The “Barbie is anti-man” comments are so funny because Barbieland is literally meant to be a reversal of our society… Barbie getting to go on the hero’s journey while the male love interest is sidelined is a clear commentary on our society and the arcs we always see in movies. The only difference is Greta actually took time to develop the Ken lol
@notationmusical Жыл бұрын
For me, I thought Barbieland was just a nod to the animated movies. There, Ken and all the other male characters were constantly pushed to the side while Barbie had a more active role. Greta Gerwig made Ken actually have a character arc.

@PauLtus_B Жыл бұрын
@@purekinema It's good but it's also subject matter so sensitive I'm not eager to recommend to people for whom kids are a sensitive subject. I have to say Aftersun won me over in terms of sad-movie-with-kid.
@purekinema Жыл бұрын
@@PauLtus_B I loved Aftersun too. My second favorite movie from last year after Close.
@PauLtus_B Жыл бұрын
@@purekinema I think they're both outstanding in their type of film. There are a lot of small-scale movies focused on exploring intimate family relationships but I feel most of them just aren't that thematically or emotionally poignant. There is a desire to keep everything quite naturalistic (which is fine) but at the same time it doesn't seem to go many places. I think Close stands out because it does dare to have some strong story dynamics which really drive what the movie is trying to say. Its subject matter is also really sensitive and difficult but I do believe it takes a very nuanced approach and doesn't dissolve into "misery porn". I think most movies that manage to honestly convey how difficult being a child actually is rather than just romanticising it deserve tons of credit. I'm also fond of the soundtrack and some of the best shots of people running (I really loved the tall grass whooshing by). Aftersun is a very interesting comparison because I think it similarly succeeds but it does not have any kind of clear narrative beats to it. It somehow manages to have its ambiguity create a universality in its emotional impact. I generally consider myself to be cine-literate enough to describe pretty well why a movie worked for me but when it came to Aftersun I struggle to talk about it in a more detailed version than a vague sense of emotional dynamics like how I'd talk about a piece of music. But it's also not really what you'd call an abstract movie either, it's incredibly down to earth and both its camera work and dialogue seem very improvisational and naturalistic but if you start analysing it there's so much precision to it. It's a movie which seems so unassuming but hides an absolute masterful example of what film-making can do. ...I'm sorry, I know we started off with Close and I started off gushing more about Aftersun. I am curious to hear more about your thoughts, especially Close, actually.
@purekinema Жыл бұрын
@@PauLtus_B Yes, you definitely touched on something with your comparison. Aftersun is more open for interpretation than Close, like a piece of music as you said, or a short story with symbolism ready to be examined. Close is more like a richly textured novel. Aftersun hit me hard too because it used such patient and subtle storytelling that paid off as it unravels the ache of Calum's depression. Depression is such a common feeling but we rarely see it given the sensitivity and thoughtfulness that is portrayed in Aftersun. All of this is seen through the eyes and memory of his attentive young daughter, and that adds another deep layer of heartbreak. Close, on the other hand, is like the sea, with tumultuous depths beneath the surface, coming in stillness and crashing waves. It has vivid colors (in contrast to the muted tapestry of Aftersun), the warmth in the beginning drawing you into the tender and precious relationship of the two boys. The tearing apart of this relationship is like a throbbing pain, and the shocking turn with Remi in retrospect feels inevitable, like the cost to pay for the crushed intimacy. Leo's grief is as layered and soul-crushing as Calum's depression, but more vulnerable in its invitation to make you feel like he did. If you liked these movies, I'm sure you'd love Hirakazu Koreeda's filmography (and you've probably already seen Shoplifters). I'm glad I've found someone who appreciates these movies like I do, especially Close.

The reason the kens were ignored by barbies because it was symbolism for what has happened in the real life. Women started with almost no rights and they were ignored, but they had to build themselves up. The Kens represent the women in the real world, and the narrator literally said that at the end of the movie. The Kens have to slowly rise up as equals to Barbies in the Barbie World. Anyone who says that Barbie is "anti-men" hasn't seen the whole movie or didn't notice the message it literally tells you.

