I know a lot of people do this successfully, but sadly with my baseline anxiety this would ruin me mentally 🫣 (also I have to pay for monthly psychiatric support + do a combat sport, so I believe it still makes sense in my situation despite the pain of paying it lol)

Grew up moving around different parts of queens. Our last place was college point queens. My family used to pay 2100 total for a three bedroom two bathroom second floor apartment with a balcony out front, and you could see the water and the Whitestone bridge from it. That was only back in 2020. It was a long commute on the train after first catching a bus, but it was so worth it. Our landlord was nice to never rent increase on us, but he did for the next person after us. we live in CT now. Also it’s crazy that metrocards are now 2.90. I remember when they were 2.25 :/ dang New York.

When I was laid off, i decided to NOT take COBRA beyond the first three free months. My payments were roughly $1500 too. I started to do self-pay at doctor's visits and even for lab tests, and medications whenever needed. The thing is that my entire year's out-of-pocket medical cost still came out to be wayyyyyyy less than $18,000 per year for COBRA. I live in southern California but just came back from a two month stay in NY. I drove a lot while I was there (used an old honda accord that my brother-in-law had lent me). While i had to constantly deal with the stress of finding street parking, i feel like it saved me a ton of time and money in the end.

Yeah, I think when I calculated it my portion of the insurance would have been only $100-200 more than paying out of pocket for my meds. But that little of a difference was worth the peace of mind in covering any freak accidents that could happen. I think for people who are less anxious than I am it's definitely an option to consider :)

@WesleyAnna3 ай бұрын
Yeah it was wild since it's COBRA (extension of corporate insurance). We would've applied for state-sponsored but thought the gap would be shorter than it was and didn't want to risk finding new docs/pharmacies for our meds etc. But we're on state in CA now so it's much better!!

The algorithm got me. Interesting post. You spend a lot for someone who does not have a regular job. I’d suggest getting a job and pursue your passions until it makes enough money for you to quit. At some point the financial strain is going to depress you and you will end up in a bad place.
@WesleyAnna3 ай бұрын
FWIW this is fairly low day-to-day spending for someone in NYC heh (bulk of my costs are rent/insurance). But you're right, it is a financial strain and we just moved home because of it. :)

So, if you want to survive in New York City, you basically need to reduce your apartment rent to $500/month, say goodbye to your health insurance, and you'll be fine. It's pretty doable, especially if you can add $500 in rent from your partner. Let's make the next video about looking for a $1,000/month apartment in New York. You are not reading instagram messages ;)
