Another reason white folk don’t talk about race, is we are tired of being blamed for everything! Our families didn’t own slaves we were dirt poor farmers working our own cotton!

Irish German, stubbornness and determination. If you fall then you're crawling the rest the way. Determination to finish what's started and too stubborn to quit. That's how I go. No self pitty no excuses. I'll get to my feelings when I'm dead. I'm here to rise myself up. Then to take care of the family I make nothing more nothing less. World spins with and without me. It's up to and on me only if I fall or rise. Once I became a man I was taught what was needed and only I choose how to implement it. Therefore it's no one else's responsibility if I fall as it is no one else's responsibility to pick me back up. A real man is determined, unapologetic, responsible, rationally respectful and accountable. Keys for self preservation. There's more but just as a starting line view.

When we were growing up in the 80s, we watched prime time shows where black families were featured, with black doctors, cops, judges, etc. We didn't think it was groundbreaking, we thought it was normal. Why wouldn't a black man or woman be a doctor or politician? Yes, we learned how much was done to get us there, but that's why we also wanted to not go backwards or cling to that time, instead celebrating our current place together. If we saw real racism, we spoke up. No matter which way it went. And we knew our cultures had differences, enjoyed sharing our traditions, and made fun of ourselves together, learning how much we had in common despite the differences.

Yes. It's funny how you can watch old tv shows & movies from the 70s and there were known black actors who populated the stories. Now, it's all seperate. Black movies, black tv, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, which often show stereotypes of white people. Bill Cosby started that in the 90s. This goes for music too. We've been separated more, not less in the last decades. Why is that?

It is a beautiful thing Van and we love that you did that, you wanted to learn about what interests us but I find everytime we try to dig into black culture whether it be music, hairstyles, soul food, or even falling in love with someone of the black race then we are cultural appropriating and it’s offensive and wrong! I hate that especially when it’s usually the same ones that are screaming “equality” but that only applies when it benefits them and not us. It’s so unfortunate that so many keep us divided instead of fighting to bring us together!! We need to take a stand because the real divide isn’t blacks vs whites…it’s rich vs poor

I'm a 64-year-old black man (born in 1960 in Tennessee) who also stepped out of the black community when I joined the U.S. Army. After that, I went into the commercial Satellite Communications world where I became a satellite controller and team leader. I led young white satellite controllers who asked my opinion about current events such as George Floyd, Collin Kaepernick, and many other issues. As a person from the segregated south, I had first hand knowledge of the south that I experienced. This gave them living history rather than cable news. When asked what white people should do, I simply replied "when you see wrong, you should call it out." Don't be complicit in any type of wrong.

Glad Van brought up the “40 acres and a mule.” In the 1860’s that is a substantial start to supporting a family and being able to earn a living. It was an integral part of A. Lincoln’s “Reconstruction.” However, Southern DEMs assassinated Lincoln, and the Vice President/President Andrew Johnson (a Tennessee Democrat) refused to fulfill that part of Reconstruction. Under Johnson’s Presidency, the Southern DEMs fervently begin enacting their laws to limit he freedoms of the newly freed black population.

totally agree. As a adoptee, I didn't find out anything about my acestry til I was in my late 40s. By then I also learned if I wanted to wear something Scandinavian, I was a supremacist, or if I wanted to honor my east asian heritage, I'm appropriating - as an example. Or the saddest story I ever learned was a man who came here from Bavaria just in time to enter the civil war because he fell in love with a Georgia girl, he was on the wrong side and died fairly early in the war. How do I explain that to anyone? We often get discriminated against today for being poor, or being too white, or too old or young and yes I once had a boss who was black and it was clear as day she did not like me because I was white which created a toxic environment and I had to quit before she foud a way to fire me. They both had difficult times and hardships. That being said, they both caught me in situations being narrow minded and ignorant about race. They sat me down and explained to me that real men should judge a man by the content of his character. If enough people choose to judge others by their color or religion, then we as a whole stand a chance of repeating something as recent as what happened in WWII. Then they proceeded to tell me about what they had stood up for in WWII. I have and still look up to them and do my best to make my corner of the world a little better each day.

