I have hesitated to do a video with my senior horses because, news flash my 35 year horse doesn't look like a 10 year old horse gasp! But haters are gonna hate, so I'm doing this video for those of you that are caring for your senior horses right up until the end. My guys get fed prepared wet feed 4 times a day most days, sometimes only 3 depending on my schedule, and have free choice hay all the time and some pasture time. I forgot to mention in the video that Pugsy gets soaked hay pellets in place of the beet pulp pellets in his additional feedings throughout the day. Beet pulp takes a long time to soak and the other horses get it too, but for the additional feedings I use the alfalfa timothy pellets for ease and speed of soaking. Also, when I mention that Pugsy chokes, he has always been able to resolve it quickly on his own.

Thank you so much for sharing. You are doing a great job for your horses. I have one 31, one 24 and one 22 and am trying to figure out how to best provided for them. The two mares have Cushings which makes it more of a challenge. Blessings to you..

Thank you for this video! I’m caring for a family members 35 yr old horses and one of them chokes. It took me a little bit to understand what I needed to do. It was super helpful to see how “soupy” you made his feed.

Thanks, great info! I recently acquired an older horse I suspect with Cushings because of lack of easier shedding . Losing weight on pasture, hay and grain with supplements. Haven’t tried beet pulp. Vet coming soon to check. Fingers crossed for a beet pulp supplement

Best of luck! Thank you for taking in a senior horse! If you do get a diagnosis of Cushings, Pet Health Pharmacy has a good price on Pergolide. Boomer was on it for 14 years, and now I have a mare in her 20's on it. It's not a stable drug, so keep it in the house where it is climate controlled. Prascend is another option, but more expensive. Your vet can go over all of that with you :)

@@ShadeTreeStables I'm sure. I lost one tragically and now have this old Cushings guy who battles infections and needs weight. Trying to watch everything I can on KZbin to help get him on the right track. Again, sorry you lost Boomer. He had an amazing life I'm sure.

Thanks so much for this video!! I have a 26yr old QH horse (lifelong cribber/barely no front teeth😣) he recently had a dentist visit and lost some more teeth/grinding surface. The dentist said that my guy really needs to start the transition over to alternative forage (he’s already getting some senior feed and hay pellets.) I’m confused on giving him pound for pound of grass hay to grass hay pellets like his dentist mentioned. if he’s on 20-25lbs of hay a day, that’s what I give him in pellets (split in meals?). If he finishes those fairly quickly then what will he be doing the rest of the time (other than standing around…without hay…making his cribbing worse). Ughh if a horse is supposed to be a constant forager how can I remove his hay….seems cruel. I asked the dentist if we can just leave hay out there for him and he said we could, we just have to be very careful of him quidding it, causing choke or worse…colic. With him having very little to no teeth- It’ll definitely be an adjustment period, but him and I will get it figured out…together. Especially with help from videos like yours. Sorry for rambling on, this is all so new to me. I feel like I’m learning how to feed a horse all over again…after 16 years of owning him. 🤦🏼‍♀️🐴❤️thanks again 🙂

Look into Shires ball feeder and put hay pellets in it if he can handle them dry 😊

I know this is an older comment, but my 31 year old had serious wave mouth... no surface grinding area left for her last 5 years. The vet recommended replacing all of her hay with cubes/ pellets, but also keeping some hay in front of her for "recreational purposes". There was no safety concerns about her quidding, and my other rescue was happy to clean up after her.

I have a 23 year old Standardbred and a 14 year old appaloosa quarter horse cross - we get seriously cold winters here - what do you suggest - my older horse goes in the barn around 4:30 and I don't blanket my other sweet baby. I would like to bring them - at least for the summer - to my property but I am concerned - thank you!

As long as they can chew hay, and have plenty of it, and can get out of the wind, most horses do fine. The breakdown of hay in the cecum, is like a wood stove inside the horse.

What size is your feed scoop? 3 quarts or 4 quarts?
@ShadeTreeStables
@ShadeTreeStables 4 жыл бұрын
I'm heading out there in a bit, I will check! I'd say it's more about how your horse is holding weight as each one is different and some will do better on more or less food, so only use my measurements as a starting point :)
