This brings up a really interesting point about philosophy of self . It seems people don't conceive their "self" in a commutative way. In this case that means that both the ghost and the copy will consider the original as a part of themselves, but the original identifies themselves as the ghost only. The criteria to establish one self is not the same if you're thinking about your future self or past self. It seems one perceives their past self based on memory, but their future self based on body continuity. (Though it's obviously more complex 'cause it's philosophy. For example, imagine getting a memory from someone else, you wouldn't think that's really a part of you.) Well a ghost doesn't really have the same body as the living you to be fair. The thought experiment works better if an error makes you not die but the copy still exists. 🤔

This is dealt with by the conception of the soul. The body changes and dies, but the self persists through change as a soul. Making the ghost the actualized continuation of the person. The question of downloading a person is whether it's feasible to capture a soul in a simulated world that we create. Transposing the ethereal into electronic code appears by all rationality to be absurd, and so downloading the soul is logically considered no more than death being accompanied by a copy.

@victzegopterix2 "Soul" is a stand-in for the self (mind/consciousness). There doesn't need to be some kind of supernatural existence to talk about the soul. As much as there is a link between the "soul" and the material body, the existence of conscious experience is nowhere near understood by science at even a basic level. All we can guess is that it's an emergent property of some physical phenomena. However linked, the mind and the brain are not the same thing.

Notably in Star Trek, there's both continuity of consciousness and a lack of in-universe belief that it works that way, so despite being a common meme, Star Trek isn't the example of teleportation death that many think it is. I don't care, honestly. If the concern is that the teleportation doesn't make a good copy of me and I come out crippled, alright. But if I know it's a 1:1 copy of me, I consider that to be myself. Any insistence that my original self died is just a technicality that doesn't affect me in any way. If souls don't exist, it's completely subjective whether you're the same person or not. And if souls do exist, they sorta dictate if you are. Souls are magic, so who says they don't just transfer into the new body? If they don't, if they go to the afterlife instead, alright, I can see why you wouldn't want that, cause then there would actually be a version of you who suffers the consequence.

Honestly probs the most accurate explanation. Same one I use to cover the plot hole in the Dark Water episodes of Doc Who, cuz Missy uploading all of history's dead human consciousness's directly conflicts with previously established canon involving dead characters being brought back like in Torchwood with the Risen Mittens. But all that fits perfectly if people did actually just die and go to the beyond, but Missy's machine just copied their consciousness's, and put those into the 3W Cybermen

That’s why it’s important to make a distinction of whether the consciousness transfer is a continuation of your current perception of reality or if it’s just creating a copy of who you are at that moment then shipping it off
@BonaparteBardithion
@BonaparteBardithion 19 күн бұрын
If we assume a digital consciousness still has free will, technically the copy wouldn't know the difference. The copy's perception of reality is based on your/their previous conception of reality and to them they continue to be you in a digital space. What's important to clarify is that the old "you" will still be there existing in tandem unless you opt to kill it. However, this does also leave the option of uploading yourself to the cloud and possibly checking in on your alternate self from time to time which might be a fun experiment if you're not trying to escape a dystopia or something.

I remember when watching the Black Mirror episode San Junipero, my friend thought that was awesome while I found it terrifying.