@@Fl0k5ser No, see, Allan is not muscular like the Kens. He looks like Michael Cera and he's not trying anything to land with a Barbie. Please believe me, everyone outside my manosphere bubbles thinks I'm ridiculous and all my female aquaintances stopped talking to me years ago. Probably because they can't handle how alpha I am... that has to be it right? It has to be. I'm so lonely.

Also it only takes 24 hour for the Ken’s to manipulate the Barbies and they go along with it almost unflinchingly. I think this was Greta saying that it’s easy and almost simpler at times just to not give a crap about social growth and just settle with serving your Ken a beer and listen to him explain The Godfather. I don’t think it condemns it, it just says male/female dynamics are a messy thing and there’s something’s that are right, some that are wrong, and some that are just… are.

Lot of the films I love seem to have imprints and elements from Seconds so it felt like finding a kind of root inspiration to the stuff I love, at least I'd like to think they're inspired but maybe not. Rock Hudson gives a career performance (which on a deeper level contextualizes his own life) and James Wong Howe's cinematography is simply beautiful while pushing the envelope. So I'm glad that actually you loved it and find it weird about comments about men hating it??? Must just be stupid men because it's the kindest film to men I've ever seen. Myself and my best mate had such a beautiful and profound experience watching it and after it we were so full of love for each other. It calls out the parts of men that really eat away at us being unhappy in the kindest and funniest way possible. And then it's also just an immaculately constructed fun comedy that made me laugh so much and the way all of it is made is so considered and artful. So much of it is so unique and special in the art and the sets and the music and the blocking and the dialogue and the costume and the sound.

What I’ve watched in July MI7: 9/10, spectacular entertainment with smart scriptwork and has the best emotional stakes so far, with Tom Cruise delivering maybe the best stuntwork in the world today. Barbie: 7/10, fun, occasionally sharp and witty, entertaining, but just too in-your-face to really be enjoyed. Oppenheimer: 9.5/10, cinematic perfection, devastating performances all round, interweaving storylines which strengthen the movie’s tension and character work, some bomb-drop dialogue, and a lingering sense of dread and wonder which stays with you even after the movie ends. The Irishman: 8/10, just a tad too long, but De Niro and Scorsese work some magic yet again with a slow-burn crime epic which takes you along and invites you to feel for a hitman and mafia bosses, culminating in quite a masterpiece of a climax. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: 4/10, messy, over CGIed movie with little heart, just soulless moving Marvel parts, Paul Rudd the only good thing in this movie, watched it only for Kang. Secret Invasion: 2/10, terrible writing, average direction, acting ranges from over the top to perfection, terrible pacing, boring to watch with no tension, wasted concepts galore, and I’ll say it again, terrible writing. Barry S4: 8/10, much of the fun is gone, but holy shit is everything else as brilliantly dark as ever The Big Short: 7/10, entertaining style that brought me along at a brisk pace with one or two effective emotional beats. Plays up the “look how meta I can be” card a little too much. Nomadland: 7/10, paceless but affecting tale of the drifters in today’s world.

Pretty spot on description of Secret Invasion. To quote a scene of Gordon Ramsay: Ramsay: You've surprised me. Other person: Thank you, I knew you would see my talen-- Ramsay: You've surprised me at how sh*t you are.

Watched a lot of Westerns this past month, my favorites being Silverado (1985) and The Gunfighter (1950) I finally watched Train to Busan (2016) and enjoyed it. Got a lot of Snowpiercer vibes from Train to Busan since both are apocalyptic train rides by South Korean directors with themes on society and morality.

