In this video I make a direct comparison of the Oris Divers 65 Bronze or Bico, the Baltic Aquascaphe and the Vostok Amphibia diver.
Let's find which quality is connected to which price and what is the major difference between French, Swiss and Russian watches.

To second Arnaud Meert's comment, the real appeal of the Vostok goes well beyond its aesthetic. Whether it be the wobbly crown or the plexiglass, the Vostok is an example of intention and ingenuity all around. While its price-tag or initial appearance may indicate the contrary, it is likely safe to say that the Vostok is actually the most significant watch of the three from a horological standpoint. Certainly, the build quality can't compare but then again, its perhaps also the only one that can be boiled, frozen, run over by a fiat panda, and still keep ticking. Nonetheless, great video Tim!

Mind also be on record of being a dive watch officially rated at 200m depth but is on record of failing only after 800+m depth. Try that with a more expensive watch, not sure it would be as rugged.

When you compared the Vostok bracelet to an 80’s Seiko I thought you were calling it a “psycho bracelet” and that is probably a fair description.

Now that's what I call a REAL comparison. Great! I would recommend the Vostok. He'll learn more about watches from one of these that you can learn elsewhere; and all for the princely sum of €100. Doesn't matter if he bashes it about a bit, so he should have no fear about 'babying' it. After he's had one of these he can then decide if he wants to take things further. Rock solid 200m WR Even Rolex folk don't laugh at them. A great horology story behind it. Best value anywhere. You can even get most of your back secondhand. Q.E.D. Off memory I think the 'scape' comes from Picards 'Bathyscape' diving bell from the 1960's.

I really enjoy my Vostok (090 case, 'barrel'; transitional, hand-wind only) Yet, IMO you have to have a DIY mindset to enjoy Vostok. Like, the movement works, and lasts, no problems; well except for accuracy: You'll have to regulate it yourself. The slightly janky, low-tech bezel: If it's too tight or too loose, adjust it yourself, or switch it out entirely for a nicer looking one. Acrylic crystal also: They are quite nice; that is as long as you don't mind polishing them every once in a while. And then there are still more upgrade parts available for your Vostok: Nicer crown, fit it yourself, nicer caseback, fit it yourself. (In addition to your common fare optional bracelets and straps) If my Vostok fell off a cliff today, I'd buy a new one tomorrow, and then spend many months getting all the adjustments just right.

I've had my eye on that Baltic for a while. I've been thinking about a more vintage diver that isn't something that's from the Fifty Fathoms/Submariner branch of the family, and it fits the bill in terms of aesthetic. Though now that I checked their website there's now an Aquascaphe in bronze!

Hi Tim. Great upload. Great watches. That Oris is exquisite. The Baltic is a very solid watch with a great vintage design. I adore Vostok, but vintage Vostok is my bag. I have some incredible vintage Vostok watches. 3 in particular are very special: A 1966 Komandirskie with a tonneau case, a 1977 Amphibia that is reminiscent of a Rolex mil-sub design - on its Connery 'Bond' nato I call it my 'if 007 was a double agent' watch!, and finally, a rare military edition Komandirskie with a spider webbed tropical dial that has developed a purplish brown hue in a (uncoated) bronze case. It's a remarkably beautiful piece. I would encourage you or anyone else to look at collecting a few vintage Soviet pieces. They are so inexpensive to buy and maintain and are a heap of fun! Thank-you for another great video.

I bought in to the Vostok hype and purchased an Amphibia about 4 years ago. I was so excited and wore it exclusively for 3 months. At the end of those months, the bracelet gave out, so no problem, I put it on a NATO. Then, another month later, I noticed moisture condensing under the crystal. I took it to my local watchmaker, and it failed the pressure test at only 3 ATM!!!! I still wore it for another couple months, but then it became so wildly inaccurate that I gave up. No more Vostoks for me. However, I liked the look so much I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away. I still keep it in my watch box!!!!

