7 things I wish I knew before becoming an accountant - both studying for the chartered accountancy qualification (CA, CPA, ACA) and my accountancy degree. An accounting career can be quite versatile and there's no set way to have an accounting job and this is basically what I've slowly learned over the last few years!

One thing that I'm worried about getting into accounting is attention to detail. Just the feeling of making mistakes by entering the wrong detail or number on someone's tax return.

Trust me, this will rarely happen and is rarely solely on one person. Before the tax return/accounts are finalised and signed you get another pair of eyes to review them to avoid this issue!

My advice to my son was this: find something you are interested in, learn everything you can about it, and become really good at doing that thing. Becoming an expert on that thing will make others ask for you. I gave him that advice because I am someone who likes to try everything but feel like I’ve wasted time when my career would have taken off. I struggle to stay interested in something because I’ve allowed myself to move on too fast from one thing to another. I can’t even find a job with my psychology degree bc of zero experience. Now I’m looking into either accounting or data analyst.

hi, i went down the degree route so i'm not sure if i can recommend one against the other - however i'd say you definitely don't need a degree to get in the industry. a lot of positions (outside of big 4 too) allow for qualification by experience which would in turn help in getting accredited!

2:15 Relationships, your team, and weakest link, can anyone explain this? Is there a lack of controls in accounting at the sub-process level? Usually there is a technician, an associate, analyst, senior, then manager. Generally speaking. Not all of them require the same sequence but the work is isolated meaning someone still have to do their assigned and specific portions. Coming from mathematics and finance I don’t think accounting is about numbers in fact is probably kindergarten arithmetic the complete opposite. Is more about understanding GAAP, FASB, misrepresentation, fraud, tax laws, and etc. Anyway, I hope everyone works because if the teams were designed without any specific portions, then the most popular member(s) can manipulate others to the work while they do not contribute anything. Had a bad experience once I had one member in the group who was an accounting major and she did not want to do the bookkeeping nor the financial statements every quarter. She was the only one our group that was an accounting major and she was not willing to do her area of expertise. Funny she landed a job way before graduation perhaps because it was accounting and because of her people/Nepotism skills. Which is actually against the law in some states.

@jennabetters
@jennabetters Жыл бұрын
some “mechanical” stuff yes is easy after training. Even a high schooler can punch numbers into a software. But the schooling is necessary to understand the “why” behind it. After an internship and a year of full-time work, getting through your first tax season or audit season is massively satisfying, because at that point, you really start to see the “book work” from school coming together.

When you say exams what do you mean? Like do you mean when you do an apprenticeship or study at university for accounting you have exams or do you mean at a normal accounting job they give you exams constantly as if you were at school or smth?

anyone can do it , college is a business. Your degree only gives the employer an idea of what you have accomplished and. what you know. However you can still pursuade an employer with all the certificates and the enthusiasm you got to have this career and the opportunity. INTERVIEW is the way you will get this job

Hey, so the block of time we’d have off included the exam! So e.g. in a 6 week block - I had classes the first 4-5 weeks, then a week off classes to study, and then the week of exams. But you’re right the block length varies according to which level you do