Anytime I hear someone trying to pedal the “Barbie is anti-men” thing I also laugh: It actually brightens my day just a bit, knowing that grown adults were intellectually bested by…The Barbie Movie 😂
@Renaissance464 Жыл бұрын
It makes me sad that sexist movies are still made in 2023 but nobody cares because it's anti-men. Lol. The fact a misandrist movie about matriarchy being better than patriarchy for society can be enjoyed by some people scares me. When I watched it, i thought it looked really good and that the actors did great performances but there's a clear sexist message it's pushing. It's that men shouldn't be in ANY control of society or occupy any important jobs/positions while women should be the ones in absolute control. If only the movie had a message of equality instead of one of misandry, a lot of men would've enjoyed it. Let's say they just got toghether at the end and worked toghether for a better more equal society, while letting Kens have jobs/purpose... I don't know why they had to put Kens as the antogonists and villains of the story to begin with... lmao. Let me go make a Barbie movie about dumb barbies who don't have purpose and take over society in chaos to show just how dumb matriarchy is and that women should never be given power/purpose. Lmao. See how it sounds when you switch the roles of Barbies and Kens. It suddenly becomes sexist when it's shitting on women and matriarchy but if it shits on men and patriarchy, y'all applaud. Lmao.

Few new films for me this month: Elemental: As it only came out in the UK in July that's why I only saw it recently. And I really enjoyed myself. Yeah there were a few clunky moments, and some unsubtle messages, but I still think it was a charming story. Ember & Wade are such likeable protagonists, and their relationship was lovely to see. Also considering I was seeing it in 3D, and the animation is constantly shifting I was amazed how I never felt dizzy or sick at all. Honestly I think I might prefer the movement of animation in this to Across the Spider-verse, no joke, I found that film a bit sickening with the speed of everything. The Super Mario Bros Movie: Thought I'd finally check this out, to see if it was anywhere near as good as people claimed it to be. I was a bit disappointed. Yeah it has some cool easter eggs, and pleasing enough animation (I liked some of the longer action scene shots). But I found it to be pretty hollow in general, didn't feel like it utilised the worlds it set up. And Fred Armisen as Kranky Kong is one of the worst vocal performances I've ever heard. The Barbie Movie: Knew a lot of the plot going in, so I can't say I was at all surprised. Margot Robbie gave a solid performance, especially in the more emotional scenes. Ryan Gosling was fairly funny throughout, but I was getting a bit tired by the end. The sets and costume designs were stellar. And the plot? Eh. I sort of liked it. But at the same time, not really? I can't see anyone agreeing on what the actual message of this film is, and that sounds cool, but at the same time feels like that's a bit of a problem. Like what was the actual point? Also at first I thought America Ferrera's speech was cool, but then it got me thinking: it feels like she's explaining that a woman is only a woman if she's a victim of sexism and rises against it. Sort of a weird message: Woman need to be the victims to push back against societal expectations? Idk maybe I wasn't hearing her right over the sounds of children who were a bit young for the film's tones. (also did they have to say Barbie & Ken so many times?) Not a film, but inspired by one. I saw: Groundhog Day The Musical at The Old Vic Theatre. Absolutely fantastic, so glad I saw it. Takes all the best parts of the film, and easily works it into a musical. I'd listened to the soundtrack plenty of times before, but seeing it gives a ton more context and detail for the songs. Great cast, music, sets, choreography etc. Go see it if you can while it's still on. As for TV, I finished off Secret Invasion, which was so pathetic. Honestly it's baffling how these Disney+ Marvel shows even get made when the writing is so bad. Also got the return of Futurama, which was excellent. Just watched the third episode a few hours ago. All three are solid, with some impressively consistent animation to the past runs. Really enjoying seeing it back on.

Its nice when i have similar opinions on movies as friends, and i kinda get that same feeling here. Its nice when i like a movie as much as I liked Oppenheimer, and you also really enjoyed it. Even more so, its fun disliking something with someone else. I really didn’t like a man called otto, and it is nice to hear I am not alone on that. The portrayal of depression in that movie felt very shallow and almost reductive. I do love Tom Hanks though, and he did as good as I expected him to

it baffles me that they cloned tyrone was not mentioned. I get movie taste is subjective but it's weird every movie review channel I've seen hasn't mentioned or brought up this movie in particular. Chris Stuckmann, Jeremy Jahns, Double Toasted, now Karsten... I get the movie was released the SAME day as Barbenheimer, but also it came out on Netflix... They have time to talk about Glass Onion but keep silent when an all-black movie comes out... not calling out racism with this one, but it is interesting that this movie about conspiracies is being quietly forgotten, even tho it's a Good movie