I've since discovered many wonderful black influencers like yourself willing to have the conversation and do the research and I couldn't be more thrilled. I have to agree with "Old Man Owl's" response. Growing up with the 60's riots and the 70"s desegregation, I always felt like I had to walk on eggshells around black people. In 5th grade my best friend was the only black girl in my school (Natalie). The next year was the first year they started bussing. With her black friends now at school, Natalie forgot I even existed. I didn't feel comfortable asking her about it because none of them acted like they even wanted to be around white people. It was a very confusing and hurtful time for me and I'm sure it was for them also. I always wanted to understand but always felt it wasn't my place to start the conversation. My motto is to treat others the way you want to be treated. If that isn't reciprocated, regardless of race, then I'm not obliged to be a friend.

As a white man, I don't understand why black people want to trace lineage so desperately. I can literally go back 2 generations at most, and that's it....and I don't really care. Why is it so important to go back to Africa? The sad truth about it, from my pov, is that it will only open up pain to do so because THOSE are the people who sold their own into slavery to begin with. And I come from slavic background, the people who literally coined the term salve because they were so enslaved historically. It makes no sense to me.

European's sold their people as slaves also like you said. The Romans, the vikings, the British.🤷🏾‍♀️🙄 But that isn't taught like the Atlantic slave trade. Why? Maybe because they don't want it taught or known just how naferious you were to each other in Europe?🤔 It was only the Africans that "sold their own people" How evil is that?🤨😡 I assume you have a name that wasn't "Given" to you way back in the 16th century. That you still have to this day? For some it is important to go back to Africa because they know that that is where their ancestors were stolen from and wish to know their heritage, culture. To hopefully feel a connection to people that look like you. In a land that you are "naturally" compatible with. Do you have your family name? Are you not proud of who you are? Your Slavic culture? It makes know sense to you because Your people can go anywhere in the world and not be subjected to racial profiling, racial slurs, or physically attacked, deleted even, for being a melanated person 🤨 It makes know sense to you because you have a comfort zone. Which is sitting on the fence of, " I'm not racist" but will see it happen and do nothing! So to answer your question to why "some" of us want to trace back our lineage so desperately? All the above!!!!🤨💯❤️🖤💚✊🏾✊🏿

Love ya Van! I hear you. I am WHITE white, Alabama/Texan and born in Germany (US citizen/Military Family) I grew up in the Military. My two BEST friends as a kid was a Black kid name Johnny and a Mexican kid named Jimmy. We were Joey, Johnny and Jimmy. Maybe because of that friendship and parents who taught me to respect EVERYbody. At 60, I approach each new person as a respected equal UNTIL you show me otherwise. Do I see color? Yeah, I'm not blind. But some humans, it seems, need a reason to hate. If we were all homogenized to a nice caramel color? Some MFers are going to start hating eye color, hair color, you name it. It's not Skin. It's HATE. Hate is lazy and skin shade is not hard to discern. And it is CYCLICAL. And cycles can be broken- we just have to WANT to.

No one in my social environment (family, friends, church family) talks about race because it doesn’t matter to us. Not important. Not a concern by any means. A light bulb went off in my head over the Christmas holidays. My son was home with his fiancee. They’re newly engaged but have been together for five years. It hit me that she’s Chinese! Her parents are both Chinese who immigrated here in the 90’s after they had their daughter. I mean I knew she was Asian, specifically Chinese, but I’d never really paid any attention to it. That’s how little I think about race. I love her so much. She’s very intelligent. Soft spoken. Thoughtful. Those are the only things I care about.

