In the 19th century Egypt had a huge empire made up of what's now eastern Libya, North and South Sudan and Eritrea (or part of Somalia, I forget.). Mohammad Ali was all set to conquer the Ottoman Empire but the French and British ganged up on him because they did not want an energetic Ottoman sultan. They wanted to keep that empire lazy and inefficient.
