In today's alternate history scenario we ask what if the Tokugawa never came to power and persecuted Christianity? How might this alternate Japan's trajectory be changed? What conflicts may occur in this timeline? How could this change Japan in the 19th and 20th centuries?

I recall from another alt history youtuber (AHH, I think) who said that eventually, being Christian would not be enough for Japan to be seen as civilized. Now for the funnier flair of this comment, some historically literate friends of mine were joking about how Japanese Christianity would probably assimilate many Shinto practices into it, kind of like what happened with the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom in China. And thus, Saint Goku of Nagasaki was born.
@JP-rf8rr
@JP-rf8rr 3 ай бұрын
The Taiping is sort of an odd case because they were in reality a religion not based on any christian texts or historically connected churches, but a religion based on one individual who had rudimentary familiarity with Christianity. It's not surprising for such a religion to have many non christian elements since it's foundation was mostly non christian. A better example would be to look at Latin American Catholicism, or early Irish Christianity which while heavily influenced by native cultures, was built around christian texts and traditions.

Suggestion Mr Z: Have a fixed key chart in say, the upper right corner of the screen. This chart would have the names of clans/players, their alliances, in addition to the player, place names & clan icons that you periodically put on the screen. I'm just not (I'm sure there's other in your audience too) as familiar with Japanese names as you & others may be - for example, in my area we have a big Punjabi community & so the names are more familiar to me. Just a thought!

I feel like the greater answer isn't Tokugawa, but rather the leader of the Shimazu having a Charlemagne moment that causes his conversion and leads to the Ottomo and Shimazu striking an alliance to christainize Kyushu and use Christianity to spread across the islands. Thus if anything they'd want to foment the Ikko Ikki revolt to throw the main island into chaos, then with the Tokugawa looking weak they start to expand into the Mori part of the main island under the guise of returning stability, all the while helping missionaries spread to Shikoku and the Chosukabe, so they either convert and gain another clan ally or the Shimazu and Ottomo have the christains revolt giving them a pretense to invade to "restore stability". With this Christianity has a strong foothold where they can tell the shogun to bugger off, and take advantage of the other clans who want to shut themselves off from the influence of Europe to militarily and economically surpass the rest of Japan, making a hostile take over of the Shogunate and influence over the Emperor easy, especially if they get the Date behind their coalition. Also the likelihood a Christianized Japan goes isolationist seems slim to none. Plus I wouldn't put it past that Japanese Christianity wouldn't do the same thing as the Europeans did to pagan religions and start assimilating aspects of Shinto Buddhism into their branch of Christianity. Where this goes from here is hard to say since it rather depends on how this all changes the Papacy whether or not they end up another full schism like Orthodox or the Pope likes some of there things and decides their okay leading to some reverse osmosis of some things back to Europe that makes Japanese Christianity just a highly localized branch of Roman Catholicism.

I could see the Japanese Christian population in this alternate timeline being about 10 to 20 percent of the Japanese population with two competing sects that differ based on class. For many daimyo or Japanese nobility they would chose the Shinto Christian sect that would believe in reverence for the emperor ordained by God, the sun goddess Amatersau being the holy ghost of the trinity, God creating the creators of Japan, and a heavy focus on the reverence of kami that dictates proper traditions or behaviors of conduct in relation to repentance of past sins with heaven and hell being permanent. Most Japanese christians in this alternate timeline would prefer the Buddhist christian sect that seeks reincarnation from past sins as a way to retry one's capabilities to get into heaven after ones soul is either tortured in hell for a period of time before reincarnation as a human or is in purgatory for a period of time before reincarnation, using the sacrament as a guideline for ones ability to repent, heaven remaining permanent with the goal to reach spiritual enlightenment once getting there, and hell being used as a test to avoid bad karma on the process of healing ones soul from sin in the future.
@anvos658

Well yes that is a high possibility that Japanese Christianity just redefines the previous gods as aspects of God and potentially turns the Kami into manifestations of angels and/or demons.