I've been in that same situation actually many times in my family, I'm white and grew up in a Puerto Rican neighborhood around Boston in the 70's and they accepted me and in a number of instances protected me from another race not Puerto Rican (yes that race). I could care less and have never thought about it until around 2000 when DEMS put the full push on about it and steadily got worse. The lies we are taught in schools and the communist Marxist who grab the ear of youth and mislead them causes the strife. It’s crazy to me as I see more racial tension than I saw in the late 60’s early 70’s. Why? Communist Marxist race baiters who intentionally cause strife to divide cause if we ever come together they are done. Why do you think Obama came to divide? Unfortunately black people will never accept that slaves weren't treated in the way they have been told by angry, envious elders. The truth is, most slaves were treated well because slaves were an investment and harming a slave in any way hurt the plantation owner's bottom line. A sick or dead slave meant less work being done. On the other hand, the Irish who only had 7 year servitude contracts, they were treated like trash because the "owner" of the contract knew they only had them for limited time so they needed to work them long and hard, often to the brink of death, before their contract was up.

And the mainstream media, owned by the central bankster elite, has been complicit in that Marxist agenda -- for instance, by consistently focusing on those times when a white cop shoots a black man. Most people don't know that almost 4 people a day are shot and killed by police in the U.S. -- two of them white, one of them black, and one of them everybody else -- Asian, Native American, Latino (of any race), etc. So twice as many whites are killed by police as blacks, on average. And most people also don't know that approximately 95% of the people that are shot and killed by police were themselves also armed -- so we're talking about shootouts with the police. That other 5%, unarmed people shot by the police, also breaks down to twice as many whites as blacks, almost exactly the same breakdown. So why the very specific focus? It's to aid and abet a narrative that there is indeed a white police WAR on black men -- which happens to not be true. Of course there are injustices committed by specific police men and police forces even. But it doesn't help that there are people very high up in the halls of power who WANT us at each other's throats.

One key difference I've noticed between black people and Whites is that Whites.... we don't see race first. We see civilization first. We don't reduce all other Whites we see down to belonging to the same ancestral lineage from the same mother continent to make us all "brothers and sisters" the way black people do. Hell, you'll hear a black guy call a White man his "White brother" before you'll ever hear another White man say this. We don't do that. Why? Because we consider other Whites to be German, British, French, Russian, Italian, etc., above all else. We place all of the importance on the civilization you belong to. We postulate that the values your societies prioritize, and the historical experiences they've endured, are more indicative of who you are than your race.

I feel like saying things like “The first black person to do this or that” inherently separates black people from other people. For existence, saying Obama is the first black president. This then leads to separating him as different from all other presidents, when Id bet most presidents were different than other presidents. They weren’t the same just because their skin color was similar. It shouldn’t be the first this or that person of this color. It can be that it doesnt matter what your skin color is, you can be part of any group you want to be part of really. Unfortunately, it seems many people these days just want to focus on skin color.

It's sad to see how things have gotten worse. As a new teacher over 10 years ago, in my classroom (all black students with a white teacher), we had conversations all the time. I asked questions and they answered. They asked questions and I answered. We learned a lot about each other. There were kids who said they hate all white people cause we had slaves. They found out my Dad came here, my Mom's family also came post-slavery. My Grandma invited a group of black ladies over in the 50s, and said when the neighbors pay her taxes, they can decide who comes to her house, so we just weren't raised to hate other races. I found out so much about what their ideas and experiences were. We had mutual respect and an open attitude then. Classrooms now, you can't do that. It's a microaggression. We had training in our district that focused on the black experience, but teachers at my school are also Chinese, Mexican, Spanish, Serbian, Malaysian, Korean, Philipino, Puerto Rican, Indian, and Jordanian. Not one bit of care about any of their minority lived experiences, so instead of building bridges, it just separated people more. I miss the give-and-take and being able to ask an honest open question without getting labeled as this or that for being curious and trying to connect. Every action isn't really race-based. If you cut me off in traffic, I might think you are distracted, maybe on your phone, maybe late for work, maybe a bad driver, maybe a toddler just threw a cup of cheerios at your head, or maybe a million other possibilities, but it would never cross my mind that it's because of our respective skin tones. It doesn't signify in most situations. I also don't like the kids now being unwilling to do anything if someone who "looks like them" hasn't done it. White astronauts would never have walked on the moon if they waited for that, because nobody at all ever did it before. We program this separateness into kids, and it's like they don't have permission to do whatever the heck they can imagine, because they aren't allowed to imagine because people doing it so far don't have the same color skin as they do. I get there's cultural differences, too, but they talk about looks. To me, you look like a human being (with whatever skin tone God gave you), so go do whatever you can dream. I have a lot of admiration for those who do pursue it, the ones who crash through the barriers and open the way for those who need to NOT be first. I wonder how the human race will move forward if too many of us need to not be the first one to do some great accomplishment. In my childhood home, our neighbor across the alley was a black airline pilot. Why not? But nowadays, nobody has the confidence to trailblaze. In an era when the very first human EVER to do something could be black, who is telling and teaching black kids that they have to wait their turn??? Why couldn't one of them be the very first human AT ALL to step foot on Mars, for example? What are we doing to our future by limiting kids to only doing things that others have already done? Thanks for this video and being open to take a stroll through the minefield of race. I enjoy your videos a lot, and definitely love how you mentor others. You are insightful and open minded, and it's so good to see that in today's world where people of every color seem to silo ourselves off from each other. God bless you!