You could replace it for $50 if you are willing to wait 3-4 months for Russia Post which will put it on a ship during the pandemic. That's cheaper than a pressure test or service in a developed country. The extra $16 for UPS Saver delivery within a week is worth it. komandirskie.com/catalog/amfibiya/amfibiya_klassika/

It seems you were very unluky then because I bought 2 Amphibias 9 years ago and wore them a lot. I swam and jumped in water with them in the sea, in rivers, in swiming pools, wore them in +50 celsius and left one outside on my balcony at -35 celsius. One was left on the original bracelet that failed only a month ago (it was the one of the two I wore the most). Precision is not crazy of course at around +30 seconds a day but good enough for the fun I get from watches I bought at the time for 2000 rubles each (back then it was more or less equivalent to 50 euros).

I bought a Bostok for the technical side tho, the movement is actually very interesting and high-tech for the time it was designed. It is incredible they can produce a mechanical movement at that price to this day. And the plexy is intentional on the Bostok, it becomes more water resistant the deeper you dive as the pressure pushes the plexy against the edges. Edit: Sellita aren't such good movements as you say, it is lower in quality, built more cheaply and uses even a cheaper design than the ETA's they clone. Look at some watchmaker reviews of the ETA vs Sellita

I enjoyed your well done comparison. While the Vostok design is unconventional it has advantages particularly when it comes to the design of the case back. The separate ring avoids any shear forces on the case gasket since the case back is pushed into the gasket rather than being turned into it like the other 2 watches. Vostok watches have been described as the AK47s of watches.

That is the nicest way to include bronze to a watch for that effect, nice riveted bracelet look too. I have a Vostok too, in the Ministry case and a turquoise dial, it needed some taming after braking in but it's now very good at 4-5 sec/day. But that rubber strap on the Baltic is a recreation of the Tropic Swiss straps from the 60's - 70's and the taper is traditional.

Thank you for the video and effort. Vostok is the perfect cross between Seiko and Timex. Certainly, Vostok does everything Timex should but does not. Vostok’s functionality and variety of dials are mind-blowing and the font and overall aesthetics of the brand are unique design achievements. I own some Vostok vintage pieces - nothing like them. The mods can be crazy fab. Rolex and everyone imitating them is a big “yawn factor” for me. I love Rolex but only vintage pieces. AD pedantry and marketing ploys coupled with new bling are not appealing. The Baltic is an homage watch but mostly to an age and not just a super brand. There is some resemblance to the mid-50s Rolex Submariner, but the Baltic still maintains a flavor all its own. Achieving the vintage look by using narrower lugs was a brilliant design call. The Baltic offers outstanding period-correct aesthetics. The “weird” narrowing and tapering look at the end of the band that you do not like in the Baltic screams vintage diver. Catch some of the old 1960s diver-like shows and you will see what I mean. As far as anti-reflective coating on the Baltic’s crystal, well, diving watches used plexi for a long time. I sometimes think too much anti-reflection in modern divers is an unduly distracting fingerprint magnet. Note: The real modern improvement to underwater dial visibility is what Sinn does to 1 line of its watches by filling the watch with oil. Arguably, Sinn’s technique is the best anti-glare alternative on the market today. In my opinion, anti-reflection works best as one coat in the crystal’s interior under-girth, but not when also applied to the top portion of the crystal. That compromise works to meet period aesthetics. The Oris? Meh. Flatliner for me. Lots of other divers in that price range are better lookers, in my opinion. Oris has better divers than the choice included in the video.

I've just bought that same Vostok Amphibia. I love them, they are addictive - it's my fifth Vostok and my second Amphibia! One remark: they are not "vintage style" watches, they are original 1967 watches still made today with the same base design! As far as I know, they have just changed the crown and the "Made in Russia" writing on the dial. A bit like the VW Bug indeed: the last ones to be made in Mexico in the early 2000s were almost the same as the first 1945 production model, apart from slight details - with the feeling of driving a 1945 car (or a 1867 watch, in our case). On the other hand, it is well known that Vostok's default bracelets are quite crappy. Fun fact: Vostok makes some decent bracelets (a solid link one and a milanese mesh one), available from their official online shop meranom.com, but they are not offered in the standard configuration. They might as well sell just the watch head, as far as I am concerned. A last remark. If you get a good discount when buying an Oris, you can use the saved money to buy a Vostok or three, and have the best of both worlds! It's a good thing that there are so many choices in the watch world.

