After having looked at dozens of videos on YT, I find your video the most informative and well made. I like that you gave your opinion about some of the equipment you have. And although I am not doing "off road" motocamping (I ride a BMW R1200RT) your equipment and explanations make a lot more sense than most of the other videos I have found... I live in Arizona and go from desert to 7000+ feet in the mountains here. I am looking forward to watching your other videos.....Ride Safe

+Mizzuz Moto could get your weight down some if you lost the burners and packed a lighter and tinder kit, cooked on open flame. The ability to make fire is the most important thing, those fire-steels tho.. 21 years camping in some remote bush, never needed one, a Bic and matches is enough.. Map compass magnifying glass is a good fall back.. end of the day if you have lace up boots (or any cordage) you have a fire drill. (knowledge is weightless) Lose the citronella candle, smokey (smudge) fire will deal with the biting insects. Take a second knife, a small multi tool (leatherman is good) on your belt is very handy. You will never find a bushcrafter complaining about too many knives. replace your 10ah charger (I can assure you it isn't 10,000mah, your motorcycle battery is likely only around 7.5 ah look how big and heavy it is.) with an 'optimate 102' basically allows you to charge USB off your bike battery, has reverse polarity and short circuit protection and wont allow you to run your bike battery below 50% when installed on a bike it takes up no room and adds about 150-200grams. Your light tarp, if you make a cotton oil cloth tarp (not much cheaper than buying a nylon 'backpacking tarp') they are much more resilient to abrasion and spark and don't pack up much larger. Just some ideas.. not criticizing good to see your load out and thanks for taking the time to do the vid. I like your MRE style food system, very similar to my own system.

Thank you for the time and effort it took to put this together. I've 1200GS and I'm in process of trying to pack all my camping gear into my two panniers and a dry bag that would go across my back seat. I like the idea of REI chair - wasn't planning on it because I assumed they are to bulky - will have to revisit. I'm going on 3500 miles trip later on this year so I'm planning on shorter test rides.

Based on your advice I got BMW half cover - something I've not even though about but now I see all kinds of benefits. I couldn't bring myself to spend money on your top bag, but maybe later I upgrade. I'm going to southern Utah in a couple of days for a test run to see what will work. what will not. I like the way you are organized and will try to emulate some of that as well. - thank you.

You bet - will be glad to share. One thing I just saw today and ordered is Ogio tail bag. It replaces your rear seat with storage. I saw one on a 1200GS today and looked great. You can put top case over it. I think it will make a great storage for tools compressor etc.

Hey, my dad has a 008 f1200 gs that he uses for wilderness exploration, camping, daily driving, and pretty much anything else. He has the BMW boxes on the bike and they have tie downs to stack a ridiculous amount of shit on top of. I believe some after market boxes have this too, but the point is being able to have tie downs to strap stuff on top makes life much easier.

Just watched your video and I first thought I wouldn't watch 40 minutes but I did because it was interesting, you explained your choices very well and have a very nice, clear speaking voice. I had to smile a few times because many of your choices were the same as I've made and probably for similar reasons. You may have purchased a new, lighter sleeping bag by now but if you haven't you may want to consider down. I see you're from Washington state so you may be concerned with wet conditions but if you can keep your sleeping bag dry, a down bag is considerably warmer, packs considerably smaller, and will be lighter size for size. I also wanted to comment on your hatchet and suggest a substitute. Maybe look at one of the many folding saws for those odd times you may need to clear the trail. A saw also works great at quickly cutting firewood. After cutting firewood length pieces you can then use your Mora knife and a chunk of wood to process some kindling for starting a fire. I have nothing against the hatchet but by nature of their short handle can be dangerous unless you're very careful. Well done.
@MizzuzMoto8 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on the hatchet. I've since abandoned that and carry a Bahco Laplander for all the reasons you mentioned. As for the sleeping bag, I do think down is the best option for me but am torn between a sleeping bag versus a down quilt (from Enlightened Equipment). Just can't decide so I'm still using the North Face bag since it really is a good enough bag. And thanks for sitting through the entire video - I honestly didn't think I was going to ramble on for so long :-).