"There were kids who said they hate all white people cause we had slaves. They found out my Dad came here, my Mom's family also came post-slavery." This is a big crux of why a lot of white people get tired of hearing about race. The massive influx of Irish, Scottish, Polish and Italian immigrants from the late 1870s to the early 1930s means that there are literally millions upon millions of white people who not only had nothing to do with anything prior, and were also quite often subjected to some of the same Jim Crow style laws because for many years white meant English and nothing else. Some of the most vehement supporters of dismantling segregation laws, anti-interractial marriage laws and miscegenation laws ended up being the very people that get told day in and day out that they're willing participants of oppression.

Reality is, white people made a "Black History" month to feel better about themselves as white people. White people have been vilified for several decades now. Some have succumbed; some have rebelled; neither of which ends up good. Which is why most white people dont wanna talk about it. We aren't 'guilty' and do resent being characterized as such, but we aren't interested in and don't feel that racial animosity is the answer - which is the inevitable results when white people attempt to speak about it.

White people can't really trace their lineage back very far either. Yes, we can associate our last name with a specific geographic location but we have nothing in common with people from that part of the world aside from the name and some genetic material. The thing that always irritated me was when someone takes great pride in the association of a culture they have no understanding of. "I'm Polish" "I'm Italian" "I'm Dutch-Irish" it's like no TF you aren't.

Father was born and raised in the Virgin Islands. Race was a none issue. 20 years Air Force. Who ever was working in his shop came to the house for dinner. All races. As a “white” guy race is not something that matters. In high school on St Thomas USVI, I was hit, spit on, and told I could not go into businesses because I was “white “. That was their problem , not the total “black” community. Each person is taken as an individual. Currently have several “black” friends. But they are not representing all black peoples, just themselves. It’s that simple. Each person is unique. They represent themselves!

I have this one girlfriend. She happens to be black. I only say that is bc it pertains to the conversation. We have the most amazing relationship. I love that she gives me perspective, and she loves that I do too. She's also on the opposite end of the political spectrum. It's such a refreshing connection. You remind me of her bc you challenge and celebrate each other and encourage us to be curious about other experiences.

I have (I think she left me, so had) a dear black female friend because of Kamala Harris. I had posted that I did not think she had the intelligence to be President of the United States. In response and to my shock, she asked me if I was racist? Did I think she (my friend) was a DEI hire. I told her that she hurt my feelings for asking me if I was racist. It hurt me to the core. As far as Kamala, I pointed out verbatim what Biden said and that I knew she (my friend) wasn’t a DEI hire because I had known her most of my life and knew her character, her intelligence, her grace. It has shaken me that as a white person, I questioned the ability of a person of color, this person that I considered a dear friend, turned on me.

