also, nobody likes the 'bike towing' in The Netherlands. In some cities they rather buy a new bike than to pay the fine and get their bikes back (the towed bike storage is always somewhere far away from the center, with terrible public transport acces)
@robv.867619 сағат бұрын
The bike towing/removal comes in various forms. Cities may have a "fiets fout = fiets weg" policy, where a bike that is wrongly parked in a busy area will be removed my the municipality within hours. But they also remove orphaned bikes, that is, bicycles that have stood untouched for say a month or so. The system is the same: the bicycle gets a tag, and if it's not removed within a certain timeframe (indicated by the tag), it gets towed. You can retrieve it at the edge of the city, where the town has the city public works or city recycling station.

And conversely, I saw a lot in Prague, where I lived for a month this summer, that we should imitate in the USA! (Thanks for all your great Prague recommendations, btw!) For one, credit card machines on all the trams and buses! Most cities in America (like Boston, where I live) do not make it convenient to pay for public transportation, but it was totally effortless in Prague. A simple thing that makes such a big difference for residents and visitors alike. Way to go, Prague!

The city is therefore attractive for investors and project developers. I wish I had known you were in Groningen because I would have been more than happy to guide you in other cities as well. Ironically, Groningers (and a lot of tourists) HATE the bicycle tow trucks, because they drive around a few times a day and give you about a 15 minute window before your bike gets removed, and most new people just think their bike got stolen, until someone lets them know about the tow trucks. You wouldn’t believe how often people walk into my store to ask whether they saw someone take their bike. Also, if the towing people think there’s still plenty of room for it, they’ll cram as many bikes in the parking area as they can, and you’ll have to move 10 bikes out of the way until you can finally get yours back, as your handlebar and paddles just get hooked into the bikes next to yours. Moreover, there’s not nearly enough room in the tiny parking areas for the amount of bikes we have, so I would prefer if they stopped doing it. The last thing I want after a long workday is having to walk 10 minutes to the bike depot because someone thought they deserved my spot more than me, and removed my bike from the parking area. All in all, I kinda understand why they do it if there’s not enough space to walk, but having sidewalks filled with bikes is just part of Groningen’s image, and the fine is just a way for the local government to get more money from its citizens. Ironically, the white bricks in the road are not very visible in most spots, so they just painted ugly white lines on the ground, as most people didn’t even realize there were designated parking spots for bikes. Very glad you liked the Forum, though! People like to complain about how it’s ugly or expensive, but I love it personally. I will say it looks a little awkward, such a modern-looking building between all those older ones, but it’s a thousand times better than its predecessor.

So basically what you learned was that Czech Republic needs more money. None of the "free for public" hipster stuff and modern architecture in Denmark is cheap. One might say that those are overengineered and totally unnessesary, but the difference is that they have money to do it. Czech Republic has not. In Czechia only 20% of the people are happy with the state of the economy. While inflation slows down in the rest of the EU, it rises in the Czech Republic. Estates, rents, electricity and grocery prices are sky high. Electricity is ~0,20€-0,30€ kWh around the year which is one of the highest in EU. You would think that the local prices would follow local wages but that is not the case at all. As person who is originally from Finland living in Prague, it is incomprehensible that Czech Republic is nowadays way more expensive than Finland. Avarage Finnish wages are 3700€ (~93 500czk) when in Czech Republic it is only 36 651czk (~1400€) but food on the table costs exactly the same. In Czechia only the Pilsner is cheap.
@MKMK-dv3cd18 сағат бұрын
The worst thing is that Czechs can't really acknowledge that. Maybe It's only my social bubble but when I say something similar what you've said to czech people or even other foreigners they are either downplaying it or they do not believe me. It's really about the time for Czechs to really acknowledge it. My wife is from Southern California, I am a Czech and we live in Czech republic. We usually spend about 1-3 months every year in SoCal and even SoCal became at almost everything to be at the same price level, The cars, The gas, The car insurance, The electronics are cheaper over there. The grocery are at about the same price level (Fruits, vegetables and meat are mostly even cheaper in CA), Heck there is no sales tax on groceries while in Czech republic It's 12% or 21%, Generally crazy California is a tax paradise in comparison with Czech republic (except for the property tax). The utilities (electricity, water, natural gas) are about the same or lower, The water supply in dry SoCal was lower on my in laws bill than I have in Czech republic! Believe it or not. I work for an American company and my salary is about 2.7-3 times lower than my american coworkers at the same position make. Well, I've applied for immigration visa for a spouse of a US citizen and we plan to move to the US. If I sell our condo here I can buy 4 bedrooms/2 garages house in the US (Not in SoCal but still in a suburb of a major city). Chat GPT says that the average residential property price per square foot in California was as of late 2024, approximately $400-$450 per square foot (the statewide average). And based on Deloitte index Q2/2024 It was 101700 CZK/sq meter in Czech republic which is about $406 per sqft. I could write even longer comment to compare our neighbors (Germany, Austria or even Poland) with Czech republic and that would be even more sad story.
@spacedog_8016 сағат бұрын
That is, of course, not accurate. These buildings and projects are financed by cities, not countries. Looking at the list of the richest European cities per capita, Prague ranks in the top 25. Among the cities mentioned in the video, only Copenhagen surpasses Prague in GDP. All the other cities rank below Prague. By the way, the Finnish capital, Helsinki, is also below Prague on that list. Prague is not a poor city-quite the opposite. It could definitely afford such architectural projects if it wanted to.

It's Lublaň in Czech, so I suppose someone editing to video didn't bother checking the right spelling. Otherwise I'd say that Janek pronounced it correctly, didn't he?

In Amsterdam it has a concert place called Paradiso, that was a church in the past. It was sick to watch a Metal band performing there 😂

I have a strange feeling that Western Europe is becoming more like Eastern Europe. It seems like Eastern Europe is becoming safer and more livable.

I am not sure if picking up bicycles to truck for wrong parking is applicable. Its literally impossible to leave bicycle outside, and even inside, otherwise bike will be stolen. If it is parked inside, then it must not be visible from outside, or thieves will sneak into building from outside and steal bikes. These commerce bikes are another story.

I live in a very bike-y city (Leiden) and theft of regular bikes has really gone downhill since the rise of e-bikes and the presence of lease bikes (Swapfiets). Sure, the more ostentatiously expensive ones still get stolen, and the rule is still to park your tattered old banger next to a better-looking bike, but theft is noticeably down since a few years ago.

The "no vehicals around school zones" is a good idea but that would not work in Canada, especially during the winter.

How about doing something about all the graffiti tagging in Prague? I walked from the train station to the Charles bridge using google maps last February and it was crazy.

There is a place called Pražská křižovatka in Prague which is an old church turned into an exhibition/place for holding events. I don't know if it is open to the public though. It might be for closed events only.
