Mom of four here (graduated two, two to go). Just wanted to say that you are absolutely correct when it comes to math! We had our high schoolers take Alg 1, Geometry, and then Personal Finance (Dave Ramsey’s online course for homeschoolers). During their senior year, they didn’t have any math. And guess what? They’re both fully financially dependable with zero debt. They paid cash for their cars, don’t have credit cards, and have never missed a cell phone, insurance, or any other bill payment! They have full time jobs and serve heavily in different ministries at church. ❤

So happy to hear you had that experience! Thanks so much for sharing and for the encouragement to the rest of us 😊

My husband and I made the decision to include our children when we have our personal financial conversations. They help me make a weekly meal plan with a budget and shop. When they get older we will include them in our monthly bills and income discussions. I think the more we expose them to real finance the better. I also think that teaching my children about delayed gratification is a key component in buying only what you can afford.

Isaac Watts' book on Logic is meant for 9th graders, but more than 200 years ago. I believe most adults would struggle through it today. Very good challenge for high schoolers! Highly recommend for all homeschools. Also, a good introduction to Logic is the Fallacy Detective book.

O I’m sure they would! Yes we did fallacy detective this year…will be doing the second one next year

Have you ever considered Classical Conversations for your kids?! I'm five mins in your video and all you are talking about is basically what CC does! My oldest is starting Challenge 1 and younger is going into Ch A. Ch A starts at 7th grade. It is a phenomenal program that teaches kids HOW to think, not what to think. Your comment at 6:25 is CC!!! It hits on all these skills kids are sorely lacking in our society today.

you know, i checked it out briefly years ago when I first started homeschooling but honestly haven't looked too much into it after that. Maybe it's worth circling back to🤔

Excellent. I am using Heart of Dakota and it covers all these areas. Makes it all easy for me and I KNOW I am not missing anything. We are in a co op too that has classes like Dave Ramsey's courses as well, current events, etc.

Not Consumed just came out with Consumer math. Teaches life lessons besides the math aspects.

I didn't realize that. I thought it was just Bible studies/devotionals. That's really cool 😊

Yes on the math and such! I pressured myself so much in school and went way beyond what I needed. The time I could have put into other things and actual life skills. 😢

We use a writing curriculum called Writing and Rhetoric. I highly recommend it. I didn’t start using until recently and my kids are older. Age 10 and 13. I started my 10 year old in the first book and my 13 year old in book 7(I think) out of 11 total.

I’m starting that with my 10 year old twins this fall. I’m hoping we love it too.

I looked into that for our writing curriculum this year and heavily considered it!

Also in the camp of "I learned government/economics definitions to pass the tests & wish I'd learned something useful like budgeting, filing taxes, how to handle/improve credit scores, etc." Can definitely agree with a solid foundation to set the kiddos up for options in life. As someone with a BS in Biology & MS in Lab Sciences, all of the physics & calculus I did take in HS/college has helped me...zero...social skills seem to be falling more & more towards "social media skills" vs. human to human skills...

I’m sure you have heard of Critical Thinking Company, but last night I was really taking a deep dive through their website and they have so many more resources than I realized, especially when it comes to the area of critically evaluating information. They have a book called You Decide that goes through the first 8 amendments and takes a look at actual Supreme Court cases and how they interpreted and applied the constitution and asks students to consider whether they would have come to the same conclusions. I’m thinking of buying to talk through together with my 5th and 7th grader.

Thanks so much. One thing I will say is that you want your children to be able to defend their faith via Apologetics, an understanding of physics is pretty necessary. I’d also recommend not skipping statistics if you want your kids to be able to discern truth as an adult.
