wooden toys. It’s just the quality last longer and they tend to be more open ended toys (which helps with learning deep play). We don’t own any toys that take batteries except a little kids play flashlight which is in the car. And a lot of times, staying away from electronic toys means they are probably wooden too! We are not totally against plastic...I just don’t like the way plastic toys are made now. They’re so much cheaper from when we were kids. Our girls have a little tikes 90’s dollhouse in Rev’s room and that thing is a beast! It can handle a ton of wear, cause plastic toys were made sturdier back then.

If you scroll through my videos there is one called "infant birthdays and Christmas gifts" that is what rev got for her 1st Christmas and her b-day (her birthday is January 1st). I don’t know why you’re getting so much hate! Not everyone wants to spoil their children just because it’s Christmas. I do buy my kids quit a bit for Christmas, but they do not get toys through out the year. But I try to explain to them that Christmas isn’t about the gifts it’s about Jesus and family and love! And that some children are not as fortunate as they are, and many children don’t get any gifts! I raise my children to appreciate whatever they get. This Christmas my 3 year old son will be getting the BBQ play set from Melissa and Doug, Magnetic Tiles, Clean up set from Melissa and Doug, pajamas, socks and underwear. My 6 year old daughter will be getting the coffee maker from Melissa and Doug, The pizza from Melissa and Doug, and Wooden furniture for her doll house. I also have a lot of little misc. stuff like dinosaurs, cars, blocks, dolls, accessories, and the horse from my generation for my daughters doll. +Momma’s Girls yes! We don’t buy the girls much, cause they get so much from their grandparents off their wishlists. We usually follow the “something you want, something you need, something to wear, and something to read” rules and that means four gifts per child. Due to their age right now and constant buying of clothes cause they are growing and they have plenty of books, we aren’t following it this Christmas. In fact this is the first Christmas Aerie has gifts from us, and Rev has more than one gift. Birthdays we have followed the four rule gift. Minimalism is our friend, and it also is a great thing for kids too 🙂

Nope, you didn’t miss anything. Christmas isn’t about gifts. We also live minimally, specifically with toys. They get plenty from our parents and there is absolutely zero reason for us to get them anymore than we did :-) Starting next year we will implement the same four gift rule that we do for birthdays. speckalou I disagree. There is no such thing as a “normal” amount of presents. Different families have different budgets due to differing financial situations. Some parents don’t believe that Christmas is all about material things and choose to instill that in their children. Seeing as how parents don’t have to buy their children a single thing these children are getting more than enough. I have a feeling they will be very appreciative of their gifts.

Clearly you don’t understand how much my kids love water 😂 We didn’t get to see my nephew for his birthday, so he got a bit more for Christmas since he didn’t get a gift then. We live minimally with our kids and work off wishlists with our family. The grandparents get the girls everything else they need. I will never get my kids gifts out of “precedence” or act like they “deserve more” cause they are my kids. All that would do is raise entitled adults, and the world doesn’t need more of those! Christmas isn’t even about getting gifts ;-)