Tim, great video but you forgot to mention that the Vostok has a two piece caseback system that uses water pressure for increased water resistance. In other words, the deeper you dive the better the water resistance of the caseback up until the weaker plexiglass breaks. It also exerts a vertical force on the large interior gasket instead of a horizontal force that screw down cases do which will stretch the gasket reducing its life. Western diver watch uses brute strength for water resistance. Vostok uses smart design. However, bracelet and bezel are crap. Most owners replace these with aftermarket pieces.

Highly interesting comparison - and a good presentation. The Oris is rather expensive compared to other Divers of that kind i.e. Steinhart, Marc and son...the Baltic has the "stigma" of being from a comparatively unknown brand and some will perhaps not like the Miyota movement. As for the Vostok one should consider that this is not a retrowatch but a genuine vintage watch dating back to the sixties. Also it is a service watch with no intentions of fashion.

Great video, with two very neat watches. And the vostock. That one us just not for me. I don’t fancy the design. I own a baltic Aquascape and a two oris watches. Not (yet) the divers 65 but an Aquis and a older big crown chrono. So I can relate to your comparison between the baltic and the oris. But i really disagree about the bezel of the Baltic. Mine does not align perfectly with the minute markers. It‘s always half a click off. And compared to the Aquis the bezel has quite some play. In my opinion it cannot compete with the Aquis bezel. I assume here the Aquis and the divers 65 have similar build quality. My positives gor the Baltic: + size: just perfect for me + overall look and style: retro but not dated. A bit like the 50 fathoms + dial (i have the black / silver edition): i like the rough finish and the sandwich build + rubber strap: super comfortable + beads of rice bracelet: well made and interesting look My negatives: - bezel accuracy (play and alignment) - clasp of the bracelet feels very cheap - buckle of ruber strap looks a bit cheap as well - wobbly crown

Great video, Tim! I'm very interested in your thoughts re the difference between the noise levels of the Sellita rotor (bi-directional, I believe) and the Myota (uni-directional). Is it significant? Is the Myota more distracting than the Sellita? I really like the style of the Baltic, especially on the beads of rice bracelet, but haven't ever had the opportunity to examine a watch with a Myota movement. Thanks!
@CasebackWatches
@CasebackWatches 4 жыл бұрын
I was under the impression, that you feel the Myota more. In the Baltic it was quiet but with a heavy rotor. Felt exactly like the Valjoux 7550. I like that feeling in a way but the first day is always a bit strange.

Honestly.. the vostok shouldn’t be bought for more than 80€... 119€ is way more than What new ones are sold from russian sellers on eBay. Anyways.. now that it’s summer i realise why i have so many beater divers in my collection. What a joy to use them carefree at the pool and at the beach without fear of scratches. I do wear oris or steinhart from time to time.. but i wear a lot my seikos, vostok or chinese specials for swimming/underwater

I have all three of these watches in my collection. What you did not mention was that the Oris is only water resistant to 10 bar (100ft) while the other two cheaper watches are 20 bar (200ft) water resistant. The Bostok Amphibian also has a unique and clever caseback design. The wobbly crown is also of a unique and clever clutch design to avoid the watch mechanism from getting damaged should the crown get struck and yes if you buy one, just junk the bracelet as they are pretty well rubbish. l love all my five Vostok's as much as my Rolex Submariner date. I paid €500 for the Baltic when it was launched on Kickstart and it also came with a lovely beads of rice bracelet which I prefer on the watch. The bezel is also Saphire and has the best looking lume glow in the dark of all three watches here with the lume on the Bostok being pretty well rubbish as well. Of all these three brands though, I have a particular love of all things Oris, my favourite Swiss watch brand my favourite being a twenty year old Big Crown Pointer Date. As usual, an excellent video and a great comparison choice.

@@IDKline Sir 10 bar is 101.97 meters of H2O, usually rounded down to 100 meters. 1 bar is just under 10.2 meters of water (mH2O)
@jtee9548
@jtee9548 4 жыл бұрын
Just a small correction, 10 bar = 101.97 meters of water. The Oris watch is claiming a little over 330 feet of water resistance. The other two watches are claiming double that. Since the only way I'm going more than 10 feet under water is if I'm dead, I'd be happy with any water resistance rating on a watch.
