Hey Cortezi, I just watched this vid again. I see you like Montbell like I do. Sweet. Hey I like the sound of your Patagonia rain shell - Storm racer - tricot lining sounds really soft on skin, I will have to check it out in my local Sydney Patagonia store. Suggestion - To keep your rain shell breathing its best, its best to wash it regularly about the same as would wash a pair of well worn jeans - every couple of weeks if you are using them a lot. The idea is that the micro-porous holes which allow passing through of water vapour molecules (i.e. the breathing) get clogged up pretty fast with body oils and sweat from the inside and grime and dirt from the outside. So good regular washing cleans them out and keep it breathing at its best. Also washing it in a specialist wash treatment product (for waterproof breathable fabrics) and then popping the jacket in the dryer on low heat for 10 mins will magically restore the water repellency (DWR) of the outside layer again by realigning the hydrophobic nylon threads and have them all pointing outward together again - which results in an effective continuous statically charged DWR barrier which repels water droplets (which also have the same charge, thus they repel). On the subject of "Coolibar" shirts, my wife started wearing them due to skin cancer and requires long sleeves and did I mention we live in Florida, about 20 minutes from the beaches. She absolutely loves them! You are spot on with the sizing..but the breathability and the SPF protection is great. They usually are pricey, and haven't seen them in stores. One might say they are comparable to Colombia brand styles. Good return policy as well. They do have alot of different items too. Google for the website and browse, you'll love it!

Stone grey! And I didn’t have my montbell puffy until I got to Washington. I wish I had it for the Sierra cuz what I had at the time was too heavy/warm for the weather in the Sierra. The montbell puffy is my favorite puffy for hiking in general. I use it for everything, even Colorado 14ers in winter!

Hi thank you. I also loved the houdini pants on my thru hike.... they dry incredibly fast and helped guard against bugs. From head to toe I have a very simular kit ... I did use merino for shirts and buff.... icebreaker and ibex. And Terramar quick dry silk for base layers super light....

If you like the Lone Peaks, you should try the Olympus. They are their max padding shoe. I wore the Lone Peaks from GA thru VA, then switched to the Olympus. I will never go back to any other shoe for hiking. They do take a few days to get used to because the padding makes you feel higher than normal. But you do get used to it. I love that Puffy, but damn it's expensive. And I've got an Enlightened quilt as well. But I hate the feel of it. Kind of suprised you liked yours. Very plasticy feeling. There is nothing like experience when it comes to reviewing clothing/gear. You are doing a great job. What year was your Patagonia Nano Air? The air permeability changes, sometimes, from one year to the next in outerwear. You mentioned appreciating more cushioning in the foot from your socks. Since your feet have adapted to the Lone Peaks, you may want to look into the Altra, Olympus. I really like mine over my various versions of Lone Peaks. Food for thought.

I suspect you are rather dialed in but as you entertain possibility, here are some well intended thoughts. Did a little research for your consideration moving forward: The Patagonia Nano Air Hoody at 60g/m^2 is listed at 40 cfm and Nano Air Hoody Ligth at 40g/M^2 is listed at 70 cfm, so at the expense of a little less insulation you get more air permeability. Also read some compelling information regarding a vest in place of a jacket in terms of warmth to weight ratios. Food for thought. Ref Olympus: I use Polypro sock liners at .6 oz and my Darn Toughs are at 3 oz a pair. This equates to 10 pair of Polypro liners (which dry really fast), for every two pair of Darn Tough. Use two pair of Polypro and drop some weight. For more warmth, I use a plastic bag over the Polypro socks. The softer cushioning on the Olympus and thinner socks, helps with the ground feedback.

Hi :) is taking the Patagonia nano air a really bad idea for the pct? I know you said it was to warm. I read a lot of positive reviews about the jacket and how it’s supposed to breath well but you actually took it to the pct and I was wondering if it was to warm all the time? And was it even to warm at night? And the Sierra? I can’t buy it where I live, and can’t try it on in the store to test it :( will have to buy it online first.. your answer would really help :) oh and what size (men’s/women’s)did you buy?

my main thing with the nano air is it was too bulky and not compressible enough in my pack (even in my larger pack the HMG 2400). it was super cozy and comfy though at night. for hiking, it was very warm. I'm rocking the micro puff right now and love it. for the nano air I had the women's small. it was true to size maybe even on the larger side. (I like my thruhiking puffies tight lol).

