What I made from 11 yards of mystery fabric (PATTERN NOTES!)

recently I bought a mystery box from fabric warehouse direct. hah. it turned out to have boatloads of Satin which I used to make 7 mockups. Which are your favorites?

Oh WOW! I admire your tirelessness, Karen! You can do so much mockup sewing and everything looks as great as it was a proper garment. I love the choice of patterns, especially Vogue trousers and the blazer. Well done!

Thanks Joanna! It's easier to sew mock ups than cutting into expensive fabric, you can be a little sloppier and mistakes are okay. I think I am just nervous about making the final garment, so I keep doing more mock ups! I will try the blazer first. Happy sewing!

Hi Karen. Wow -- you did great with all the satin. The fit of almost all the things is spot on. Can't wait to see what fabric you choose to make your favorite patterns up in. I took a free motion quilting class, so am spending my sewing time practicing techniques before I tackle quilting my mom's memory quilt. I can do flowers and hearts OK, but want to do flying birds (my own design) -- that's really hard to do free form. I've stitched a lot of practice birds with not enough girth or square beaks or jerkey lines or bad positioning or that look like a hawk head on a songbird body. It's all a journey. Ah, the memory quilt..I can't wait to start mine. I'm so nervous to start cutting into the fabric. What a great idea to take a class. I looked at some freehand quilting patterns and they are pretty impressive. I'm imagining your birds right now and see how hard it would be to get the parts right. It sounds like a very fun project. I bought a bunch of scrap squares I intend to use to practice making a quilt, or maybe a quilted jacket, so we'll see how it goes! Have fun with your projects too!

Hi Karen, I agree with your opinion of the slip dress. It's cute and would fit me the same way though. The white pants look comfortable if a bit . . .noisy?. I really liked the combo of the blue jacket and skirt, very posh. It's funny you mentioning Mood as I downloaded the marigold cami from them just yesterday. I was thinking I might be too busty for it but it looked very nice on you(the green satin is beautiful). I'll just have to remember to tweak the baggy bit on the 'side boob' 😀. Thank you for your video and for modelling the mock ups too.

I laughed out loud when I read your comments about those white pants. They are noisy, especially when I walk...swish swish swish. They are also noisy to look at, very bright white! I just downloaded another mood pattern, the Anara wrap dress--I am really enjoying their free patterns. We'll see how this one turns out. The blue jacket and skirt, yes, they are shimmery! If I get the courage, maybe I'll wear the outfit to my christmas party next year. Happy sewing!

Wow, you have been busy. It's a shame about the slip dress, as that satin would have made a nice nightdress, but that is so not working for you. I always have to lower my bust point and empire lines when I sew anything!!! I really liked the Mood camisole top. That could easily be extended to become a dress and would have been a lot better fit than the Simplicity one. See, pants and zippers are not that hard, they just take a little practice. I see why you liked the fit on the white pants. I would still probably add just a tad to the very back rise, but otherwise how awesome are they. I might be wrong, but I think they would be even more comfortable in a standard pants fabric. I don't have the patience to make that many new patterns at once. Kudos to you!!

I was thinking the same thing about the mood camisole, I still have purple and black satin left. I like your advice on the white pants and am going to take it, thank you as always for your tips! I think I made so many mock ups because I am postponing cutting into my favorite fabric--that's so hard! The mock gave me a chance to be sloppy too. I'll probably slow down a lot now that I am using my pretty fabric....where to start!