I don't think the above assumption holds true. Even if the Tokugawa family had not seized power. All religious forces that resisted the samurai's rule were suppressed. Christianity was temporarily favored because of trade. In order to continue trade with Spain and Portugal, Christian missionary work had to be protected. Saltpeter, lead, and silk. At the time, hundreds of thousands of matchlock guns were produced domestically in Japan, but there was an overwhelming shortage of gunpowder and bullets. Lead was also essential for refining gold. It was a historical inevitability that Christianity was expelled when the era of samurai warfare that had continued for 100 years came to an end, the winners were decided, and there was no longer a demand for matchlock guns. The decisive factor was the rise of the Netherlands as a trading partner and the change of dynasty in China. The suppression of religion by the Sengoku samurai still has an impact on Japanese society today. In Japan, donations to religious organizations are not tax deductible. The proportion of Christians in Japan is on the decline. On the other hand, the proportion of Muslims is rapidly increasing. This may be due to the increase in labor immigration from Islamic countries. Japan has traditionally had friendly relations with Islamic countries such as Turkey and Iran.

Small correction: the prior ruler of Japan was the Taiko (retired Imperial Regent) and prior to that the Kampaku (Imperial Regent) and Daijō-daijin (Chancellor of the Realm). The character in question is an analogue of Toyotomi Hideyoshi who was originally of common birth and thus unable to take the title of Shōgun, though some historical accounts indicate he might have also refused to adopt the title given the opportunity.

That's a great idea, and I would like to see that happening. The Trastamaras would been the dynasty Spain needed over the Habsburgs because the Habsburgs only dragged Spain into European Wars and used Spain's total treasury to have funds for the War in Germany. But with the Trastamaras, they focus on Spain and focuses on their empire without dragging themselves into European Wars like in our own timeline.

In this Scenario how do you think the arrival of the Russians from the North and Orthodox missionary work led by St Nikolas of Japan would influence Japan and Japanese Christianity?
@DeanMonsieur
@DeanMonsieur 3 ай бұрын
It’s possible we would see the region of Hokkaido adopt a significant minority of Orthodox Japanese Christians. Hokkaido, historically, has harbored some resentment towards the rest of Japan for the suppression and occasional violence against the Ainu (native Hokkaidoans-it is like the dichotomy of the Taiwanese and Native Formosans). So it would not be out of the question for Orthodoxy to be adopted as a response to Catholicism/Kirishitan in the rest of Japan, though I doubt it would become a dominant religion. I see it becoming a similar situation to the spread of Orthodoxy in Alaska and how it was adopted by Native Inuits and Americans in small but significant numbers.
@matejaobrenovic3338
@matejaobrenovic3338 3 ай бұрын
@@DeanMonsieur I guess you also have the relation between the Ainu people and the Northern Ainu in Russian Sakhalin who are Orthodox. In our lives the earliest convert to Orthodoxy in Japan was a Samurai sent to kill St Nikolai, becoming the first priest. With the church becoming autonomous and more culturally Japanese due to the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese war. Interesting you bring up the Native Alaskans as that came not from conquest or subversion but from Orthodox missionaries or clergy marrying into native tribes who would intern convert or had converted. You can see even today in native villages across Alaska the churches being no different to some in Siberia.

Speaking of Oda Nobunaga, what do you think of the video on "What if Oda Nobunaga hadn't been killed but become the Shogoun of a united Japan"? What if the Nobunaga Shogunate had led Japan to victory during the Imjin War? Could Japan have the luxury of toppling the Ming Dynasty and have the Emperor of Japan claim the Heavenly Mandate, and if so, what would be the consequences of it? And what do you think of an Anglo-HRE between the Royal House of Tudor and the Habsburg Dynasty with the exile and death of Catherine of Aragon, based on the rumor she was poisoned by Herny VIII? If you don't know, Catherine is the aunt of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and sister of Jonna the Mad Castile, who happens to be Charles V's mother. Could the HRE go to war against the Kingdom of England if the rumors had been true? If so, who would win, and what would the consequences be? Who would be the victor, and what would change? Japan, being a Christian East Asian country, sounds very interesting. Still, it does pay a wave for the earlier rise of this Empire of Japan in the 1500s instead of the 1800s, with the Yoezi Restoration instead of the Meji Era. What mention the Yoezi Restoration would been different than the Meji Era because the Meiji Era was when Japan had industrial and became an equal power to the Europeans' point of view when they defeated the Russians in the Russo-Japanese War with Japan being the victor of the war. The Yoezi Era would be about Emperor Go-Yozei consolidating his power as Emperor of Japan. Still, it would have been a different luxury to have this Empire of Japan faster due to Japan's lack of industrialization and communication; some technologies, like telegrams and railroads, make communication much more manageable for this Empire of Japan to be more operative. What would this Empire of Japan be different from in this alternative timeline? Japan wouldn't have joined the Axis because they wouldn't have gone on the offensive to counterstrike against the Americas since this Japan is run by extremist military officials and nationalists and might have brought some East Asian countries more of a united and economic union instead of conquest by conversion of these into Christinay to follow the same tactics of what European powers like the Dutch and British did. I don't know if Japan might have followed the same ways how the Europeans colonized Asia, but they might done differently without being aggressive, like the militaristic Empire of Japan we know from 1896 to 1945. But this is a fantastic video, Mr. US of Z. I like how you made this video with time and effort, focused on the actual history, and made creative alternative history, which is what alternate history is about creating a history that was supposed to happen in our current timeline. I heard of a famous show called Shogoun, and it is great to be inspired to create this fantastic content, which is a great way to research. Some clarifications, the Emperor's authority at this time was pretty much non-existent and the reason why Hideyoshi never claimed the title of Shogun was because he was the son of a peasant, not because he wanted to support the emperor. Instead, he chose the titles of Taiko and Kampaku in order to legitimize his regime. Hideyoshi was actually desperate to have a noble son in order to attain the title of Shogun for the Toyotomi clan.