I am sorry to hear about how your friend reacted to your objective observation about an individual. Try to forgive her and forget it, maybe she will come around (you did say you had known her most of your life, so she knows you too). White liberals react the same way as your friend did regarding any issue that involves anyone who is nonwhite. They assume the worst about you. For white liberals, it seems to have more to do with them assuming they are morally superior to other people.

Same thing happened to me when I was a kid. We grew up in the country and the girl down the road was black, we became friends. One day her cousins from town got off the bus at her house. The entire bus ride home was horrible because her cousins were a bunch of loud mouthed bigots and picked arguments and called everyone names all the way home. She never said a word. It hurt.

What happened is that the situation expose the racism in your friends heart. You were her "white friend", not her friend, a category designed and maintained to keep you and others at a certain distance lest she really have to deal with her own flawed beliefs. However, there's always hope because people can grow.

It's exclusive programming. Very similar to behavior modification. In politics the message is being pushed across the board, even in schools. I got a dose of this at a barbecue a few years back. In the form of an 8 year old girl arguing with her mother about Trump. The child went Jekyll to Hyde in a millisecond, as if she had been reciting rote poilitical slogans. There's no way it happened like that organically with this child. How many 8 year olds give a flying crap about politics enough to actually "hate" a president?

You can only trace it so far back because your country of ancestral origin never got past the stone age and the reason you can trace it at all is because your ancestors ended up in what became a first world country.

Wow wow I loved the way you summed this up. You made me realize if we could just listen to each other..really listen.with an open mind we would all see each other as just people who are more alike than different. We have been taught to emphasize the difference in a negative way instead of becoming more enriched by it. I am so impressed with the way you choose to introduce this type of thinking . Brilliant!! Totally.

I was born in 1965. Moved to the big island of Hawaii from Oregon when I was 8, so early 70’s. Lived in a rural sugar cane plantation town. I was one of two white people in my class. I didn’t care and was excited to make friends. I experienced bullying and was called names because I was haole (white). Until then I never thought about race. Yea, it’s tough out there. Kids can be meaner than adults. But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I persevered and was not a victim. I never have judged anyone for the pigment of their skin or their financial condition (we were also poor). There are wonderful people and bad people of every nationality, culture and income level.

Van, I am white and I don't give a rats ass about color. I treat every person as an equal and totally ENJOY learning about other cultures and where they came from and hear their family stories!!! I have friends from ALL cultures and we get along GREAT because we respect each other! I am a rock n roller from the get go, ACDC, et al, BUT I went to an Earth, Wind and Fire concert when I was 17 and loved every minute of it and I think I was one of about 20 people in entire arena! Thank you for branching out...

Growing up my daddy always told me I was a Heinz 57, a mutt … and as my sister (half - different father) started looking into her family lineage, she also started looking into mine because my daddy passed away in ‘99, and she wanted to give me my own history as a gift. Seems daddy was right, and his side of the family has been equal opportunity lovers for at least the past 2 centuries 🤣🤣 so far there’s Irish, Italian, Filipino, Native American, Egyptian, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, South African, and few others. She pushing me to do a DNA test, but I’m not really interested, mostly because I know I’m a human and an American, that’s enough for me. I would only be interested if it told me the stories of those lives that went into that lineage, but it can’t, so I would rather trace it ancestor by ancestor, because that’s my history. That’s all our history, the love, sweat, and tears that were poured into the lives that lead to ours, not the color of our skin - because our skin color doesn’t tell the whole story.

Even those Amercans who've been here for generations don't know their ancestry in any detail. It's not only a lack of interest. Prior to the 1860's the census only listed the head of household and sex and age range of the other occupants. Not to mention courthouses with paper records occasionally burnt down.

I don't think it's necessary to talk about race. I grew up Christian and was taught that we're all God's children and we're all brothers and sisters in his eye. I hate the subject, and I can't stand when someone puts emphasis on it. Like we can teach "ALL" American history in school, especially the darkest parts, and stop leaving out things. And I want people to stop enabling our youth to have victims mentally. We all have every opportunity to achieve our goals, no matter what they are. Regardless of skin color, religion, or upbringing.
