This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately, especially with Red Bull actually having a shot at the championship this year. So, I made a video on it. You're... welcome?

Imagine the scenes right now if Daniel was still an RB driver. He could easily have made the current two-way tie between Max and Lewis a three-way tie! It's unfortunately been what could've been so far, for Daniel, and as someone who likes the guy, it hurts. Really hope MCL deliver next year, cause he deserves a lot! Awesome vid mate!

personally, i’ve never blamed daniel for leaving rb. it had been 5 seasons since they won their last championship and they made zero progress closing the gap to mercedes in that time. let’s not forget, the only reason red bull are competing with mercedes this year is due to a rule change regarding the rear floor aerodynamics that was intentional in hurting mercedes and benefitting red bull. on top of that, the reliability was an absolute joke. but baku was the real cherry on top. the team blamed him for an incident that was clearly max’s fault. i would want out too. yeah it’s painful thinking “what if” now, but at the time he made the decision, it was the right one. on the bright side mclaren are getting stronger and stronger every year and i genuinely believe they will make it back to the top

100% spot on. I would’ve left as well. You could tell from 2017-2018 Res Bull started favouring Max despite Danny Ric still getting no quality results. Yeah, Daniel is my favourite driver but I was skeptical when he left Red Bull for Renault. "I'm leaving Red Bull because their Renault engines blew up 8 times during my season," "Where are you going to then?" "The Renault Works Team!" Yeah, honestly, Daniel does deserve a World Title. He beat a prime Sebastian Vettel in 2014 by some margin, and outscored Max Verstappen in 2016 and 2017, and beat a well established driver like Hulkenburg in his first season at Renault and absolutely demolished Esteban Ocon in 2020. Daniel is capable of at least matching Lando, but remember, age isn't on Daniel's side and Lando can only improve from here. Daniel is probably in or quickly approaching his prime. Next year he'll make a bold but good statement. I know it. Enchante, John.

Everyone seems to forget this: Daniel said in one of his initial interviews (I'm paraphrasing) - "I'm leaving for Renault because the [now 2022] rules package will favor constructor teams over customer teams." The plan was to build a constructor team around him and gamble that Renault was going to get the formula right before anyone else did (much like Merc did with the current rules package) and he would be in the catbird seat to win the title. Personally, I thought it was a pretty solid plan and was happy he made the move. Not only did us fans seem to forget he said this, but he apparently also forgot... by moving to another customer team (McLaren) before the rules package took place. I still feel like his move to McLaren was a short-term gain and a long-term loss - but who knows: maybe McLaren will somehow oust their constructor team in the next era much like Red Bull did to Renault in the past. I guess we'll have to wait and see....

Honestly I think this should really be titled, "What if Red Bull Treated Daniel Better?" After the Monaco 2016 disaster you would think they would do all they could to repay him. Rather than feel Monaco 2018 was an adequate apology and they'd then continue focussing on Max. Then you've got Baku where Daniel realised the team would never have his back again. The RB 2nd driver issue has all been because Horner and Marko can't understand refusing to support both drivers hurts the entire team's performance.

I think McLaren really needed the reality check that having Daniel struggle with the car all year has given them. They relied too much on blaming Honda for those few years and lost their way everywhere else as a result … I think copygate was still a negative influence as they took on the Honda engines as well. I’d love to see many more 1-2 finishes for McLaren and both Danny & Lando on the podium in 2022.

Propositions for next what if: What if Kubica hadn't his accident in 2011? (Remember, he had contract with Ferrari then for 2012) What if Hamilton hadn't go to Mercedes? What if Senna survived in Imola? What if Schumacher leaved Ferrari before 2000 or never joined them.

I’m going to open by saying that I’m a new fan and over-reliant on Drive to Survive for information about the 2018 season, but I still want to weigh in. First, I think Red Bull let Daniel get away, he could see that Max was gonna be the number one driver and some of Horner’s comments felt as if he took it for granted that Daniel would sign with them again. Second, even if Daniel would have stayed I think he would have been stifled at Red Bull and his production might have suffered, but also, when he and Max were both having competitive weekends they were not afraid to fight each other, which wouldn’t have been good for the team. For me the outcomes are either Daniel delays his exit from Red Bull, but still leaves because he wants to find a team that is going to let him push himself to the limit, or if he stays Red Bull look stronger as a team, but Daniel and Max keep each other from being as competitive and Mercedes would still be dominant. Again, I know that I’m a new fan, and this is just my opinion, but based on the personalities of Max, Daniel, and Christian, even if Daniel stayed for 2019 and 2020 I don’t think he would be there for 2021.