FYI: that looks like a pair of rock solid panniers. You can play the what if game all you want with any product. The panniers are made out of aluminum to save weight. The plastic hooks are likely made of high grade ABS and therefore should be extremely strong (steel and aluminum don't play well together and wouldn't trust aluminum hooks AT all). Aluminum is very flexible. The 2 STEEL "screws" are more than enough if the welds are done properly
@MizzuzMoto7 жыл бұрын
After several trips and a couple of dumps of the bike, these panniers have held up surprisingly well. Your assessment is spot on - thanks Vic!

I have the same spoon only shorter and have always hated how the spoon wasn't long enough for the MH bags, gonna buy the longer one on my next trip to REI Anchorage 2. Greetings from Portugal, I just loved this video for two reasons. First is very professional, the way you organized the stuff to show us, was just perfect. Second, we can see you enjoyed it a lot :).. I just would like to add to your gear 2 things, a fuel can and a couple of water bottles. Camping is always an adventure and having fuel reserve and water is the must. Check Rotopax fuel cans and Givi accessories. Anyway, tks for the video and i have a Mora knife as well ehehe ... take care, ride safe.
@MizzuzMoto8 жыл бұрын
You're right! I just bought a Rotopax 1 gallon fuel pack and I have a 2L dromedary bag that I use for water (although I really don't like the taste it produces). I may switch over to water bottles but that takes up space when empty so still looking for a solution. But like you said, fuel and water shouldn't be overlooked. Thanks for watching and providing additional advice - appreciate it :-)

Very good vid, thanks Mizzuz. It can definitely also be a struggle getting my 1200 GSA upright when loaded. This works for me: Get on low-side and get your weight across quickly to the high-side footpeg. Bump all your weight on the high-side, and be ready to catch and balance as the bike comes upright off the sidestand. I know BMW says not to put your weight on the bike while it's on its stand, but get the technique right, and you're actually putting most weight on the wheelbase, before actually straining the side-stand. Hope to run across you in the PNW, as I'm just across the border!

Instead of a heavy axe, may I suggest a large toothed silky saw. Less packed room and weight, less energy to cut through wood and faster. If you need to kindle wood you can use a survival knife in a baton fashion. I used to use a hatchet as well but after some time this seems to be a bit more "high speed" just a thought as you mentioned you like to get things down to small and lite. Great vid!

For your axe usage I definitely recommend watching some of wranglestars videos super great channel and he goes over tons of axe things as well as self reliance and just great knowledge. I would also day if you want to go a bit lighter and easier look at a Tomahawk. I'd use it before making the decision on getting one but the cold Steel pipe hawk is good, I recommend them because you can take the head off and have just the handle makes it super easy to pack versus working things around the fixed handle and axe head.
@MizzuzMoto9 жыл бұрын
+animewolfkid1 Thanks animewolfkid1 - I've actually switched from bringing an axe to using a Laplander saw which is much easier. I use my Mora for batoning if I need to process smaller wood pieces. If you're not proficient with an axe, a much safer alternative is a folding saw which is much lighter as well. Axe cuts tend to be quite serious, not a good thing if you're off in the back-country by yourself. Love the video..makes my stuff look a little dated.
@MizzuzMoto9 жыл бұрын
+Rob Vann Yes, I'm second-guessing my axe purchase as I'm not cut out to be a woodsman/woman :-). I have an old folding Bahco saw that I'll probably carry instead. Thanks for the recommendation. All this gear will be outdated in no time but no need to upgrade if it works right?