The idea of Japan becoming like the Philippines is basically implausible. The Philippines didn't exist as a country until the Spanish colonized all of the Philippine islands. Japan was a united country and culture post-sengoku jidai and an incredibly powerful one. At the height of the sengoku jidai there were more men at arms in Japan then there were in all of Europe and they were well equipped, trained and experienced by European standards. I imagine that even after the invasion of Korea Japan would've been impossible to invade and colonize by any European power. Japanese culture was never in danger of being destroyed by the Europeans, at least not directly

At the time of the Sengoku Jidai Japans population was at least 12 million (It used to be thought that it was 12 million but apparently that number is thought to be a significant underestimate now) which is probably a larger population than most European countries at the time. Take into account that in Europe at this time battles were often fought between small armies whilst the Sengoku jidai involved increasingly large armies and well over 100 separate clans raising armies to fight each other and it makes sense that Japan would've had an insanely high number of men at arms vs a significantly less militarized Europe at the time

There is so much wrong historically and even narratively with this video that I am actually appalled. 1. It is pronounced SekiGAhara not SekiJAhara. This is a consistent theme throughout the video as he keeps calling the Emperor Go-JOZEI, not YOZEI. Whoever is speaking does not understand Japanese at all. But somehow that is not even the worst part of this video. 2. Speaking of Sekigahara, while it is true that it had rained the previous day and that there was mist, the battle itself took place under clear weather conditions. 3. The primary focus of this video seems to be on Otomo Sorin, hooking up with Oda Nobunaga. Now I realize that this is alternate history, but what motivation does either have to meet with the other at this supposed divergence point? Nobunaga, in 1578, does not need an outsider's help unless it is to become a vassal. He already has Toyotomi Hideyoshi on the Chugoku front anyway to deal with the Mori. In this scenario therefore, Otomo Sorin would have to meet with Hideyoshi, which Sorin has no motivation to do since Sorin himself is a lord and therefore no motivation to pay homage to another feudal lord, especially one which he is not directly supporting for any reason. Even then how does Otomo Sorin reach Nobunaga in the first place, if we ignore what this would do to his prestige? Are the Mori just going to let him pass through their territory, the Mori clan which he is enemies at best with? 4. Oda Nobunaga was not resting at Honnoji in preparation for a campaign against the Takeda. He had already finished them off at the Battle of Tenmokuza. He was preparing for a campaign against the Mori. However, this scenario supposes the Otomo have somehow made them not a threat to Oda's power. So how then does the Incident at Honnouji happen? The entire scenario breaks because of the existence of the Mori clan. 5. Tokugawa Ieyasu did not see himself as the immediate successor to Nobunaga since he was never a vassal. He was an ally and in theory an independent entity from Nobunaga. It therefore makes no sense for him to feel like he has to succeed Nobunaga. Moving forward, actually, the man commonly seen as Nobunaga's successor would have been Shibata Katsuie, who was Nobunaga's righthand man, especially considering that Nobunaga's heir, Nobutada, had lost his life during the Honnoji Incident. He has no reason to be caught up in the power struggle with the other Oda lords as he has his own lands to secure - which is why he famously fled back to Mikawa after the Honnoji incident. Actually, him and Hideyoshi fought a brief war after Hideyoshi came out triumphant over Katsuie in the subsequent succession struggle. There was no alliance so much as a mediated ceasefire. 