Tips for moving to London for university! AKA What I wish I knew before moving to London.
There are so many things to know, this video could be 3 hours long, BUT I tried to think of some things I think would be helpful. This is all from my personal experience as an American postgraduate student who just recently moved to London. Hopefully, you find this information useful!
Also, if you have any questions or want me to make a video about something, please let me know!

If you like your US phone number, and don’t want to give it up, you can “park” it for a minimal fee with some cool companies. So you can always revive it in worst case scenario like forgetting to change your 2 factor settings. And with your Oyster card, even though you don’t have a commuter card, it does max out on a day so you don’t pay more than a daily pass would cost.

I used HSBC when I was in England. HSBC has banks all over the world and I was able to keep my account when I moved back to the US (of course here in the States the accounts were in dollars had to be in US dollars). Schwab offers some very flexible banking options. When I lived in England I usually tried to avoid changing money (from dollars to pounds) at the end of the month because that is when you usually got the worst exchange rate because Americans over there had to pay monthly bills in pounds (eg, rent).

Great video, but probably should have mentioned that Monzo is not actually a back per se (as in comparison with HSBC for example). They don't have branches or anything like that, and also there are certain things that you can't do e.g get a credit card. Not sure about Sterling. Great video though, London is amazing!

So you talk about budgeting did you budget roughly how much you would need for your time there or are you doing small side jobs or a student job in order to have money ?

Hi, sorry for the delay getting back to you! I pretty much added up the cost of my tuition and housing with a rough estimate of my normal cost of living for the amount of time I’ll be in school. I saved up for two and a half years and I’m working part-time at my school for some extra money as well. I also ended up needing to take a student loan out as well. University here is definitely more affordable than in the states, but it’s still a lot and London is really expensive. Hope that helps a bit!

The word is "exorbitant", young lady. Trust me, after being in London for a year, that word will be engraved upon your soul. Try to keep smiling through this gloomy season because the next 7-8 weeks are always the worst. Best wishes.........................................the ancient Englishman.
