I think its their colonies in africa that screw up the AI, it gives them the option to run across large amount of ground vs standing in place, and the AI doesn't seem to weigh home territory vs the overseas ones causing it to just loose tons of troops in africa. britain doesn't quite have this problem because they broke the raj and its other territories off into their own countries

Looking at where France held in the fails and pushed in the final game, it is this. France so is trying to defend territories in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and south east Asia. Not only does this make them split their force, but the lines changing on these fronts causes the ai to reorganize its lines, pulling troops from Europe usually to head to one of the other places. This is why there suddenly is a breach and just complete fumble of their line of forts. The ai just straight up cannot handle the front lines against 3-5 different countries in Europe as well as several more across the world. The ai needs to be programmed to not reorganize a certain amount of infantry on the front line so they won’t pack up and leave a gap as they walk off to the other side of the globe.

France is covered in moutain on all side, and the only place it isn't there are rivers, and two focus that put forts on two frontiers. Without a sucky French AI historical games wouldn't stay historical for long. You can also put the republicain spain in that bag of "crappy AI by design".

Shadow Wolf The ai tends to guard its own territories or those that have been occupied and given to them to control. Sometimes they do venture to distant front lines but less likely if they have to get there by sea (something to do with making sure the ai doesn't get its entire army sunk by enemy fleets?). It really isn't Britain that is coded to be this way. Hard to tell if I've ever seen an island nation or one from the Americas that sent non expeditionary non volunteer non naval invasion troops to France.

The French army wasn't prepared at the time (and also not as compitent) so they probably still would've left the ardennes not really that defended (maybe because they would think it didn't need it or maybe they just don't have enough men for true defense because trying to fit your army through the entire Belgian / German-French border wouldn't be easy. Also most people would probably think that being conscripted to stay at a fort was pointless so less men. So Hitler might've ended up going through belgium and around the Maginot like in real life except it would take longer. But even if the Blitzkrieg didn't happen a French invasion would've probably happened He could've ordered an invasion of Belgium and used he could've used Italy , depending on if France built more forts on that border too. Maybe the French politcal parties would get angry due to conscription for forts and all the money that forts require and maybe a reveloution? Bascially France at the time was probably doomed to fail , African colonies , incompitence , politcal problems , German war machine and all that stuff isn't easy to handle and considering how long it took me to write out the scenarios where France still loses i think it's easy to see France could lose easily. France now or later in the war could maybe hold off against the Nazis but even now Democratic Germany is still a European power even though they lost and were punished in two major wars and suffered a split and they're even using the French-German steel thingy (i forgot the name) to gain even more power in Europe even though the main reason was to constrain Germany, but considering NATO and the UN exist a world war probably isn't gonna happen with Germany , so that's nice. Sorry for the long comment and i made a lot of assumtions about Germany and in a world where France can extend the Maginot they might be able to easily win against the Germans but i don't know. I also assumed Hitler wouldn't be smart enough to pull off a move so large as a mass invasion of Belgium and around the Maginot in Italy and a push through the ardennes

If I recall, France has an AI modifier for preferring defense. However, france has land all over the world and the AI will protect ALL of it equally. Free France doesnt have this modifier, so they tend to stay within Core land

you would need to send almost all hoi4 videos then. hoi4 is so bad, incredible. i actually stopped playing hoi4 because of the bad mechanics (paratroops, naval invasions, naval combat, tank warfare, forts, or weird air warfare) and the horrible ai. some time ago i've made a simple ai test. german ai is bad at repairing/fitting units/provinces (at some point it uses all its industry to repair provinces). and the other ai's do not care about the war economy policy when it's available to them, and there's so much more... either you play hoi4 in multiplayer or leave it

Well, no actually. That’s (almost) entirely wrong. Yes, the Germans declared on the Danes first (April 9, 1940) but they capitulated literally six hours after German troops crossed the border. The war with France on the other hand began later (May 10, 1940), but they lasted more than a month (all the way until June 25 the same year). Please excuse me if I’ve got anything about this wrong.

Boy... On paper France is strong as it is. I know that when I played previous versions of HoI I kicked butt with them. Which really got me questioning what sort of people they had in changer in France during the start of the war in real life. (As well as seeing some of the account on how superior, yes, you heard me, superior french tanks where to Germans ones.) Maybe it is actually accurate to history. Maybe France just had a really bad AI running everything at the start of the war... Cythil the french tanks had some flaw (mainly undercrewd) wich would make them better (in tank vs tank) than the panzer 2, but I would say the panzer 3 and 4 was at leest on par. Regarding why france died in ww2, as I understand france basicly had PTSD from ww1. They also had unrest with commis wanting communism. And a most troops were conscripts with wariyng will to fight. They also soread out ther superior numbers of tanks, whilst the germans focused them in spearheads wich allowed them to blitz thru the arden and thus to the channel and paris. And then I think some frenchmen (higher upps) "sold out france" to the germans and establishe vichy france

Of course there where real reason to why France lost. Just that some of the reason given like there tanks sucked is not really valid reasons (as they where good tanks. Even if they had flaws to) And of course it was a combination of factors. But anyone who have played Hearts of Iron series will likely wonder at least a bit about how poorly manage there war effort was considering is not that hard to actually put up a fight with them. In one of my games I did not only steamroll Germany and Italy. I actually manage to take over USA after they declared war on me for my interventions in South America (I was playing world police in that game which apparently ticked of the Americans.) Of course after having defeated the Axis it is maybe not that odd that I would have the resource to take on USA (as well as me being a part of the allies which helped) But I do think that France could actually have beaten the Germans during the early days of WWII had they had the right management and played there cards right. Maybe not if you replaced the leadership on the same day that Germany invaded Poland. But even so France should not have been such a pushover as it was.

The reason France lost to the Germans was that they came from the french's under defended backside. Turns out the impenetrable mountains in Belgium wasn't impenetrable and France had their best troops cut off from the rest of France when the mountains were breached as they were defending the Belgium land beside the mountains.

Cythil France lacked a lot of equipment and aircraft due to them spending insane amounts of money on the Maginot line, and don't foget the British also didn't think German tanks could move through the ardenne.

I think the main issue with this is that there is too many forts. Generic AI prioritise defending forts, and every provence having a for would lead to the AI trying to defend all forts which spreads the troops very thin. If you went into the game as france, selected a general and selected the whole of france to be defended, you would end up with a very large number of troops required. If you had maybe 2 layers of forts with the neighbouring countries, you may have had better success

They probably *did* hard-code the French AI to lose. Even in the actual war, France *SHOULD NOT HAVE LOST* but because they refused to adopt the radio (it being a British invention), their chain of command was in absolute shambles. Soldiers retreated when they should have advanced, advanced when they should have regrouped, thought they were losing when they were winning, and so on. Basically, WWII IRL was lost because of the French AI.

It's often overlooked that a large contributing factor to the Maginot Line's failure was Germany getting incredibly lucky when they took the huge risk of advancing through the Black Forest to bypass it (not having the best track record with considering big risks in general; if I'm remembering my military history correctly they tried again at the Battle of the Bulge and it didn't work nearly as well).

The problem with the French ai is that it always tries to garrison its colonies, thus pulling troops out of France. The simplest way to make France good in hoi4 is to give there colonies independence.

It kinda makes sense for France to lose, even if fully fortified. The defense of the forts requires soldiers, if those soldiers are defeated than there is no one left to defend the forts behind the frontline, so taking them is a walk in the park.