6. Why would the Emperor meet with a minor lord like Otomo Sorin? The video presupposes that Hideyoshi has already been made Kampaku shortly after Nobunaga's death, which didn't happen until 1585 - bear in mind that Hideyoshi and Ieyasu only declared peace with each other in 1584. Anyway, since Hideyoshi is the Kampaku, it is HE who meets directly with the Emperor. Otomo Sorin, despite whatever court ranks he might possess, would still be lower than the Kampaku and therefore not have the necessary qualification for meeting with the emperor for little more than brief moments if at all. Otomo Sorin meeting with the emperor for frequent or long periods is an EGREGIOUS breach of court etiquette - and therefore completely impossible. 7. What the fuck is an honor penalty????? Does he think this is Shogun 2 Total War? 8. What conspiracies is he referring to here? Maeda Toshinaga was an ally of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Is he referring to his brother, Toshimasa? Even then, Ieyasu showed leniency toward Toshimasa and other assassins, which earned Tokugawa Ieyasu respect among his peers. The reason why Toyotomi loyalists like Kato Kiyomasa (who by the way was related to Hideyoshi as both of their mothers were cousins) defected from to the Tokugawa was because they HATED Ishida Mitsunari, who was himself incredibly loyal to the Toyotomi, NOT the Emperor. It was entirely due to Ishida Mitsunari's poor attitude that so many people, including Hideyoshi's wife, defected to the Tokugawa. The Emperor isn't even really relevant to this era as while he did have some influence, there is no way he would have such military influence as this video implies he was - not without YEARS of clear build-up. 9. Why would there be a Go-Yozei Restoration? Especially under the Christians? The Emperor's power is derived from the authority of the Shinto Gods - which is directly in contention with Christian theology. Even then, if the Toyotomi have won the battle of Sekigahara, then it is THEY, NOT THE EMPEROR, who would be in power. As young as Hideyori was at this point in time, there is still no reason for Japan to fall back into chaos NOR is there any reason for the Emperor to be brought back to power. This video assumes a coup by the Imperial Court over the military infrastructure of all of Japan to be brought back to power - which is incredibly unlikely! 10. This video can't seem to make up its mind whether it's the Japan of Otomo Sorin or the Japan of Emperor Go-Yozei. Let us assume that it the Emperor's idea to invade Korea - why? Why would Go-Yozei possibly want to do this when his empire he is christianizing is unstable due to religious disorder? Moreover, why does he need to? He is already an Emperor - A Christian Emperor! Taking the Mandate of Heaven from China does not apply to that since he is Christian. Is he launching a Crusade? Sure. But why? But then we go back to Otomo Sorin being an incredible genius who can succeed where Hideyoshi and other Japanese generals failed. So then why isn't it his idea to invade Korea? Is the Emperor stupid? Is Sorin stupid? This video is so lazy and poorly researched that is actually makes my head hurt. He is mixing up tropes from the Japanese Empire of the 20th Century with his poor understanding of the Sengoku Era to the extent that it is making me ill. This video is just bad. It isn't even a realistic alternate history. It's just bad.

One idea I like is that Japan would not really adopt Western culture along with Christianity, but would simply translate its current religious practices into Catholic life. Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples whose clergy convert willingly could just as easily convert and repurpose their religious structures to Christian use. They can even wear the same vestments and musical instruments. It would just to the sacrifice of the Eucharist offered to God instead of a different sacrifice offered to a nature kami. And learning this, if they must invade Korea, they could see the native Korean culture and nourish it with Catholicism, so that even if they are colonized, the Koreans can enjoy a flourishing of their own identity.

The last battle for the unification of Japan in this timeline reminds me of the Battle of Tolbiac, where the Frankish king Clovis converted to Christianity after his miraculous victory against the Alamanni. In this scenario, the Date daimyo might have seen this as a sign that the Western God was on their side, possibly convincing him to convert to Christianity.
