I feel like so many kids don’t actually get to explore career options before college, like shouldn’t high school prepare for that?

My thoughts exactly, like what is the point of high school if it doesn't prepare you for college?

Right, we should be more like England to be fair. Around the age of 16 I believe the kids go to 'college' (more or less high school) but they truly go in with trying to find a career path for the students to specialize in. I'm American and don't know much about the process but that they try to prepare the students for a future career path to follow.

the replies to this argument are so so important, more people need to recognize this. there’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing a career based on financial stability. of course it might not be ideal, but sometimes it’s necessary. passion in a career is a privilege

I don't think this is a topic that undergrads should address yet. I felt the same way when I was 18, "Money doesn't matter, I'm going to do what I love." Let me just tell you all that it sucks. $30k salary is NOT as much money as I thought it was when I was 18. I actually don't even get that much after taxes, student loan payments, and everything else that comes out of my check before I even see it. I never realized how much bills cost? Like it's $80/month just to have an internet connection? And at the end of the day, doing what I THOUGHT I loved every day for some company is just draining. I am very restricted creatively because I'm working for someone else. I'm not very happy anymore. I had interest in other majors or topics that I didn't pursue and I regret not picking one that would've made me more money. It was a very expensive mistake to learn and I feel like I can't go back to college now because I'm already so far in debt from the first time.
@SM-gt9vg
@SM-gt9vg 4 жыл бұрын
Moral of the story: you may end up hating what you love and if you're going to hate your job anyway, it may as well be one that pays decent wages. That way you can afford to enjoy your time off and go on vacations, rather than being too poor to do anything but sit at home and sulk. Not to say you shouldn't follow your passions, but go ahead and go to school for nursing instead of art so if your painting career fails miserably, you have this really useful degree to fall back on and not an art degree. 🤷‍♀️

hengineer woah. I guess it is a privileged thing to say. But trust me, I come from a home where neither “mommy and daddy work.” But I understood it as: “money doesn’t make you happy/ buy happiness.” Of course people need money. Everyone needs money to get their basic human needs met. Yes, achieving and getting a high paying job must seem great unless you end up unhappy. It’s all devils advocate because you want to be happy but salary might not be in your favor. Or the salary is there but be super unhappy. But thank you for expressing your view on it, because it does sound like a privileged thing to say.

“Don’t pick a major just because it makes money.” Ooofff I went though this! I knew I wanted to psychology cause I saw myself being a councelor and that of my aunt’s experience as a psychologist. However I had family try to take me out of it and that I need to pick a major that gets me a job and money...even if it didn’t make me happy or have passion for it. I choose nursing (I know I want to be in healthcare) and well that didn’t work out great for me (mental breakdown stress and anxiety) and got the heck out and put my foot down and made sure I got back to psychology. I know that I need to get my master’s to be certified and I’m ok with that plus I’m exploring other fields as backups or to see if there are other professions that also interest me since I’ve graduated last year.

So many ppl do psychology so it’s over saturated. My brother got his masters and it took him half a year to even try and find a place to work at, and once he did he was mistreated and ignored bc so many other ppl were willing to work for less. It’s very very hard to get a job, which is why ppl don’t recommend it but good luck!!

@Araceli From Wii sports club Hey I think it depends of the type of field in psychology and it def when networking and getting experience! Plus you gotta keep a positive attitude (I try to keep this in mind that God has a plan for me and I will get there as long as I also put the work in) even in these current trying times. I believe there will be a demand and need of psychologist in the future given the currently global situation we are in. metal health is very important as much as physical health!

I can relate to this so much. I just made a whole existential rant on my channel because the second quarantine hit, I had a lot of time to think about all of my life choices. This is such a good perspective, I feel like at 17 (when I was choosing my university degree) I did not have the hindsight to really know what I wanted to do. And it's crazy that young people are under such intense pressure where money and literally their future is on the line. Anyway, incredible video! :)

@@chi2om Great question! So I actually ended up going into Media Production. I found it to be a great compromise where you could use your creativity but also learn a lot of practical skills. At the time though, I remember thinking about many different paths (law, english, teaching, etc) and I could have very easily ended up in one of those...where I think now I'd be unhappy. I still don't know if I chose right, and it's honestly really hard to say. But yeah :) My degree ended up being pretty fulfilling but I still wonder what my life would look like if I did something else.

