Although Chuck really didn't get himself injured that much, and even if he had there are few martial artists with his level of resources (most of us are relatively poor all things considered, especially since we know injury usually isn't a matter of if but rather when and how bad so what we do usually have set aside usually comes and goes with the tide... this is even more true if you want to stay capable as you age since it means spending more when you are young and don't have much to spend). Chuck Norris had a lot of support when he was younger to get him where he is today... In fact, if you were to ask me what I felt like Chucks true legacy is I would say it is that we need to work together to help lift one another up as well as ourselves because without the help of others we don't get far in society and without society success really wouldn't matter as much. Think about a lot of his movies, in almost ever single one he is trying to help someone... I think for Chuck that's there for more than just values standards, he really believes in that (and so should we). :)

@@fletchkeilman2205 Now being in great shape is another issue, assuming you maintain that goal (it takes a ton of discipline and commitment though). The hardest part about learning new things as you get older is whether you can still afford to get it wrong (cause you're gonna, even if you spent your whole life doing them a master can still screw up, the milage can still creep up, and they're not called depreciable skills without reason). The other thing is figuring out what you really want, because there are many crossroads in life and only so much time and energy... the more that time and energy are wasted the less you will get done and the more you try to live life both ways the more likely you are to fall short of both. Or in the words of E-40 "Everybody got choices."... and isn't life just a wonderful hodge podge of those. :)

I think the fact that a 53 year old Chuck Norris would have a shot at winning UFC 1 is an amazing statement to how good a martial artist is, I love how he was willing to train in BJJ, and widen his skillset way before it was cool to train in more than one thing.
@AveSicarius2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that he would have realistically had a chance per se, but he likely wouldn't have been beaten up instantly like many of the striker's there were. Honestly as a striker it's pretty essential to learn some form of wrestling analogue, be it Judo, Sambo, or Catch Wrestling, because you need that takedown defense to ensure you can remain in control of the fight. If we look at traditional striking styles, like Traditional Karate or Traditional Boxing, they included heavy standup grappling elements, and usually they seem aimed towards defending against takedowns and then striking around the clinch. Chuck and Bruce were pretty early examples of people who were willing to cross-train and go outside of the comfort zone traditionally exhibited by martial artists at the time (where they refused to train any other style due to believing their's was superior, ironic given most of them were bastardized versions of far more generalized traditional styles), and while they might not have been the greatest fighters, just learning how to grapple as well as strike massively opens up your options in any combat scenario. A martial artist should be constantly looking to hone their edge, picking up new (effective) methods, and trying to incorporate those into what you already know. This is the very core of modern MMA as well as all the effective styles throughout history!
@charaznable92092 жыл бұрын
@@AveSicarius You guys think they allowed good strikers into UFC and MMA? lol look what happens when those guys try to fight even amateur boxers.
@AveSicarius2 жыл бұрын
@@charaznable9209 MMA striking and pure Boxing are totally different sports dude, Boxing a la Sport's Boxing quite literally does not work in MMA, and you would be beaten soundly by trying it because the dynamic is so different. If you don't understand that, you understand neither sport. Just the fact that MMA allows kicks radically changes the dynamic, let alone grappling which fundamentally prevents you from striking unless you know how to defend against it. It's like throwing a Boxer into a Muay Thai match and saying "yeah, Boxer's aren't good striker's because they can't compete in Muay Thai", no shit, because the athlete's are training for totally different rulesets, you could take the best Muay Thai fighter in the world, who is assuredly a better striker than the best Boxer simply due to having more tools, and they'd still lose in a Boxing match. We've also only seen MMA wrestlers fight in Boxing match's aside from Conor, who actually did pretty well against the guy who is known for being perhaps the best sports boxer out there. There are plenty of great strikers in MMA, but they practice MMA striking, not pure striking, all the tools at your disposal radically change what isn't and isn't viable, and you don't have big pillows to hide behind like in Boxing while needing to defend from takedowns, so MMA fighters learn to keep a much lower guard, which is a huge detriment when they switch over to Boxing. It's much like GSP was one of the best MMA wrestler's, he wasn't as good in pure Wrestling as many of the guys he beat, but he could absolutely destroy them in MMA. What insightful nugget are you going to come out with next? "MMA doesn't allow good grappler's in, they all get beat by NCAA 1 wrestlers in pure Wrestling".