People highlight the preferential treatment for Max part more than it should be, Reliability was the major issues tbh.. Red Bull always gives this kinda preferential treatment to their new drivers to test them for future. They did the same with ricci and Seb, Seb got told to let ricci by multiple times in 2014 as ricci was on the better strategy. It's not just Max it's how RedBull does it imo

It would change nothing at all. He would have a few more race wns on his stats but nothing more. What I can say is that RB would probably be far ahead in CWC. As for DWC, I think him and Verstappen would be taking too many points off each other and Hamilton would swoop in for an easier DWC. It was a neutral move. McLaren may be fastest next year and he may have a shot at a DWC.He canthen try to use his experience to beat Lando to DWC.

Let's not forget what happened last time red bull had 2 drivers fighting for the championship. Horner and Marko have a history of not being great at settling disputes between drivers in the past, especially as Marko has a tendency to show bias towards his favourite driver of the time, whoever that may be.

That's pretty much it. Danny had the measure of Max when he was still starting out, but Max was still developing. They were near even in 2018, but Max had his number in qualifying by then, and he would have likely dominated qualifying in 2019 as well, just not to the same degree he did against Ricciardo's replacements. Danny knew he had a better chance of being a champion in a team where he was top dog. He's been doing an Alonso, searching for that team... but hopefully he'll meet more success in this team change than Alonso had at Ferrari.

I'm happy he left, as you said all he would have got out of staying are a couple more wins and probably giving RB a constructors' this year, as RB would definitely prioritize Max for the drivers'. Now lets hope McLaren gives that Honey Badger a championship winning car because I speak for a lot of people when I say, it doesn't matter whether you are a Mercedes, RB or McLaren fan, if DR can get that opportunity, we will all be rooting for him.

It´s sad to see this rn, when he doesn't have a seat for the next year. But tbh I also think that he hasn't delivered so I get why McLaren made that choice, but it still hurts. I know he is RB´s third driver so he has an opportunity. Daniel will be missed n the grill.

I tend d to agree with you. I was not happy with the idea of him leaving RB. However, I can understand his frustrations with 8 DNF's in 2018. Yes, he had great pace and I believe he would have been in the running for a WDC, but the car kept on letting him down, so I understand why he would look elsewhere. He never really said out loud why he chose top leave, but I'm betting it was everything to do with the shitty car that he had to nurse around the track. Let me know if I'm wrong, but if memory serves, I believe that he also took a new engine and grid penalty at one of the races and that unit blew up as well. What a bloody nightmare.

Danny boy had 1 good season in 2014 Vs a Seb who was leaving for his dream team Ferrari. He's team jumped himself into a journeyman driver at this point. In 10 years he's never been in the WC hunt, only picking up the odd lucky occasional win.I'll give him credit for having a great PR team though, few have done less and gotten more positive press.

Daniel beat Max in 2016 and 2017. Also would have beaten him comfortably in 2018 had they equal reliability. Daniel has improved markedly his weakness of his rbr days which were his starts. He's not one of the best starters on the grid. Fair to say Daniel and max would have taken too many points of each other and lewis would have won. McLaren is the perfect team for him and they will have the best windtunnel and sim in the sport soon. He's in the best spot he can be
@koekenzopie5919

If that would be true, why on earth did he leave if he was comfortably beating Max? Because he wasn't in 2018 despite the reliability issues. He should have stayed then as he would be the one battling Lewis now instead of Max. It would have been a very bad decision, which Renault actually also was. But I do hope McLaren will make it to be a good decision.

I mean this is all on hindsight though. Remember at the time Redbull was making a controversial move to switch to Honda, especially when Honda failed to secure a team after McLaren. Even then Renault was still a viable option for them. It could have gone either way, Redbull could be where Ferrari is right now. At the end of the day, moving was a much more guaranteed way of battling Merc. By moving he would be in a car that would either be powered by Ferrari or Merc, either of which is renowned for producing power and reliability.

I still feel it was the right decision for Danny Ric. He still wouldn't have won a championship as RB didn't have the car and after several years of being treated as a second driver he would be super frustrated. RB is a toxic working environment for any driver other than their golden boy at the time. RB and Max lost more from Danny leaving than he lost in my opinion.

Remember that last year with RB, there were too many negatives there, he had stopped smiling. He bad to go even though he was demoting himself, it was better for him as a person overall. Struggling at Mclaren and Renault because youre learning is one thing, but the troubles and the unfair treatment at RB were another level of annoying. I think verstappen is naturally good but I think what makes him good is his reckless/selfish racing, so I think as he has matured he has gotten slower in many ways, by not being quite as risky. Id love to see him and ricc competing again with a bit more respect towards ricc from verstappen and the team. Cos I think that flow Ricc has is the best on some tracks like you say. He has that elememt of #1 in certain ways, just as Id say Ham and Vers do. They are like rock/paper/scissors.

If he never left Red Bull, then on the one hand, RBR would be comfortably leading the Constructors' Championship. But on the other hand, Lewis would likely have a bigger lead in the Drivers' standings, as Max and Daniel would be taking points and wins off each other. There would also be an increasingly uneasy relationship with Max being favoured by the team in a title fight -- like with Webber in 2010.