I know everyone’s saying “don’t do it for the money” And this is true to *some point*. At the end you if you want to be happy you need a way of earning money. Once you find a stable job THEN you can look into things that actually make you happy. Don’t always concentrate on what make you happy. Unless the thing that makes you happy also make you money. Then you hit the jackpot! But just research and find options that you will learn to love. But idk that’s just me.

Oshali Rajapakse I think it’s more having a plan on what to do with your degree in my opinion. If you love art for example, then find out what an art degree can get you job wise or find out other mini subjects (I have no idea what their called since I don’t live in America, I want to say minors but I’m not sure?) which could give you more opportunities to give you a good job before applying for college. I think the reason why people may become unemployed after college or uni is because they don’t know what to do with their degree, if some people have a plan before going in I think more people could get a job easier. However, I do agree with you if the person wanted to do a degree in something like drama which is a very hard career to get in. I do also think that having a job through college is something that is good and it makes my life a lot easier as well.

I feel like you’re less likely to enjoy something if you feel like you’re not receiving adequate reward or something to show for your hard work.

I've bared with it for almost a year now because i'm afraid that i could not find other jobs and my life would be completely destroyed. like you said "if you feel like it isn't for you, you don't have to continue. I’m about to finish my junior year of college too but in Mexico and sadly colleges and universities here are WAY different than they are in the states, I mean college for us is just like attending high school, almost everyone stays in their hometown and the “living in campus” thing does not exist, also credits are managed differently here cause we do have the credit here, but our “classplan” is put by the school and we have to take the classes we were told we were gonna have at the beginning of the career, also we are not that passionate about our school sports cause the sports teams barely exist. There are a lot of differences but the biggest one I think is the money you pay for college, here’s very very cheap compared to USA. I just wanted to let y’all know a few differences I found but I still love it and I still watch every college related video of yours💕 Greetings from Juarez,Mexico border with El Paso, TX I’m a real one ❤️❤️❤️

Just get the degree and from there you can shape your path the way you want. I had interviews for engineering jobs and offers of fully paid courses with my marketing degree just because I said in the application that I am willing to learn new skills.

i can relate SO HARD. i wanted to do nursing so bad, but literally my high school advisor told me that i wasn't smart enough to get into the nursing program in my hometown and that nursing was so much worse than PA or med school so i should apply to my state school and do PA or MD for the money and status. so i did that, AND I WAS MISERABLE. went home every weekend, missed my family so much, hated my classes, everything was terrible. so i decided to try and transfer into the original nursing program that i "wasn't good enough to get into" and i got in. now im living in an apartment with my boyfriend 10 minutes away from my parents and commuting to an amazing nursing program and I LOVE IT and im so unbelievably happy. moral of the story: LISTEN TO HANNAH, if you are passionate about something GO FOR IT, don't listen to what other people say only you know what you are capable of, and if you think you can do it then YOU CAN DO IT. you got this :)

I'm a 15 years old student, a senior high- basically I'm still in high school- grade 11 student this year and I told you I had a hard time about choosing what strand I will take. At first I decided to take the strand Home economics because I want to have a job after I graduated senior high school BUT I changed my mind after seeing the subjects-yes, because I hate cooking- that's why I changed strand but I had a hard time AGAIN because I was pressured because I just want to tell you, all of my friends already know what strand they will take because they already know what they want in the future while me, still undecided. I Don't know what's my dream, because literally I don't know what I want in the future, don't know what I'm passionate about because when I was in junior high I didn't participate to any club activities-I didn't explore things- f*ck me for being shy all the time. And just a week ago I asked my friend for an advice and It kinda help me to know what I lovee (yes lovee) I Love history and sometimes I dream to be a historian because I saw a historian in the tv and I was just like "WOW! That is so cool, he knows what happens in a particular time, the dates etc." And that made me decide what to take- HUMMS- but I'm nervous because being a humms student means you have to be confident because being shy in that strand will not gonna take you anywhere. So yeah wish me luck this year HAHAHAHA

