I had a woman in my building ominously tell me that my living arrangement (subletting) was "illegal in France" and I was so panicked, haha. But I asked my accommodation agency and they were like "it's a common myth, you're fine." So another thing is that French people will often talk with total confidence on things they actually know little about. It can throw you off but just remember they're not actually an expert. I noticed that phrases like "I think but I'm not sure" or "I'm pretty sure..." or "it might be" are less common.

@6:22 has to be the most important thing in France. I've been living in Paris for the past 10 years. I've discovered that the reason Americans get the cold shoulder is because they never greet. YOU HAVE TO SAY HELLO!!! Even on the subway, bus, trains...If you don't, no one will talk to you after that.

Hey I'm French. Just one thing if you come in France, I understand that you don't want to make awkward mistakes but I did a 2 months exchange in Germany and I just did so much mistakes but now I laugh a lot about this and the people in Germany was so nice with me and everybody find it cute. So no stress about it I'm sure that when the people in France now that you are American or English they will find your small mistakes very cute. They will also be happy that you try to speak our language. Of course there is mean person everywhere but in general we love foreign and their accents! Good luck in France

I am French and I live near Vegas. When we go to visit my family in France, my American husband does NOT kiss on the cheek when he doesn't know, or when it's time to say goodbye. I always have to tell him to do it, it makes me so uncomfortable in front of people to be like his mother reminding him to say hi, for him to finally do it. He knows he is "supposed to", but he just doesn't care. He answers "well, they know I am american, so they will allow me to be weird". Well...actually no. After being married for few years, people know that he knows the French culture. It just makes him look rude. 😭

If he has to be forced to act by your culture and customs doesn’t that me him not doing it is the same thing your family expects of him? He expects the same from them that they’re expecting from him. I've been living in france for 6 years and i refuse to kiss anyone hello. i don't care if people think I'm rude. i didn't force my french ex to shake peoples hands in england. i just let him do what he wants. kissing hello is disgusting especially when you feel someone's lips on your cheek. i hate it.
@cr51883 жыл бұрын
@@Leila2023_ well, I hate hugs. I hate feeling someone entire body squeezed on mine. It is worst than kissing on the cheeks for me. But his family keep hugging me. Am I going to push them away? No, I won't because that would be rude and they don't necessarily know that we don't do that in France, (unless we are close to each other and haven't seen each other for a while) . But I do know the American culture. I feel like the one "who has the knowledge of the other culture" should make an effort. But that's just my opinion

#13: Never, EVER, rely 100% on public transport! OR trains! They have this bad habit of going on strike ever so often, and the more you approach Christmas, the more they go on strike! Strikes are a bloody national sport here in France, and they always choose the moments they know people will need transport the most to do them. Always have a plan B. #14 If you live in Paris. NEVER, ever, ever, ever, EVER, mention the OM football club! and always support the PSG as if it was a religion! :p You have been warned! #15, never dip a cookie on your coffee, that is sacrilege here in France! Tip to learn french, read A LOT of BD's. ( European comics) BD's use simple words that are put into graphical context. At least that is they way I learned. Oh, and watch also a lot of TV. Programs like MOTUS, and La rue de la fortune can help you learn new words. ( they wont tell you what they mean tho', but where would be the fun in that! ;) ).

So saying “merci” on most occasions where you want to thank someone is acceptable however my wife insisted on saying Merci beaucoup to absolutely everyone ( because she liked saying it) the grocery clerk, the receptionist, and complete strangers who had done nothing worthy of thanks at all...most looked at her like she had three heads. In most cases a simple merci will suffice.

Yeah the closing thing is for me the most annoying thing in France! (And I am French) Like I don’t have a car, bus are sketchy here and there’s really not a lot of them here where I live (and I am 45minutes away by foot to town) I can’t always go get groceries if I miss a bus I will have to wait 1 hour or two to get another one... if it’s Sunday I’m fu**** or if it’s Monday sometime or a bit too late. Like the ones I had problems with that we need the most: grocery store and the post office. I’m getting so tired of it I get angry really often about it. We don’t have (or really rare in most town) things opened in the evening or night if you need something)

What about the fifth time??
@c-buck3 жыл бұрын
@@arleneer9677 yes, we can do that for fun with a big smile, or in some specific situations x) Some situations where you can use the "re-bonjour" : - if someone looks at you like: "well, is he/she returning or am I crazy?" - if you know you already saw each other before (in particular: as an introduction for a meeting which was cut for lunch-time for example) - to avoid being considered as rude (for example you come back to a small shop after 15 minutes because you had to take money off of the bank: when you return, the seller knows you already said "bonjour" the first time, so you can't say it again because he would think you are stupid... but the other customers don't know about the situation and may think you're rude if they don't hear your "bonjour". So a small "re-bonjour" could solve the problem) - if you see that the other person doesn't remember that you already saw him/her before, you can say that as a reminder ("re-bonjour, on s'est déjà vus tout à l'heure !") - And if you don't remember if you already said hi to a colleague for example, to avoid being rude, you can clearly ask: "Did we see each other today? Did we already say hi? Yes? Well, "re-bonjour alors" !" But notice that you can't say "re-bonjour" in every situation because it may be a bit weird in some cases. Also, you can't say it as loud as a classic "bonjour" except if it's for fun. And of course, after the 2nd time you see someone, don't do that again x) I never realize those things were so complex for someone who's not used to them 🤦♀️

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