remember, Chuck was kind of a late-bloomer in his Hollywood career - he didnt have a lead role in a major film until 1977-78 (Good Guys Wear Black was his first top billing; he was 37). He was already in his mid 40s when he had his string of 1980s hits (Missing in Action, Delta Force, etc). what if a 34-year old Chuck (early-1970s era) fought in UFC 1 ??
@jc-kj8yc2 жыл бұрын
You're spot on, his age would have been a problem. Tbf UFC 1 didn't have the youngest roster. Some of the guys looked like they might have been in their late 30s and maybe even early 40s. But another issue might have been Chuck being well rounded. For example he might have been content getting into a kickboxing match with Gerard Gordeau or Art Jimmerson, who both could have messed him up pretty severely. Curiously the only fight he probably would have won, even being over 50 is Royce, because Chuck's grappling was good enough to defend and keep it on the feet. Putting Chuck Norris in there would probably have ended with Ken Shamrock or Gerard Gordeau winning UFC 1.
@bryanfong10232 жыл бұрын
Early ufc was a freak show, no serious althletes participated besides the gracies.
@jc-kj8yc2 жыл бұрын
@@bryanfong1023 it depends who you define as an athlete. Usually athlete describes someone who makes their living by competing in a sport. That would be 100% of the early UFC's roster since they all got paid. Another definition for athlete is someone who's capable in all physical aspects required for high physical performance (Meaning strength, speed and flexibility) and proficient in a certain discipline. By that definition the only Gracie to hit that definition would be Rickson and he never competed in the UFC. But there were some people fitting that definition. Frank and Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, Don Frye, Randy Couture, Kevin Randleman, Vitor Belfort, etc. were strong, fast and proficient in at least one discipline (usually wrestling), so they'd count as athletes (juiced to the ears, but still athletes).
@rustyshackleford7352 жыл бұрын
I don't think chuck would just take a beating rather than shooting in due to being well rounded. He is well rounded specifically because he understands the importance of being good everywhere for a variety of reasons. He was also a top level karate fighter partly because he could adapt, assess his strengths and weaknesses and make adjustments in real time. Age and weight would've been the main factors working against him.
@AveSicarius2 жыл бұрын
If he was matched up against Dan Severn, that would be the match right there. Dan was arguably the favourite to win the tournament besides Royce, and was the worst possible matchup for Royce at the time (because he wasn't a great wrestler and so gaining any sort of control would be extremely difficult), the fight went on for 15 minutes of brutal wrestling hell before Royce managed to catch him (or Dan gave up depending on what you believe), and we just didn't see that anywhere else in the tournament. Chuck would have been instantly taken to the floor, and mauled, though Ken would have beaten him up instead of just throwing him around so that would probably have bene worse. So I'm surprised everyone forgets about Dan, because he was a really great wrestler and the only one who gave Royce a serious fight, and arguably would have won with a little submission experience (he also talks about pressure from the organization not to win which could also have been a factor).
@AveSicarius2 жыл бұрын
@@bryanfong1023 Dan Severn was a national level wrestler who almost beat Royce, Ken was an international competitor in various proto-MMA. It's not like there were no serious athletes, it was just an intentional decision not to invite them and they didn't know who Dan or Ken were really. There were serious athletes in the early UFCs, arguably Dan was significantly more athletic than Royce, but it was rare to see because the entire point was to show off the Gracie style of BJJ (because there are multiple styles of BJJ), and not to show off other martial arts. They only let Dan in because they didn't know he was a high level wrestler, and it was almost a HUGE mistake (Dan even talks about there being significant pressure on him to lose by the organization itself, and not knowing what would happen if he did win).

And on top of that, he was an athletic beast, if you put a majority of BJJ guys of the same weight in an MMA cage with him, someone that physically fit would usually win by default, because BJJ guys of that weight are usually bones, unless Bruce has a Derrick Lewis tank. Not fair to put him with Seagal and Dux, Bruce Lee was a lot more than that, and it's not even warranted, the dick suckery of Bruce Lee was not his own doing, it's just kids wanting their hero to be more than a man.

I think he would have done very well with his current history of training, but he likely would have been in the top of his weight class as he would have altered his training (in not only styles, but muscle development and stamina).

There were no weight classes in UFC 1, and Chuck would have been the smallest guy in the bracket.

He apparently started training BJJ in '85 so 8 years of training by then and apparently got his 3rd degree black belt in 2015. I don't know what rank he was in '93.

Here is a lesser know fact: Some time ago in my country, they built a new bridge and thought that it was good idea to decide the name for it by voting on internet, where anybody could suggest a name. Naturally, someone suggested "The bridge of Chuck Norris". And it won. Sadly, people in charge quickly decided that this particular way of finding the name was not such a good idea afterall, and went with something else.

They should really be making the same Chuck Norris jokes about George Foreman because that guy actually did become a world heavyweight champion at 45.

Hope your doing well in shanghai coach. I know a few people right now who have not been able to get food for 5 days.

The west side of Shanghai (where I live) is on a five day lockdown (first time in over 2 years). It wasn’t a surprise. Everyone in the city got two weeks of notice if they payed attention at all. But yeah, most folks here didn’t grow up in a food storage survivalist culture like I did. But if they’re going hungry now, how the heck did they survive the 3 and half month lockdown from January to April of 2020?

@@RamseyDewey Well glad to hear you are prepared then. I tell other people to get long lasting food and it falls in deaf ears. It's not difficult to keep at least a large bag of rice in the cupboard.

There were other Judo guys in the early UFC, and none of them ever won. Norris was a well rounded martial artist, but he probably wasn't good enough at BJJ to replicate what Royce Gracie did. Having said that, I like your analysis - his age would have been a problem, but his skill set would have made for some interesting matches.

@@RayRay-ir3yh Yeah, good example. He fought Remco Pardoel (who was one of the early Judo guys) and lost. Remco almost won UFC 2, but lost to Royce Gracie.

Hi coach! What do you personally think as a former professional fighter, and I use former for a reason that is as you’ve said one time something along the lines “you are not the same person/fighter as you were 5-10 years ago. So what is your take on fighters playing it more dramatic to injuries, best examples being exhaustion, fractured/broken shin, ribcage. The injuries and or exhaustion in question are real but the fighters could remain composed but played it harder just so they can justify their injury where their head gave up mostly.