I have always used merino wool for my clothing because of its odor resistance but I'm considering buying a hiking shirt like Patagonia Sun Stretch but I'm a bit hesitant. Synthetic baselayers smell like death but do synthetic hiking shirts gather that smell? Especially when I will have a merino wool t-shirt under it.

I'd say it was warm enough for most of the PCT. Maybe consider carrying a mid layer for early desert and late Washington.

the montbell breathes really well. the storm racer breathes really well in comparison to my patagonia torrent shell which does have pit zips. and for it being so thin, it actually keeps you significantly warm against crazy wind gusts. hope that helps.

Thanks for the review. I've heard good things about Montbelle gear. Looking forward to the shoe review, especially about how to,break in your feet/legs with the Altra Lonepeaks. Did you have any trouble with walking on rocks and the sole of the Altra's being too thin to protect the bottom of your feet? Altras come with a really nice lightweight rock place that you can insert under the insole to help with rocky/sharp areas. The soles of the shoe are pretty soft & can get poked, but putting the rock plate in is super helpful & I've found that it alleviates almost all poking!

Matthew Burt as i mentioned in the video, I hiked in the co Rockies in December (20-30 degree temps, colder when hit w wind gusts) and climbed a 14er w it in December as well (mt. bierstadt, temps on the teens and lower w wind gusts). I had to pair it w a wind/rain jacket (Patagonia storm racer) on bierstadt once we got to the summit cuz of the crazy wind gusts but yeah. Solid piece of gear.

lZLlBElV X it held up pretty good and dries quick. But I can count the number of times it rained on the PCT w one hand. Had a pretty heavy rain storm early in the desert, a couple days in NorCal. And the last couple days in Washington.

Great video. I don't usually hike with my puffy, wait till I'm at camp, I find down keeps you warmer, is the lightest and compresses the best so would really miss it. but having a more water resistant puffy would be nice, have to look at the montbell UL

want to get one of those coolibar shirts - found via your link, but let me ask: 1) it looks as if it may be stretchy, is it? 2) you said it is sized larger than normal. I absolutely can't stand the tight fit of women's shirts, jackets etc (have some neuro problem with tight things) so always buy a men's XL. A W's XL would be fine except for the tight pits. How would you rank the pits on this shirt compared to most W's shirts? I am thinking of getting the W's XXL even if too big just for mor pit space as they don't seem to sell it in men's. Thanks so much! 3) You also said it is a soft fabric - that would be great for my sensitive skin!

Robin J Peregrine-White it’s not a stretchy shirt. I would say as far as size goes, it feels one size larger than it really is. So my small feels like a medium, etc. Pits have a good amount of room. And you didn’t ask for this but cheat area is generous too. Also note that the Coolibar no longer makes the EXACT model I wore on the trail (mine doesn’t have any pockets in the chest but now they make it w/ one pocket in the chest). And yeah the texture is divine! 👍

"haven't wash the jacket". Wash your rain jacket from time to time actually help to keep it last longer. Prob should also give it another coat of DWR.

Super ! Have you (or some else) tried Patagonia Micro Puff ? It's the Puffy which seems similar to your Montbell in Patagonia. Here in Europe (France) not easy to get Montbell. The Patagonia could be a good equivalent according to you (or someone who tested it) ?

they are different textures on the outside ( I love the Montbell fabric feel rather than plastic bag feel) but other than that Patagonia should be fine. it'll also be a lot lighter and more compressable.

Hi, is your lightweight base layer a Montbell Zeo Line shirt? I am wanting to combine my everday hiking and base layer shirt and wondering if this would fit the bill? When cold I would layer with an ultralight Polartec Fleece, my puffy, and , a rain shell if needed. I was trying to avoid carrying a base layer and a hiking shirt as I will also be carrying my fleece shirt. Any suggestions?

what id do is ditch the fleece. I'd have a comfortable airy hiking shirt, the base layer (most likely for sleep), a puffy for cold nights and early mornings, and lightweight rain/wind shell.

I had Patagonia base layer pants for the whole desert and Sierra. then I shipped them back home and just stuck with a pair of Patagonia Houdini pants (wind pants) all the way to Canada. I had a long sleeve base layer for the whole trail except the last few weeks before Canada. (wish I did have the shirt towards the end cuz it got really cold and everything was wet (I was wearing my puffy to sleep but it was also wet cuz I had to use it while hiking and it would snow and rain).

I agree with some of the other comments. Most of your videos are very very quiet on my phone and my computer. Your voice starts off loud and tends to trail off/become quite hard to hear. The music tends to distract from your message, especially when it is hard to hear as it is.