I'm graduating from university this week and this is all so true. I would have done so many things differently in hindsight. I went in as a Computer Science major, because felt I had to major in something that would be profitable and viewed as challenging. I was constantly told I shouldn't bother majoring in something I liked, because I would eventually hate whatever job I ended up doing after working for a while and jobs are there just to make money anyway. I was miserable and had no friends during my first years and made the decision to transfer programs spring semester of my sophomore year. Now I actually enjoy what I'm doing and have a few friends that I've met in the past year and a half. Just do what you care about in the first place and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You will just end up wishing you had listened to yourself sooner and regret not being able to know the people in your program as long as you could have (especially when a global pandemic occurs and you miss out on a whole semester of experiences, ~sad Class of 2020 alert~). I never attended a single football game or party, it just wasn't for me, but I finally figured out what I wanted to do with my life and put my passion into that. I was also fortunate enough to meet a few wonderful people along the way.

August will mark 50 years for me at a Big 12 university, as an undergrad, grad student and working in Student Life in various roles. First, you're an outstanding communicator. You emphasized choosing a major for the right reasons... not money. It's so important for new college students to know that. It's passion for your major that will lead to success in your education, and in your chosen field. Along with this, I believe, and research backs it up, that involvement with other students and organizations, living groups, athletics, intramurals, etc. has an important part in students staying in school and graduating. But... there needs to be balance and time management. I just wanted to compliment you on a very useful video. Have a great senior year!

Watching your video was a real eye opener. Im just a freshman and having panic attacks weekly and an overwhelming feeling to jump off of a cliff everytime I get stressed because I don't know what I'm doing. My heart was so set on one thing and when I realized that thing isn't going to work out for me I have no clue what my purpose is there. I get dizzy and a bunch of headaches because of it. But I think I want to be something else. Now its apparent that I don't want to be at that school period. Im also not making friends and failing academically which is probably because I don't feel passionate about what Im doing. Everyone expects so much and what I want to do doesn't pay that good either. But your advice really helps and I think I know what decision Im going to make from here onward. Im just glad im not the only one who feels like this.

I think I have social anxiety but I enjoy making friends and such. I just always feel like people are looking at me whenever I’m alone somewhere. In terms of making friends, this girl I met whose going to my university made me join a huge GroupMe of the college I’m going to and I’ve met a small group of cool people tbh. I know 3 people that are going to my university, but I did randomly hit up other black girls on Instagram (i’m going to a PWI) and it was SUPER awkward because I didn’t feel like I clicked with some of them, just got mad weird vibes, and a lot of them didn’t continue the conversation which is annoying asl cause it’s like we’re the minority on campus. Can’t we all just be friends? BUT, I ended up meeting some girls in this GroupMe for minority students going to my university and I ended up becoming an admin (lmao). I really wanna see the girls and just vibe with them. Also, It’s ok I didn’t get close with some people because some people are just super boring anyways, but it’s easier for me to make friends in person 😭

I liked it, but when I transferred schools due to health reasons, i saw so many other majors that could be interesting and half a quarter life crisis. I'm also a very anxious person, and taking the gamble of staying in psych and hoping to get into a psych PhD was making me crazy, so I changed to education, then to business, all within a few weeks before restarting school after taking a break for my health. I thought of going into education or business because those are safer choices. I know I could have still been happy going into those paths, but there was still this feeling in my gut that told me it wasn't quite right. Things were crazy! But after a while I decided that maybe I should go back to psych, but then I realized that Social Work exists, and where I live like 90% of jobs for people who are social workers only require a bachelor's of social work (and you also get the title after a B.S.W. too) and things kinda started slowly clicking... I could do what I wanted, still feel safe, and if I ever wanted to be a psychotherapist, where I live, I could still do it with some more studying after my B.S.W. It was a wild ride, so I can definitely relate!! love your videos :D
