@58:55 You cannot directly compare sensor megapixels with screen megapixels because of the bayer matrix. For example, a 40 MP camera only has 10 M *red* pixels, but a 5K display has 15 M of them. A higher megapixel camera resolves colors much better on modern displays, minimizing interpolation artifacts. And sure, it also allows generous cropping, which is often needed when shooting with primes.

The original SL SLR actually is named after the built-in meter which measured "selective light". It was the second Leica SLR after the Leicaflex.

I'm really curious about the dinged up lens ring because it's something I've noticed particularly with Leica photographers (not necessarily you), but how does one get so many dings on the lenses and the camera body? I have been a professional photographer for over 15 years and still have some of the original cameras I used and they're almost in mint condition aside from wear on the buttons and eye cup. I have recently purchased a Panasonic S5IIX with the Leica certified 50mm 1.4 (a $2200 USD lens and one of the most expensive I've ever purchased) and I can't imagine dinging it up like that. And my gear is taken out into the field too and is used as tools, but with extra care in mind to protect it. I understand that stuff happens and sometimes is unavoidable, but is it just from accidents? Are the lenses banging together in a bag? Are they being dropped or slid across the floor? Or bumping into people or objects? I was just curious because that is some really nice and expensive gear you have there and even though I'm sure they're over-engineered to handle such treatment it's a shame to see them get dinged up! Happy new year!

I have used the SL for long shutter speed work myself. It is very easy to have it do shutter speeds of several minutes. I see the M11 allows for 60 minute exposures though, whereas the M10 was much shorter.

I can't get excited about the SL either. I have the original typ 601 and most of time it sits on the workbench. My belief and experience is, once you fall in love with the M system, nothing else will do.

Thorsten talking about clarity pixels color Science if you had the Leica sl3 or the Hasselblad X2D what would you pick and why because the X2D is very appealing from what people are reporting, thank you
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard 2 күн бұрын
The 100 MP sensor in the Hasselblad X2D and 907X is the same and is in fact very good color science. I prefer the 907X and as such it is a very different way of taking photos than any other camera, and very different from the SL3. I think Hasselblad opened the lid to the idea that it can be better and easier, and that should inspire others to make color science and not just hardware. So we will see where that goes. I've interviewed a few people who made these things, and an article or something will be coming on what it is and how it was done 🙂

Yes, they're easier to work with, and the SL3 seem to utilize the 60MP sensor better.

I have the original silver iteration of this lens (indeed a Helios) which I picked up from a charity shop, and I cleaned it up. Takes amazing photos with swirly Bokeh........A bit soft at F1.5 but sharpens up nicely when stopped down, however the bokeh suffers....It is a serious lump of metal so I have dubbed mine "The Holy Hand-Grenade of Antioch".....Cheers to Monty Python!

I thought the Leica R8 was the most beautiful camera ever - until I actually saw one in person. I realized then that the R8's curved lines didn't work that well with (large) flat dials and flat, glass screens. Still, I think that if the SL3 was as beautiful as the R8 and R9 - or my M10-R - I might buy one. But the SL3 is just not a beautiful camera.

The SL3 is a production machine. Might be lovable on a tripod in a studio as well. My 601 is parked on a tripod for videos, with external power and wireless microphones attached at all times. Very different from M.

@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard , you were right. If you want auto-focusing and a built-in, through-the-lens viewfinder, buy the SL3. But did they have to make the SL3 so homely?

I noticed that when it came out, and then ever since I never looked at it again. It actually doesn't even tell me if the camera is on (which it should; but it's to weak pulsing light for me to see it in daylight).

May I ask why? I like the form factor of the SL3 over the SL2, and the menu design (the actual typeface) and overall just feel more comfortable with the SL3. Not that there isa big difference, but that is the one I use and leave the SL2 at home.

@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard for me who make mostly portraits the flip screen is a nonstarter. The ISO dial is too loose, and I don't like the icons, and I find the older design more pure. The new design is a step towards Sony. I bought a Fuji GfX 100 and I'm very happy. But I will keep my SL2 and might add a SL2S as I still have a lot of Leica lenses
