There was a scientist that was accidentally hit with a direct blast of near-light speed atoms from a particle accelerator, he survived basically having a 2mm hole punched through him, he said he saw a blinding light but felt nothing when it happened. Nope. It means he probably did, but most viewers are not so interested in knowing it. The calculation is actually quite simple, it's the standard equation for kinetic energy that everyone learns in high school, it's just elevated to really high numbers because of the velocity. The kinetic energy for a 3 grams needle travelling at the speed of light would be 135 Tera-Joules, compared to the Fat Man bomb with 84 Tera-Joules. So the comparison is accurate enough. Extremely simple formula...

There are no current hard materials, needles, rocks, metals or otherwise that could withstand that speed for any length of time. So, the question is "React to what?" The object (probably an asteroid) will not be traveling at the speed of light or even close to it but at the first speed - 60,00 mph. An object and speed we can deal with now.