How in the world do you manage that?? My latches won't close all the way without us turning the key to lock :-(.
@Buszzbait698 жыл бұрын
+Mizzuz Moto hope this makes sense. the latch closes with the key @ the 12 o'clock position and Will stay latched while riding without the key in it. if you want to lock it, turn the key to 3 o'clock and push the latch further in then turn the key to 12 o'clock and pull the key out. in sense there are two pressure points to the latch..hope this helps.
@MizzuzMoto8 жыл бұрын
+Buszzbait69 We went back out to try it and although it seems to stop at the first pressure point, I wouldn't trust it not to pop open when traveling offroad.  It would probably be totally fine on the freeway or around town but I run into some pretty bumpy terrain so in those cases, I suspect locking them would be wise. Thanks for the pointer - at least now I know there is an option :-).

I would love to see how you made the netting inside the pannier

Hi Vince, it's simply buying some sturdy netting, measuring it to fit your lid and running a bungee cord along the perimeter and tying off at the end.
@vin3747 жыл бұрын
how did you attach it to the lid?
@MizzuzMoto7 жыл бұрын
The Givi Outback cases have hooks built into the lids for their accessory net www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/givi-e144-trekker-outback-elastic-net. We wanted to make our own - i think it cost us about $10 in materials.

Hey there... I enjoy your videos and your choices for camping. I have a 2012 F650GS Twin and am just getting started with motorcycle camping in Southern California. I currently have the BMW Vario cases and am considering a change to aluminum cases - at least for my side cases. I don't use the top case when I go camping so it isn't worth replacing. Would you mind sharing why you changed from the Touratech to the Givi side cases? Maybe that's in another of your videos but I haven't run across it yet. Thanks and keep the videos coming.

the only reason is cost. I highly recommend touratech as the first option. I got a super deal on the Givis that I couldn't pass up. Thanks for watching and looking forward to your videos!

Hey MM- watching your video and your BA CopperSpur2P tent caught my eye. I have a MSR that has the 3 poles threading thru sleeves. Not a fun set up. My tent is over 10 years old and tent designs are always improving. Anyway do you still like your BA tent and would you recommend ? Thanks. Be safe ! J
@MizzuzMoto8 жыл бұрын
Hi John, yes I would absolutely recommend the Copper Spur UL2 for the following reasons: one of the lightest tents on the market, super easy to set up (and you can pick it up and move it to another location if needed - I actually changed campsites once after setting this up and it was great to just carry the entire thing over to the next site), it has great livability (I hate cramped quarters when it rains), no condensation issues whatsoever. The only thing that bugs me is that I don't like the way the door unzips, I would rather it unzip where the opening doesn't fold into the tent (more of a c-shape opening instead of a n-shape). No issues with downpours and can withstand a good wind storm, enough ventilation for those really hot days too. I've looked at MSR, Nemo, Mtn Hardwear, and a bunch of others and still think this is the best tent for what I'm looking for. Lots of options out there so hope this helps. No matter what you buy, it'll be outdated the following year anyhow :-). I have a Kelty tent that is almost 15 years old that I use for winter camping and don't even think about trading that one in.

Very nice review. You gave me a bunch of great ideas and confirmed a number of my existing choices. I have yet to buy panniers for my 2012 F650GS. Any updates on how the Trekker Outbacks have worked for you and whether or not your fears on their "robustness" have panned out? Given the same financial restrictions, would you make the same choice again?
@MizzuzMoto7 жыл бұрын
Hi! I haven't dropped my bike but a friend of mine dropped his while caught in a rut. He went down going approx. 10 mph and the pannier that took the brunt of the hit broke the cam system to where it no longer locks the panniers to the rack. He has to use lashing straps. I still think these are the best panniers for the money if you don't plan on doing heavy duty off road. If I didn't have to consider costs, I'd go with the Touratechs.

Hi again, quick question. We are thinking of replacing our existing chairs (3 leg stool type) for something more comfortable. How much comfort do you find in the Rei Flex light chair? Can you sit on it for a long stretch?
@MizzuzMoto8 жыл бұрын
The flex chairs are really comfortable but they aren't very sturdy given their lightweight materials. For instance you can sit and lean forward and you'll be fine but be careful when reaching out to the side for anything because you'll likely tip over. There are others that provide more stability but the are heavier. I'm willing to compromise for the lightweight and compact size of the chair. Hope that helps.
